ABOUT PSIWRITTEN EXAMINATION INFORMATIONThis Candidate Information Bulletin provides you withinformation about the examination process for a cosmetologylicense in the State of Minnesota.Instructors must each pass two written examinations: thegeneral theory examination and the state examination. Youmay pay and schedule for both examinations at the same timeor schedule for each examination separately. When taking theexaminations on the same day, if you only pass one (1) of theexaminations and fail the other, you will need to retake onlythe failed examination. Each time you retake an examination,you are required to pay the examination fee.The Minnesota Board of Cosmetologist Examiners hascontracted with PSI to conduct examinations. PSI providesexaminations through a network of examination centers in theUnited States. PSI works closely with the State to be certainthat examinations meet local as well as national requirementsin basic principles and examination development standards.SCORE REPORTINGYour score will be given to you immediately followingcompletion of the examination.The following summarydescribes the score reporting process:The Minnesota Board of Cosmetologist Examiners hasestablished the requirements for a cosmetology license.Application for licensure MUST be filed within one year of thedate on which the candidate passed the examination. If partsof the exam were passed on different dates, the one-yearperiod begins from the earlier examination date. If both partsare not passed within one year, candidates must retake bothparts. The instructor practical exam is administeredas a one-on-one in a classroom setting. Each skill is brokendown into its essential steps and will include important safetyand sanitation elements. The evaluator will observe thecandidate performing each skill and will document whether thecandidate has performed each step correctly. In each skill, thecandidate must correctly perform a specified number of stepsin order to pass. EXAMINATION PAYMENT AND SCHEDULINGPlease allow PSI 2 weeks to process a mailed registration. After2 weeks, you may go online or call PSI to schedule theexamination.ONLINERESCHEDULING/CANCELING AN EXAMINATION APPOINTMENTFor the fastest and most convenient examination schedulingprocess, register for your examinations online by accessingPSI’s registration website at www.psiexams.com. Internetregistration is available 24 hours a day. Log onto PSI’s website and create an account. Pleaseenter your email address and first and last name. Thisinformation must match exactly with the name shown onyour identification that will be presented at theexamination site. You will be asked to select the examination and thenenter your personal and contact information. You willthen be ready to pay and schedule the examination.Enter your zip code and a list of the examination sitesclosest to you will appear. Once you select the desiredexamination site, available dates will appear.You may cancel and reschedule an examination appointmentwithout forfeiting your fee if PSI receives your cancellation atleast 2 days before the scheduled examination date. Forexample, for a Monday appointment, you would need to cancelyour appointment on or before the previous Saturday.To cancel an appointment, you can use the PSI website, or call(800) 733-9267 to speak to a PSI customer servicerepresentative during PSI office hours.Note: You cannot cancel an appointment by leaving a voicemail message. You will not be penalized.Your exam will be rescheduled at no additional charge to you.EXAMINATION REVIEWPSI, in cooperation with the Minnesota Board of CosmetologistExaminers, will be consistently evaluating the examinationsbeing administered to ensure that the examinations accuratelymeasure competency in the required knowledge areas.Comments may be given in written form to the examinationproctor at the end of the examination. Comments may also beentered by clicking the Comments link on the function bar ofthe test question screen.3

Comments will be analyzed by PSI examination developmentstaff. While PSI does not respond to individuals regardingthese comments, all substantive comments are reviewed. If adiscrepancy is found during the comment review, PSI and theBoard may re-evaluate candidates’ results and adjust themaccordingly. Please use theWest entrance on Saturdays.REPORTING TO THE EXAMINATION SITEOn the day of the examination, you should arrive at least 30minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. This allowstime for sign-in and identification verification and providestime for you to familiarize yourself with the examinationprocess. If you arrive late, you will not be admitted to theexamination site and you will forfeit your examinationregistration fee.For security and identification purposes, all candidates willhave their fingerprint taken during the examination check-in.The taking of the fingerprint is an additional measure toenhance examination security.REQUIRED IDENTIFICATIONCandidates must register for the exam with their LEGAL