Asa result, many important grantcompetitions including International Research andStudies (IRS) and Fullbright-Hays Training Grants wereimmediately canceled, and the nation’s vast array of TitleVI centers were hit by deep and devastating cuts. Here at the University of Hawai‘i at M!noa, the threeNational Resource Centers – National Resource CenterEast Asia (NRCEA), Center for Southeast Asian Studies(CSEAS), and Center for Pacific Islands Studies (CPIS) –received a 47% cut, the National Foreign LanguageResource Center (NFLRC) suffered a 50% cut, and theCenter for International Business Education andResearch (CIBER) endured a 55% cut, as did all theirsister Title VI centers across the nation. With suchsevere cuts, many of their planned projects, activities, and events, which could have greatly benefited countlesslanguage educators and students, will have to beeliminated or greatly scaled back. The UH Title VI centers have collectively worked towardbuilding and bolstering foreign language educationresources in Hawai‘i and across the country over thedecades through a wide range of innovative resources, publications, professional development events, projects, and courses. It is hoped that funding for them will berestored to original levels for the following academic year(2012-13), so they can fully continue with their vitalmissions and work.covering the range from academic to just plain funNew Samoan Language BooksThe scholarly and creative expertise of two Samoanfaculty members, ‘Aumua Mata‘itusi Simanu (retired)
