Page 5Secrets to Making thePerfect AskFundraising for many can be daunting however, inorder for organizations to survive it is imperative thatwe get comfortable with “making the ask”. Below aresome practical yet easier ways to become better atasking.Prepare – this begins with understanding not onlyknowing what you are asking for, but moreimportantly why does it matter?Understanding why you support AAUW andknowing the impact and difference a gift couldmake for young girls and women offers soundreasoning for any prospective donor. Taketime to analyze who you are targeting.Considerations could include leveraging yournetworks; understanding their giving potential;level of interest; and likelihood that they wouldgive to AAUW. Lastly, make sure to practiceyour pitch!Make Your Ask – make the donor aware that theirinvestment will not only continue to advanceour cause, but will also provide for manyopportunities to empower the lives of womenand girls. Explore other alternatives such asasking them to consider membership; or toattend a local event or volunteer their time.Take time to have the conversation to get toknow their passions and how they make animpact as well. Listen carefully to theirresponses and what interests them. Thankthem for their engagement and support. An Ask is Not an Ask Without Follow-up –make sure to stay in touch with the individualregardless of the outcome. Oftentimes a “no”may mean “not right now”. Continue to involvethe donor in events and activities to show theimpact of AAUW’s work. Lastly, ensure torespond to any questions they may have in atimely manner.Thank you for all you do to support our organization.Your individual and collective efforts will help us ingrowing OUR Branch, the organization, and making apositive impact on girls and women around thecountry.Gloria Hailes, prospective FUND/VP candidateCheer of the WeekCase Update: Aileen Rizo’s Equal Pay VictoryArrives Just in Time for Equal Pay DayOn April 9, 2018, the U.S. Court of Appeals for theNinth Circuit reversed a decision from a smallerpanel last year in Rizo v. Fresno County Office ofEducation, holding that prior salary alone as a“factor other that sex” or in combination with otherfactors cannot justify a pay differential. This casematters because basing pay on salary history canperpetuate the gender pay gap due to women beingtypically paid less in prior jobs than men in directcontrast with the intent of the Equal Pay Act (EPA) of1963.This decision is a huge victory for employees withinthe jurisdiction of the Ninth Circuit. However, the fightfor protections for all workers continues. Federallegislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act, currentlypending in Congress, would ban the use of salaryhistory nationwide and provide much-neededupdates to strengthen the EPA.AAUW will continue to support Rizo through our legalcase support program as her case moves throughany further appeal.Busy Legislative Session BranchAdvocacy Opportunities! The California Legislature is gearing up for a busysession this spring and summer. With over 2000 billsintroduced, the AAUW CA Public Policy committeeand our advocate, Shannon Smith-Crowley narrowedour focus down to 31 pieces of legislation that fitAAUW’s mission. We try to focus on those areaswhere AAUW is an expert and often a lead- Title IX,Pay Equity and STEM. This year, there were severalproposals in response to the #MeToo campaign andsexual harassment which we will be watching. As the session unfolds, it might be helpful to havebranches meet with their local legislators to discusssupport of these bills. Shannon will determine whatand who and then we will contact the branch in thelegislator’s area. Advocacy efforts might includephone calls or emails, or an office visit. There aretools on AAUW’s website teaching how to have asuccessful visit and the Public Policy committee isavailable for coaching and ideas. We will also befollowing up on the ideas from the advocacy plenaryat the state convention and working to create adatabase of who we know in public office to help withour collective advocacy efforts.

It wasvery revealing and perhaps a sign of what is to comeamong US Corporate Leaders. Mr. Benioff wasconvinced there was no pay inequity between men &women at Salesforce because the company hasexplicit policies that say men and women should bepaid equally. However a 2016 audit revealed the paygap was “just everywhere. It was through the wholecompany, every division, every department, everygeography”, he said.Part of this pay discrepancy can be attributed to fastgrowing companies in the tech industry which buy andaggressively assimilate other smaller companies andtherefore inherit their existing payroll structure. Mr.Benioff said, “ We’re like, how can this be? But itturned out we had bought about two dozencompanies. And guess what? When you buy itstechnology, you don’t buy its culture, you also buy itspay practices.”Following the 2016 audit, Salesforce spent 3 millionin salary adjustments to close the pay gap. About sixpercent of the company’s employees received a raiseas a result. However, the fix seemed fleeting when a year later, aSalesforce audit identified an additional 11 percent ofemployees who were underpaid. The companythen spent another 3 million to rectify the situation.“Although many women in tech are still paidbetween five and 25 percent less than their malecounter-parts, most CEOs still refuse to recognizepay gaps exist at their own companies”, Mr. Benioffsaid.“I mean there is a lot of resistance. But this—there’snever been an easier time to make this change.CEOs with one button on one computer can payevery man and every woman equally. We have thedata. We know what everyone makes. There’s noexcuse. Everybody can easily do this now,” headded.Dues are DuePlease check your email from memberinfo to renewyour AAUW membership on-line.
