FROM THE MASTER

Lyndhurst, OhioWebsite: www.forestcity388.comJune/July 2007FROM THE MASTERMy Dear Brethren,From my previous messages inour Lodge bulletin, it should beo bvious to everyone that I am a1,000% committed Freemason. Ivirtually live and breathe masonry, and my sole regret is that so manyyears passed before I “ found theLight”.Is it any wonder, therefore, thatexcept for my beautiful Caron, thegreatest event of my life has been as Worshipful Master ofForest City Lodge #388. The job has been ve rydemanding, and only a Past Master can fully appreciatethe rigors associated with the position. There are plenty of‘highs’ and sometimes there are ‘lows’, but when breakingbread with a B ro t h e r, or when bringing comfort to abrother in distress, or when entering another lodge as astranger, and then departing that lodge with a host of newfriends and brothers, all ‘lows’ evaporate leaving only asense of ex h i l a r a t i o n .I now enjoy a new sense of accomplishment. Our lodgehas a bit of a dilemma. We have a good core of young andtalented new masons, some of whom are alreadyoccupying the posts of Junior Steward, Marshall, and coAssistant Tylers. T h ey are, howeve r, too new to thef r a t e rnity and “green” in regard to masonry to beconsidered for an elective office in Nove m b e r. Wi t hanother year of ‘seasoning’, that condition will no longerexist. After much thought, and considerable discussion withsome of the elder statesmen of Forest City Lodge, I haveappointed Bro. Dr. Jackie Woldering as Senior Stewardfor the balance of this lodge ye a r. Bro. Woldering wa sraised in Golden Square Lodge in 1984, and became aForest City Lodge brother when the two lodges merged.Bro. Woldering has been married to Mary for almosttwenty-four (24) years. They are the proud parents of twobeautiful and bright, Patriotic children. As was told in ap r evious bulletin, their daughter is a graduate of theUnited States Naval Academy, and she is actively servingas a U.S. Naval officer in the Pacific. Her brother, thoughstill in college, is very active in R.O.T.C., and plans toenter the military after graduation. Bro. Woldering has aPhD in Computer Engineering, and teaches the subject asan Associate Professor at Cleveland State University. Hewas a member of the officer corps in Golden SquareLodge, and is quite proficient in much of the work that isrequired of an officer. Friendly, out-going, and hardworking, are but a few of the positive adjectives todescribe our new Senior Steward. Bro. Jackie – the verybest of luck to you.Fraternally,Mark H. Nathanson,Worshipful MasterMaster & Wardens Dinner DanceA Smashing Success. .As previously adve rtised, our Dinner Dance was heldon Saturday night, April 21st, at the Landerhaven Pa rtyC e n t e r. A packed ballroom dined on either BeefTenderloin or Potato-crusted Halibut. Both were a treatfor the palate. Our entertainment for the evening was the marvelousNightbridge orchestra. Their beautiful musical renditionskept most of the crowd dancing until just short ofmidnight. To quote our District Deputy, “Forest City Lodgeknows how to have a party”. That sentiment was echoedby all in attendance. My thanks to our wonderful co-chairmen - Wo r.Brothers Julian Cohen, Stuart Marks, and Mark Nye r.Thanks also to eve ryone who participated in thiswonderful evening of ‘Fellowship’.Bro. Marvin DanzigerChairmanMeet One of Our Newest MasonsBro. Frank Weiss was recently raised in Forest cityLodge. He is the proud father of Brian and Randy Weiss.Born in the 1940s, Bro. Frank is retired. A WONDERFUL EVENING OF COMRADERIEBrethren,It gives me a great deal of pleasure to advise allmembers of Forest City Lodge #388 F. & A.M., that weas a fraternity should be extremely proud and gratefulto all of our off icers and members who dedicatedthemselves to ensuring that our Annual Inspection, held on We d n e s d ay, May 2nd, 2007, was such asuccess. If for any reason you were unable to attend, you unfortunately missed a tremendous evening offriendship, fraternity and dedication. The evening began with a wonderful meal preparedby our own Cathy White and her staff, and served to allof us in excellent fashion through members ofDeMolay. I remember thinking as I sat at the table howproud I was to be a member of such a great fraternity.Brethren traveled from the far west side and the fareast side to share our evening of