The UniversityStanislaus State opened as Stanislaus State College in 1960,with a faculty of 15 and fewer than 800 students, at theStanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. The institutionmoved to its current location in 1965, gained universitystatus and its present name in 1986, and opened its Stocktoncampus in 1998. Today, the University has almost 700faculty and 600 staff and administrators and serves a diversestudent body of more than 11,000. Dr. Ellen Junn has begunher fifth year as President of the University, and she hasbrought a bold, new vision for its future. The University hastwo locations in the Central Valley — a beautiful, 228-acremain campus in Stanislaus County in the city of Turlock, andserving San Joaquin County, the branch campus in Stockton,in the city’s historic Magnolia District. The Stockton campusis home to 1,200 students and provides critical educationalaccess, with baccalaureate and graduate degree programsavailable to an underserved population. There is a strongcommitment to community partnership with all stakeholdersin Stockton and the region to advance equity and socialjustice initiatives.Our CampusStrategic PlanStanislaus State is a critical educational resource for 1.5million people in a six-county region, one of the mostagriculturally rich in the nation, but an underserved andunder-resourced area. In 2019, 18% of the population inthe region possessed a bachelor’s degree, compared to thestate’s average of 34% and a national average of 32%. TheCentral Valley has a diverse cultural and political landscape.Close to 50% of the population in the region is Hispanic,and there is a large African-American population in SanJoaquin County, as well as significant Sikh, Portuguese, andAssyrian populations. The PositionThe Dean of Graduate Studies and Research oversees the Graduate Studies and Research Office (GSR) and reports directly tothe Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides leadership for the graduate and research missions ofthe University. The Graduate Studies and Research Office provides support to the Graduate Council, the policy-forming body forgraduate programs, and is responsible for developing the Center for Excellence in Graduate Education (CEGE).Responsibilities of the Dean of Graduate Studies and ResearchThe Dean of Graduate Studies and Research is responsiblefor working closely with the Provost, departments, deans,faculty, Graduate Council, Senate, the Chancellor’s Office andother external stakeholders to lead, support, promote, buildand enhance vibrant programs for: (1) building an overarchinggraduate studies and educational experience and supportinggraduate academic programs; and (2), creating a campus climatethat enhances robust research, creative and scholarly activities(RSCA) opportunities for both intramural and external fundingfor faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students.In this role, the Dean of GSR will work with the Senate,relevant committees and other Divisions to assess anddevelop transparent, consultative and effective policies andprocedures related to graduate education and research.In addition, the Dean of GSR is responsible for: working closelywith the Graduate Council, departmental Graduate Coordinators,and Deans in overseeing and coordinating curricular andprogram review for all graduate academic programs (bothstateside and Extended Education degree programs); supportingand coordinating new graduate program development; assistingcollaboratively in the accreditation of new graduate programs;working with departments to provide oversight of graduatestudent academic probation and disqualification; workingcollaboratively in updating and producing the University Catalog;assisting and working with Colleges and the Division of StrategicPlanning, Enrollment Management and Innovation (SPEMI) andthe Communication, Marketing and Social Media Relations togather relevant data and information needed to market, recruitand retain graduate students.Additionally, the Dean of GSR is responsible for supportingand reviewing various programs, such as Graduate EquityFellowship Competition, CSU Forgivable Loan Program, CSUStudent Research Program, and Outstanding Thesis andProject Awards. Working closely with Graduate Council anddepartment Master’s Degree Coordinators, the Dean alsooversees and coordinates the review of Master’s theses andprojects and completion of culminating activities. The Dean8California State University Stanislaus Dean of Graduate Studies and Researchalso oversees, updates and publishes the Master’s Thesisand Project Guide for graduate students. In addition, theDean of GSR should work with Graduate Council to consideroffering additional supports to graduate students in the areaof tutoring, thesis support, and other possible support groups.The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (underGraduate Studies and Research) coordinates pre-awardactivities for all sponsored project proposals; researchesand disseminates information on funding opportunities;assists the campus community in identifying funding sources;maintains relations with federal and state funding agencies;coordinates research and grant activities that involve twoor more campus units; provides liaison to unit developmentand grant officers and participates in the organization andsponsorship of campus events focusing on student, facultyand staff research. The Office of Research and SponsoredPrograms assures currency of campus compliance policieson protection of human subjects, animal welfare, intellectualproperty, conflict of interest, and possible misconduct inresearch; staff support is provided to the Institutional ReviewBoard for the protection of human subjects.

KeyResponsibilitiesIn partnership with the Provost, the Dean of Graduate Studiesand Research will be expected to foster strong relationshipswith all campus and community constituents in developing andfacilitating co-curricular programs and services that enhancestudent outreach, enrollment, retention and graduation, witha critical focus on the CSU and Board of Trustees’ GraduationInitiative 2025 (GI 2025). Candidates must be conversant inthe metrics and methodology of showing annual progress onGI 2025 Key Indicators of Success, which rely on collaborationwith multiple divisions on campus.The DataThe PlanThe Dean must work with other divisions to support andimplement existing and new initiatives related to DEISJ(Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice). This very criticalfeature of the campus demands creativity and dedication toall that DEISJ stands for. Qualificationsfor the PositionThe Stanislaus State community seeks a Dean of Graduate Studies and Research to lead the graduate studies and researchmissions of the University, enhance the quality of graduate programs, create a climate for obtaining external funding, and refineand develop policies and procedures related to these areas.The successful candidate will model and promote transparent decision-making, possess unquestioned integrity, and have astrong record of building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning community, with a keen understanding of the relationshipbetween diversity, academic excellence, and our mission as a public 4-year University.Minimum Qualifications– Must have an earned doctorate or other terminal degreefrom a regionally accredited university, and the appropriateacademic credentials to qualify for appointment as atenured Professor in one of the colleges within the Divisionof Academic Affairs.– Must have substantial evidence of research and scholarlyactivity including grant funding.– Demonstrated significant and successful academicadministrative experience and proven leadership abilitywith considerable experience in preparing significantdocuments or other reports related to academic programs.– Experience in program planning, direction and coordinationfor policy development and implementation.– A minimum of three years of teaching experience at thegraduate level and experience leading a graduate program.– A minimum of five years of higher education leadershipexperience.10California State University Stanislaus Dean of Graduate Studies and Research
