PUTTER SELECTION GUIDE/THE ART OF PUTTING

A Modern CraftsmanInside the Scotty CameronPutter Studio in SouthernCalifornia, my team and I arefocused on one simple goal, producing the finest putters inthe world.Every day, we strive to learnmore about how the ball, theputter and the golfer worktogether, and how we canimprove that connection.Using state-of-the-artdiagnostic tools, we gatherinformation on how the world’sbest players approach putting. With those insights wecontinually experiment withnew designs, materials andtechnologies. This guide will help you selecta putter to improve yourperformance on the green. The key elements of putterselection are length and toeflow, but all aspects of putterselection – including shape, weight, loft and lieare explained.Whichever Scotty Cameronputter you choose, you cancount on an unparalleledattention to detail that ensurescomplete harmony betweenhow it looks, sounds, feelsand performs.Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters / A Modern Craftsman 3

ShapePutters are personal. Many players pick a shapethat complements theirstroke. Technical strokestend to prefer squareshapes and mechanicalnecks. Players that wantto rid themselves oftechnical thoughts tendtowards softer lines andflowing necks. All Scotty Cameron puttersare precision milled so thecritical angles of the face, sole and shaft ensureeach putter sits square. Each head is shapedand softened to flow tothe ground and inspireconfidence at address.Scotty Cameron SelectPutters are modern bladesand mid mallets designedto meet the requirementsof the world’s best players.Scotty Cameron GoLomallets have an easy toalign, rounded and racyprofile that flows elegantlydown from the shaftthrough the curved back.Scotty Cameron FuturaX putters feature a highMOI design with advancedperimeter weighting forstability throughoutthe stroke.Select4 Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters / ShapeFutura X

PathPutters are not pendulums.Putters do not swing vertically back andthrough along the target line. Becauseof lie angle, the proper putting strokemoves along an arcing path: slightlyinside of the target line, back to square, then to the inside again after impact. The proper length putter correctly setseye position just inside the target line, and the correct amount of toe flow6 Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters / Pathallows the putter to flow squarely tothe proper arcing path throughoutthe stroke. The best players in the world keep theface square to the arcing path andthe butt of the putter pointed at themidsection throughout the stroke.Selecting the right putter will help youdo the same.

LengthLength sets eye position. The ideal putter length sets your eyes1-2” inside of the target line to allow youto execute the proper arcing puttingstroke while maintaining good postureand balance (See the Path illustration). If your putter is too long, your setupposture will be too upright with youreyes set too far inside the target line. For a right-handed golfer this results in8 Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters / Lengtha path that starts too far inside and puttspushed to the right. If your putter is too short, your setupposture will be too hunched over withyour eyes set too far outside the targetline. For a right-handed golfer this resultsin a path that starts too far outside andputts pulled to the left.EyeLine

Toe FlowEveryone needs toe flow.In order for the putter head to move squarelyalong the proper arcing path, the toe of the puttermust “flow” throughout the stroke (see the Pathillustration). How and where the neck or shaft ofthe putter joins the head determines its toe flow.Minimumtoe flowMediumtoe flowMaximumtoe flowIf your stroke does not track along the properarcing path, choose a putter that helps correctit. If your stroke flows naturally, choose a putterthat flows with it. This will reduce the tendencyto manipulate the putter face with your hands. The best way to find the toe flow that corrects orcompliments your stroke is to hit straight, flat puttsfrom 20ft to see what works best.Bent and Straight shaft necks provide minimumtoe flow and can help players who tend tomanipulate the face with their hands. Thesestrokes tend to start inside the ideal arc, withmissed putts generally pulled.10 Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters / Toe FlowPlumbing necks provide a medium toe flow andare appropriate for players with naturally flowingstrokes who prefer a balanced putter design.Flare and Flow necks provide maximum toe flowand can help players with overly mechanical puttingstrokes that lack natural flow. These strokes tendto start outside the ideal arc, with missed puttstypically pushed.

WeightDUAL BALANCE DETAILSFor most players, the standard Scotty Cameron weight configuration willproduce the ideal balance and feel to execute the proper stroke. If yourstroke tends to decelerate, if your hands get too active, or if you have toomuch wrist break, you should consider a heavier head or a Dual Balanceputter that is heavier overall.Head Weight: 400gCounter Weight: 50gLengths: 36” - 40”Dual Balance Grip: 15”Loft & LieScotty Cameron Putter Studio research shows that a ball pushes downslightly into the grass on a green, and that 3.5 of loft is needed to lift theball up and on to the surface for a smooth roll. The key to finding the proper lie angle is finding the correct putter length.Standard lie angle works for the vast majority of players if they have thecorrect length.DUAL BALANCE MODELSDual Balance vs ConventionalPlayers that struggle to produce a flowing stroke with a conventional lengthputter should consider Dual Balance. The 50g counterweight in the butt of theshaft helps stabilize the stroke by placing weight above the player’s hands. Theproper length Dual Balance putter is three inches longer than the conventionallength you use. Grip down to your preferred length to keep the counterweightabove the hands for maximum stability.Futura XNewport 2*GoLo 7** Available 5/30/14
