READINGProverbs 1:1-7The Proverbs of Solomon Ben-David, ruler of Israel:For women and men to learn wisdom and self-discipline, and to understand wordsof enlightenment; to acquire the disciplines of being equitable—rightness, justice, and fairness; to instill competence in the uneducated, and knowledge and goodsense to the young; to help wise women and men increase their learning, and togive greater guidance to discerning hearts; and to open the meaning of proverbsand parables, the sayings of sages, and their riddles. When you stand in awe of YAHWEH that is when you begin to really understand. But to spurn SOPHIA and instruction is utter foolishness.MUSIC:Shadow and SubstanceWords & Music: Daniel Charles Damon

READING:The Founder of Mothers’ DayJulia Ward Howe’s Mothers’ Day Proclamation (1870)Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water ortears! Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall notcome to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearnall that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender ofthose of another to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."From the bosom of the devastated earth, a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!"The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicatepossession. As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that maybe left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live inpeace, each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesars but of God.In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limitof nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest periodconsistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement ofinternational questions, the great and general interests of peace.MUSICFaith of Our MothersTUNE: ST. CATHERINE – Henri F. HemyFaith of our mothers, living stillIn cradle song and bedtime prayer; In nursery lore and fireside love,Thy presence still pervades the air:Faith of our mothers, living faith! We will be true to you always.Faith of our mothers, loving faith,Fount of our childhood's trust and grace,Oh, may thy consecration proveSource of a finer, nobler race:Faith of our mothers, living faith,We will be true to you always.Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,For youthful longing, youthful doubt,How blurred our vision, blind our way,Your providential care without:Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,We will be true to you always.Faith of our mothers, daring faith,Is truth beyond our stumbling creeds,Making love known and freedom real,We breathe LOVE’s spirit through our deeds:Faith of our mothers, Loving faith! We will be true to you always.

GOSPEL:Proverbs 8:1-11Doesn’t SOPHIA call?Doesn’t UNDERSTANDING raise her voice? On the hills along the road, at the crossroads, she takes her stand; beside the city gates of thetown, in the gates themselves, she cries out,“Women and men, people of everywhere, I’m calling out to you!I cry to humankind! You who are simple, learn how to make sound judgments! To the foolish among you, use your common sense!Listen closely, for what I say is worth hearing, and I will tell you what is right; for my mouth willspeak the truth, and my lips hate to lie.Everything I say is right; none of it is twisted or crooked. All of it is plain-spoken to those who understand, clear to those seeking knowledge.Accept my lessons in place of silver, and knowledge in place of gold; for SOPHIA out-sparklesjewelry; anything you desire cannot compare to her.SERMON:REFUSE to be CONSOLED!SONG OF THE DAY:MOTHERING GODTEXT: Jean Janzen, based upon Julian of Norwich; MUSIC: Carolyn Jennings NORWICHMOTHERING GOD, you gave me birthin the bright morning of this world.CREATOR, source of ev’ry breath, you are my rain, my wind, my sun.MOTHERING CHRIST, you took my form, offering me your food of light, grain of life, and grape of love, your very body for my peace.MOTHERING SPIRIT, nut’ring ONE,in arms of patience hold me close,so that in faith I root and growuntil I flow’r, until I grow.