inspection. OurD e p u t y, Rt. Worshipful Brother Edgar W. Phelps, found himself surrounded by many current and pastDeputies, many current and past Masters of otherlodges, our Grand Orator, Rt. Worshipful BrotherBradford A. Goebel, as well as Most Wo r s h i p f u lBrother Thomas H. Galyen, Past Grand Master of theState of Ohio and current Grand Treasurer. The working part of the evening commenced ata p p r ox i m a t e ly 7:00 pm with our own Wo r s h i p f u lMaster, Mark Nathanson, opening the evening in theEntered Apprentice Degree. After respect was paid toour flag and country, and introductions properlyc o n d u c t e d, the off icers began their work. OurCandidate, now Brother Joseph Sherman, properly andin excellent fashion received his first entrance into ourorder. The work for the evening was excellent as it wasclear all parties had prepared and dedicated themselvesfor the benefit of our candidate. Having spoken to ourcandidate, he was ex t r e m e ly impressed with thededication and work. As your Lodge EducationOfficer, I was pleased and honored to have a small partin bringing light to our candidate. It was clear from thegreat number of past masters in attendance as well asthe crowd, which I am sure exceeded one hundred andfifty (150) in number, that Forest City Lodge #388once again has proven itself as a lodge dedicated tostrong work, fraternity, and the love of Masonry. To allof our Brethren living out of town and unable to attend,we miss you and thank you for your continued supportand dedication to our fraternity. We were all pleasedthat so many brethren from our lodge as well as otherlodges, were able to attend and enjoy the evening off e l l owship. I was part i c u l a r ly pleased to see thetremendous turnout from our recent one-day class andn ew candidates, and I thank them for theirparticipation. I also thank all of the many members andofficers who dedicated themselves to setting up thesocial hall and lodge room, so that all of us couldenjoy such a wonderful evening. As your Lodge Education Officer, I continue toremind all of us that one needs only to ask themselvesa single question in making a decision relating to ourfraternity and that is, “Is the decision good for thefraternity?” If the answer is yes, then go forward withthat decision. If the answer is no, then do not. Clearly, our evening of inspection was good for our fraternity, our reputation and our dedication to the craft.I would also like to share with you a little storysent to me by Worshipful Brother Jack Ross, Pa s tMaster of Mosaic Lodge A.F. & M. #559 GRC, and Ithank him ve ry much for his contribution to ourbulletin.A young lady was waiting for her flight in theboarding room of a large airport. As she would need towait many hours, she decided to buy a book to spendher time. She also bought a packet of cookies. She satdown in an armchair, in the VIP room of the airport, torest and read in peace. Beside the armchair where thepacket of cookies lay, a man sat down in the next seat, opened his magazine and starting reading. For eachcookie she took, the man took one too. This wa sinfuriating her but she didn’t want to cause a scene. When only one cookie remained she thought,“ah.What will this abu s ive man do now?” Then theman, taking the last cookie, divided it into half, givingher one half. Ah! That is too much! She was much tooangry now! In a huff, she took her book, her things, and stormed to board her plane. When she sat down inher seat inside the plane, she looked into her purse totake her eyeglasses, and to her surprise, her packet ofcookies were there, untouched, and unopened. The manhad divided his cookies with her, without feelingangered or bitter while she had been ve ry angry, thinking that she was dividing her cookies with him.And now there was no chance to explain herself norapologize. The moral – Remember ALWAYS that there arefour things that you cannot recover: The stone afterthe throw! The word after it’s said!Theoccasion after the loss! The time after it’s gone!Truly, words to live by!In closing, let me state that with the type ofdedication and work exemplified at our last inspectionit is clear that we as a fraternity are strong and ourLodge remains dedicated to brotherhood into the nextmillennium.God Bless this Great Countr y and all thosedefending same.Mitchell L. Alperin,Past Master andLodge Education Officer