firstand last name as it appears on their government issuedidentification. All required identification below must matchthe first and last name under which the candidate isregistered. Candidates are required to bring two (2) forms ofvalid (non-expired) signature bearing identification to thetest site. If the candidate fails to bring proper identificationor the candidate names do not match, the candidate will notbe allowed to test and their examination fee will not berefunded.PRIMARY IDENTIFICATION (with photo) – Choose One State issued driver’s license State issued identification card US government issued passport US government issued military identification card US government issued Alien Registration Card Canadian government issued identification cardNOTE: ID must contain candidate’s photo, be validand unexpired.4

SECONDARY IDENTIFICATION – Choose One Credit card (must be signed) Social Security card US government issued birth certificate with raisedsealNOTE: Student ID and employment ID are NOTacceptable forms of identification.If you cannot provide the required identification, you must call(800) 733-9267 at least 3 weeks prior to your scheduledappointment to arrange a way to meet this securityrequirement.Failure to provide all of the required identification at thetime of the examination without notifying PSI is considered amissed appointment, and you will not be able to take theexamination at that time.SECURITY PROCEDURESThe following security procedures will apply during theexamination: Candidates may take only approved items into theexamination room.All personal belongings of candidates, with the exceptionof close-fitting jackets or sweatshirts, should be placedin the secure storage provided at each site prior toentering the examination room. Personal belongingsinclude, but are not limited to, the following items:Electronic devices of any type, including cellular /mobile phones, recording devices, electronicwatches, cameras, pagers, laptop computers, tabletcomputers (e.g., iPads), music players (e.g., iPods),smart watches, radios, or electronic games.Bulky or loose clothing or coats that could be usedto conceal recording devices or notes, includingcoats, shawls, hooded clothing, heavy jackets, orovercoats.Hats or headgear not worn for religious reasons oras religious apparel, including hats, baseball caps, orvisors.Other personal items, including purses, ckpacks, wallets, pens, pencils, other writingdevices, food, drinks, and good luck items.Person(s) accompanying an examination candidate maynot wait in the examination center, inside the building oron the building's property. This applies to guests of anynature, including drivers, children, friends, family,colleagues or instructors.No smoking, eating, or drinking is allowed in theexamination center.During the check in process, all candidates will be askedif they possess any prohibited items. Candidates may alsobe asked to empty their pockets and turn them out forthe proctor to ensure they are empty. The proctor mayalso ask candidates to lift up the ends of their sleevesand the bottoms of their pant legs to ensure that notesor recording devices are not being hidden there.Proctors will also carefully inspect eyeglass frames, tietacks, or any other apparel that could be used to harbora recording device. Proctors will ask to inspect any suchitems in candidates’ pockets.WWW.PSIEXAMS.COM If prohibited items are found during check-in, candidatesshall put them in the provided secure storage or returnthese items to their vehicle. PSI will not be responsiblefor the security of any personal belongings or prohibiteditems.Any candidate possessing prohibited items in theexamination room shall immediately have his or her testresults invalidated, and PSI shall notify the examinationsponsor of the occurrence.Any candidate seen giving or receiving assistance on anexamination, found with unauthorized materials, or whoviolates any security regulations will be asked to surrenderall examination materials and to leave the examinationcenter.All such instances will be reported to theexamination sponsor.Copying or communicating examination content isviolation of a candidate’s contract with PSI, and federaland state law. Either may result in the disqualification ofexamination results and may lead to legal action.Once candidates have been seated and the examinationbegins, they may leave the examination room only to usethe restroom, and only after obtaining permission from theproctor.Candidate will not receive extra time tocomplete the examination.TAKING THE EXAMINATIONThe examination will be administered via computer. You willbe using a mouse and computer keyboard.IDENTIFICATION SCREENYou will be directed to a semiprivate testing station to takethe examination. When you are seated at the testing station,you will be prompted to confirm your name, identificationnumber, and the examination for which you are registered.TUTORIALBefore you start your examination, an introductory tutorial isprovided on the computer screen.
