Company ProfileBusiness FocusOver the past five decades, BIOTRONIK has specialized in three business areas – cardiac rhythm management, vascular intervention, and electrophysiology – enabling the company to provide customers with a widerange of superior quality solutions for increasing therapy efficacy, streamlining clinical workflow, andimproving quality of life.Cardiac Rhythm ManagementBIOTRONIK Cardiac Rhythm Management offers diagnostic tools and options for treating arrhythmias.Modern implants not only save lives but also fulfil a broad range of functions, improving a patient’squality of life by monitoring the heart. Some of the most noteworthy innovations in this field includeBIOTRONIK Home Monitoring , the only FDA- and CE-approved remote monitoring system for the earlydetection of clinically relevant events, and ProMRI technology, allowing implant patients to undergo crucialMRI scans. In the field of cardiac rhythm management, we offer the following products: PacemakersDefibrillatorsLeads and cathetersExternal devices for processing implant dataWireless remote patient monitoringImplantable loop recorderVascular InterventionBIOTRONIK is one of the leading companies developing and manufacturing minimally invasive treatments forvascular diseases of the heart and peripheral arterial system. The company’s product portfolio includes stentsystems and balloon catheters with and without drug elution, plus guide wires and accessories for vascularintervention. One recent, notable invention is Orsiro, the industry’s first hybrid drug-eluting stent for treatingcoronary artery stenosis. In the field of vascular intervention, we offer the following products: Guide wiresBalloon cathetersStentsDiagnostic cathetersAccessory productsElectrophysiologyBIOTRONIK electrophysiology pioneered and validated an innovative ablation concept: GoldTip ablationcatheters have become the ’highest standard’ of therapy for physicians worldwide, their quality proven inmultiple studies and daily clinical practice. GoldTip catheters offer an optimal blend of function, control, and safety. They maintain a cooler tip temperature, facilitate fast and efficient lesion formation, reducecoagulation, and reduce catheter exchange rates during proceduresIn the field of electrophysiology, we offer the following products: Ablation cathetersDiagnostic cathetersExternal devices for stimulation and irrigation flowAccessories for trans-septal accessCatheters for temporary pacing

BIOTRONIK // Product Catalog // HistoryOur History1960s – Exploring OpportunitiesPhysicist Max Schaldach and electrical engineer Otto Franke founded BIOTRONIK in 1963, developing the firstGerman implantable pacemaker in Berlin. At first, the company focused primarily on overcoming basic technological hurdles, such as short battery service time and the uncertainty of remaining battery power, and on developing a reliable method for connecting the lead to both pacemaker and heart. In the following years, the Researchand Development (R&D) division produced a series of innovations that would come to be seen as milestones incardiovascular medical technology.1970s – Expanding the Playing FieldThe appointment of Dr. Schaldach as professor of biomedical engineering at Erlangen’s Friedrich-AlexanderUniversity boosted R&D work at BIOTRONIK. In 1976, we opened our first headquarters in Berlin-Neukölln, eventually settling at Woermannkehre 1, which we still call home today.Upon acquiring Stimulation Technology, Inc., we set up production facilities in Lake Oswego, Oregon, USA,and also began developing and producing advanced hybrid circuitry and modules for the biomedical industry. These advancements were a precursor to breakthrough technology in the cardiac health industry and still stand aspioneering achievements in the history of medical technology.1980s – New HorizonsThe development of physiological stimulation marked the beginning of a new phase in pacemaker therapy.Dual-chamber pacing technology was developed to better respond to the actual needs of the patient. These “DDD” pacemakers gave priority to spontaneous heart contractions, triggering a stimulus only whennecessary. BIOTRONIK became a European market leader with the release of the Diplos 03 pacemaker. Thanks toother technological and commercial successes in the 1980s, we were able to expand from Germany further intoEurope, South America, and Asia.

History1990s – Widening the Product RangeIn 1993, BIOTRONIK expanded its product range with implantable defibrillators. Our philosophy of designingproducts to imitate the natural workings of the body led us to another key achievement: Closed Loop Stimulation. This technology integrated the pacemaker into the body’s natural regulatory system, thus allowing it to react to thepatient’s changing physical and related mental activity in the most physiological way possible. Another innovation, the fractal coating of implantable leads, was also based on natural functions. This coating optimizes the lead’selectrically active surface, critically improving its electrical sensing and pacing properties. BIOTRONIK is still theforerunner in this field, and the only manufacturer of fractal coated leads. In 1995, we added vascular intervention devices to our product range, such as balloon catheters and stentsfor the treatment of coronary and peripheral vessels. We later began vascular intervention production inSwitzerland, which still remains one of our high-tech production centers today. Diagnostic and therapeuticcatheters as well as radio-frequency generators for ablation furthered the work started in the 1970s, rounding outa comprehensive product portfolio for cardiac electrotherapy2000s – Meeting the Challenges of the New MillenniumThe first implantation of a pacemaker with BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring signaled our leap into the 21st centurywith a service that provided physicians with current data from implants, regardless of their patients’ location. Thisinnovative technology combined optimal therapy with the most efficient care, increasing and protecting the patient’ssecurity. The ability to follow-up on patients at home after implantation not only enabled physicians to monitorpatients under less stressful conditions, but also allowed for early detection of clinically relevant events. Backed upby several successful and wide-ranging studies, BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring was and is the first and onlysystem of its kind to receive both CE and FDA approval for early detection of clinically relevant events and reductionof in-office follow-ups. It has also spurred our enhanced entry into the realm of heart failure therapy, supportingthe release of the first CRT implants with telemonitoring technology.2010 and Beyond – Continuing to Produce Life-SavingSolutionsProMRI became a crucial part of our technology portfolio, giving patients access to life-saving MRI scans thatwere previously unavailable to them. We now boast the broadest market portfolio of devices approved for MRI,including complete pacemaker and ICD series, implants for heart failure therapy, and leads. We are the world’s onlycompany offering ICDs and CRT devices that are safe for MR scans. In 2011, we added Orsiro, the industry’s first hybrid drug-eluting stent, to our vascular intervention portfolio.A leap forward in the treatment of coronary artery stenosis, Orsiro features a PROBIO coating that encapsulatesthe stent’s surface along with a bioabsorable BIOlute coating that delivers a limus drug. Positive results from earlyclinical studies saw Orsiro performing as best in class. In 2012, we added a completely new product category to our portfolio with the development of BioMonitor,a small implantable heart monitor using BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring for highly accurate arrhythmia detection. In addition, we affirmed our commitment to the Asia-Pacific region with the opening of a new office in Singapore. We also turned our efforts to philanthropic work through a charitable partnership with the Heartbeat InternationalFoundation (HBI), providing life-saving implantable devices to some of the world’s neediest patients in developingparts of the world. In only the first two years of cooperation, 1,000 lives were already saved.BIOTRONIK has always focused its efforts on improving patient safety and quality of life. In the years to come, wewill continue to fulfil our motto, “excellence for life.”