PRAYERS:On this Mothers’ Day let us remember the one our ancestors knew as SOPHIA the DIVINEWISDOM symbolized by the dove. Let us open ourselves to the POWER of the LOVE, which isthe EL SHADDAI the BREASTED ONE, to work resurrection in us, trusting even in our isolationthe power of LOVE will work in us, through us, with us, and beyond us to make the world whole.Jane Winstanley:MYSTERIOUS GOD, creator of all peoples, we have derided ancient civilizations who sacrificedtheir sons to gain your favour.Yet we continue this horror each time we send our sons and daughters to war.Open our eyes to our foolishness, open our hearts and minds to your wisdom, wisdom given bythe prophets throughout history, wisdom so often ignored.May competition be replaced by compassion, and conflict be resolved by negotiation.Kill in us the desire to dominate and control, renew in us the desire for peace and community. So that Your will is done and the Peace of Christ rests on all nations.Sharon Willan:“Rachel is weeping for her children”, words written to describe the unspeakable horror ofMothers witnessing the killing of their children.I felt anguish, numbness, a deep sense of loss as I watched television and saw the lines of reddresses hanging from trees. Each dress, an Indigenous daughter, mother, sister, friend, relativemissing or murdered. How does a Mother hold these wounds in her body as her heart breaks?Holy One, it is estimated there are over 1200 missing or murdered Indigenous women acrossCanada. I see great frustration as Indigenous Peoples wait for a substantial action plan forReconciliation, for a sustained effort in locating missing women, and for a growth in respectwhen women are reported missing. Too often, racism rears its ugly head, the requests for helpare ignored, not taken seriously. What can be done in the face of such intolerable suffering? What comfort can be offered?HOLY SOPHIA, WISDOM OF MYSTERY, thank you that Indigenous Women have drawncourage from you as artists, writers, lawyers, teachers, and others have shone light intodarkness by helping women help themselves and heal their communities. Red Dress Dayshines such a light as it helps raise awareness and offers education to all of us. May we learn torespect the colour red, a sacred colour revered in Indigenous spirituality.May we recognize the blessings these women give to each other and to us.HOLY WISDOM, may we see that only in standing together - in all our diversity - as one peoplecan we strengthen each other. May we hold out our arms to enfold this suffering and the lightthat illumines a path forward, offering what comfort we can.Marney Curran:We sorrow for the unwise advice and actions taken by some which has brought peril tothemselves and others. We sorrow for the lives lost, and those struggling to carry on in a high risk work environmentand a challenging home situation. And yet, we take comfort in encouraging signs of light at the end of this dark tunnel we are in.We take comfort that you are with us is our sorrow and anxiety, but also in our joy and peace.

Eric Schultz:In his spiritual fable “Faith, Hope and a bird called George” Michael Morwood has put into wordswhat I have often felt. In 4 questions I’ll briefly paraphrase my understanding of oneconversation between the main characters after learning of the death of a friend. Why do you think that “heaven” is up there or out there somewhere?Do you not believe that when you die you are with God?And, do you not also believe that God is here and everywhere? So, then is one who dies not still here?I’m grateful for the wisdom and spirit of my mother who continues with me. Although it has beenmany years, I still grieve her absence at important events in the life of my family. I pray forfamilies who have recently lost mothers and mothers who have lost families. May they in timecome to an understanding that SOPHIA/WISDOM changes but she never ceases to be.Andrew Slonetsky:In addition to all the grieving mothers I am feeling for all those who are experiencing the loss ofa mother today. Some were expected to pass. Many would be alive but for this pandemic. Themothering of our society it so important. Models of what a caring society looks like, we are stillundervaluing them. Mothers have been at the forefront of peace movements, environmentalmovements, justice movements May we all consider this sudden loss of mothers in the worldand do our best to fill the gaps they have left in our social fabric by checking in on grievingfamilies and offering help in an ongoing basis. organizations that depended on them.Resurrected by the LOVE in which we are ONE, we walk into the future nourished to practiceresurrection, so that all may know in us the peace which comes as pure gift from EL SHADDAIthe BREASTED-ONE, CHRIST our SOPHIA, and the RUACH the SPIRIT who breathes in us,through us, and beyond us, to heal our wounded world. Amen.

SONG:When We Seek LanguageWords: Carl P. Daw, Jr.; Music: Carl F. SchalkBLESSING:Let us open ourselves to the power of our sorrow and refuse to be comforted until thetears of the suffering millions are dried with the compassion of the MYSTERY of theONEwhich IS LOVE, living, working and LOVing in, with, through and beyond us to heal thesick, comfort the dying, and feed the poor, so that justice and not tears can begin to “rolldown like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Remember you areblessed by, Our LOVER, BELOVED, and LOVE Itself, now and always.
