As we enter into our 24th year ofserving economically disadvantaged kids and their families,we do so with the understanding and commitment that weneed to and will do more.The theme for our 2017 Annual Report of “Before andAfter” is fitting for several reasons. From the time ourscholars enter our program as freshmen to the time theygraduate as seniors, they develop from teens into youngmen and women. That transformation is the product notonly of time, but of opportunities seized and wisdomgained through successes and failures. The growth of HFSChicago Scholars over the past 24 years is not unlike thegrowth of our scholars in high school; this year, we add arecord fifty freshmen to our family.Our scholars’ hard work and growth bears fruit yearafter year. One hundred percent of our graduates enrollin a college or university. Over Ninety percent of ourscholars make the high school honor roll each year. Ourscholars in their senior year are no different.BRYANNA is thankful to have broken freeof the “box” she grew comfortable living in.NINA found her call of service and plans tovolunteer in Bolivia working with an NGO toopen health clinics for communities in need.KYRIE is happy that all his hard work paid offwhen all the college acceptance letters came inand was happier still to know that his mom wasso proud. JEREMY describes himself as “faithfull, zealous and gracious,” and cherishes thefact that he can serve as a voice for the voiceless. DANIELA thinks she still looks the sameas in her freshman year, but feels her growingconfidence has helped her blossom. DELILArealized early what she has a passion for:excelling in a career in hematology.While many of their stories are relatable, whatmakes our scholars’ stories unique is that theyfound a way forward even though the odds weregreatly stacked against them. Waking up earlyand showing up day after day to school despitebeing in neighborhoods plagued with gangviolence; excelling while growing up in familieswith limited means; and having the courage tobe the first in their family to apply for and attendcollege. If you judge experience by the mileageand not the years, our scholars are far better offafter their four years in high school than before.HFS Chicago Scholars is grateful that somany people take a continued interest in itsscholars’ journeys from before to after. Without the generous support of our donors, theloving devotion of family members, the dailycommitment of our staff and regular coachingof our mentors, our scholars’ stories wouldn’tbe the same.
