The Panthers received thesixth seed.Becker, a senior forward, finishedwith seven points and a team-besteight rebounds last Tuesday. However, she was at her best after Oronocaught GSL at 29 points apiece. On her team’s next two possessions, Becker tallied deuces in thepaint — the first strike being a put-back.That started a 10-2 GSL run, which also included a triple, a lowblock deuce and a free throw byOber, who finished with 13 points. The 6-1 dandy added 10 talliesagainst Litchfield, giving her 995 fora career which still has a senior yearcoming. The Dragons, who finished 10-6and tied with Dassel-Cokato for thirdin the WCC (behind co-champsGSL GirlsTurn to page 2B4 GSL/LP wrestlers won 30But no Panther gainsClass AA state meetBy Lee OstromSports Editoracob Jewett notched his 30thwin of the 2011-12 season atlast weekend’s Section 2(Class AA) individualwrestling tournament in Waconia. So did Michael Donnay. So did Dalton Clouse. Each is a GSL/Lester Prairiesophomore.Mitchell Hartwig, a junior, arrivedin Waconia with 34 wins. He nowhas 37.But he will not add to his total. Not this winter. Neither will any ofhis teammates.Despite the foursome’s 130 combined wins, no Panther advanced tothe Class AA state meet; that beingdetermined after GSL/LP suffered aparade of heartbreaking defeats lastSaturday. In all, five Panthers (add ninthgrader Nate Tesch to the foursome)advanced to Saturday morning’schampionship semifinals. There, only Hartwig and Clouseclaimed wins — the more dramaticbeing Clouse’s 5-4 decision overMax Bullock, a rugged Waconia foewho had pinned Clouse during a regular-season meeting. So, two Panthers to the finals. Butfrom GSL/LP head coach LanceWurm’s vantage point, it should havebeen three.Jewett, after controlling Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran 106pounder Jackson Sweeney for muchof their match, was taken down deepinto the third period and eventuallyJtipped — with eight seconds remaining. Sweeney won 5-3.Jewett fought back in the wrestlebacks, but never got a true-secondopportunity.The GSL/LP wrestler placed thirdat the tournament. His final seasonmark: 32-10.As the day developed Hartwig andClouse also would feel the agony ofnarrow defeat — in each case, notjust once, but twice.Hartwig, who qualified for andwrestled in the 2011 state tourney, had two shots at returning, but cameaway just short both times. In the championship match at 138pounds, he and Scott West’s secondseeded Andrew Fogarty wrestledthrough two scoreless periods, beforeFogarty scored a reversal. Hartwigquickly escaped, but tallied no more.Fogarty won, 2-1.Challenged for second place byMatt Lloyd of Montgomery-Lonsdale/LeCenter, Hartwig was ahead 30 in the third period, when Lloydstruck with a fireman’s carry.Hartwig was taken down to hisback, and then pinned – after 89 seconds of final-period action. At 182 pounds, Clouse looked likea champion wrestling MankatoWest’s top-seeded Tyler Jakes (38-1)in the finals. But his 1-0 shutout disappeared ina flash, when Jakes scored a reversalas time in the match expired. The 2-1 loss had to be devastating. But like with Hartwig, it got worse.Chronicle photos by Lee OstromMitchell HartwigJacob JewettMichael DonnayDalton ClouseJunior138 poundsRecord: 37-5Sophomore106 poundsRecord: 32-10Sophomore113 poundsRecord: 31-11Sophomore182 poundsRecord: 30-9WrestlingTurn to page 3BGSL Hall to addDose, Reschand RuschmeyerThe GSL Panther Association hasannounced that the GSL Hall ofFame will grow by three on Oct. 6,2012, with the inductions of DaveDose, Mary Resch and Robyn(Ruschmeyer) Courchane. In addition, special recognitionwill be given to GSL’s undefeated2000 football state champions; theschool’s 1998 girls’ basketball team, which placed fourth in state; theradio broadcast team of Tim Halligan, Nate Gorr and Josh Monahan;and football’s veteran chain gangmembers Dale Pagel, Mike Wosmek,Louie Graupmann and Dave Witthus. The three new inductees, two recognized teams and seven special individuals will be saluted during halftime of the homecoming footballgame, Oct. 5, at Stevens SeminaryChronicle sports editor Lee Ostrom is atleeo@glencoenews.comLee OstromStadium. The GSL Hall of Fame banquetwill take place the following eveningat Glencoe City Center.
