THEManager’s MessageLast week, while waiting in the grocery checkout line, I overhearda conversation I suspect will be pretty common in light of allwe’ve been going through. Two women were lamenting the stateof holiday celebrations this year. They agreed that Christmas wouldn’t beStaffmuch, and Thanksgiving would be just another Thursday lunch sharedwith their husbands . no kids, no grandkids, no invited dinner guests. Ihave to admit they almost won me over.Once home, I began to think about Thanksgiving and all I knew to betrue. I remembered visiting Plymouth Plantation and learning that thePilgrims lost half of their members to disease and starvation during thatCommunity ManagerLaura Leathemfirst cruel winter of 1620. Nevertheless, they grieved their loss, welcomedAdministrative Assistantthe coming of spring, planted and harvested a successful crop, andLaurie Ignaziocelebrated their blessings with a feast of Thanksgiving shared with localNative American friends.MaintenanceIn 1863, during the height of the Civil War, President AbrahamMike NortonLincoln proclaimed that all Americans should observe a formal day ofThanksgiving each year in late November. He said citizens should askThomas NardiniGod to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife . and healWeekend Office Assistantthe wounds of the nation.”Kathleen NicholsAlthough less well known and with some controversy, even FranklinRoosevelt, in 1939 during the Great Depression, acknowledged theOffice Phoneimportance of Thanksgiving by designating the final Thursday in518-280-7340November as the official holiday.I’ve come to the conclusion that Thanksgiving Day has served as a healingEmergency Maintenancebalm throughout our nation’s history. It helps us acknowledge our518-338-9562vulnerabilities and inspires our belief in the coming of a brighter day.Happy Thanksgiving to all . enjoy!Laura LeathemCommunity ManagerMary Kay Porterfrom Clearwater, FloridaThe Summit At Glenwyck150 Dutch Meadows LaneGlenville, NY 12302
