This directory is intended as a resource for individuals,landowners, forestry workers, and county officials whowant to learn more about island wood products andthe local businesses that are utilizing our unique forestresources.The San Juan islands are seeing a renewed interest ingrowing, harvesting, and building with local trees. Thebusinesses in this directory offer a viable alternative tomainland wood products for all types of projects. Ourthin soils and scant rain mean slower growing treeswith tight clear grain, perfect for trim, flooring, andfurniture. Many local houses, barns, and sheds are cladin rough sawn local boards often from the land wherethe building sits. The architects and builders in thisdirectory have created buildings entirely from localtimber with beautiful results.Historically the islands had a booming timber industry as the forests were cleared for farm land and ourharbors made easy access to barge the logs to mill. Asthe resources were exhausted the economy shifted andit’s only in recent years that the forests have regrownsufficiently to offer high quality timber at economicallyviable scales. The growing number of businesses thatdeal in local wood are part of a larger ethic of foreststewardship that sees the island’s forests not only as aresource, but as a vital part of our overall communityhealth.
