Nursing Information Session: Applicantsmust attend an information sessionspecific to nursing program requirements.This must be done prior to beingconsidered for the nursing program.B. All nursing program applicants must takethe college placement test in accordancewith the admissions requirements statedon pages 16-20.C. Admission to the nursing programrequires the ability to begin EN 101, MA102, and BI 130.D. Students who do not meet all of thenursing program criteria will not beaccepted into the nursing program, butmay be accepted to the college whilecompleting prerequisites. Basic skills161course work is available for students whodo not meet placement test criteria. Basicscience courses (Human Biology I,General Biology, General Chemistry, andIntroductory Chemistry) are available forapplicants who do not meet the sciencerequirements. Students must receive aminimum grade of C in the course.E. Students who receive a grade of less thanC in a nursing course at another institutionwill not be accepted into the C-GCCnursing program. The only exception isfor LPN’s who received the less than Cgrade PRIOR to successful completion ofan LPN program.F. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or above(calculated by the most recent collegeattended) and a score of 50 or above on the"Kaplan Nursing Admission Exam" to beconsidered for the nursing program.G. Theserequirements must be met at least 2 businessdays prior to being able to sign up for a Kaplanexam."Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exams"book is available in the College Bookstore oronline to help prepare for this exam.Students must take the Kaplan NursingAdmission Exam and achieve a minimumscore of 50. Students with a score of less than50 can repeat the exam in an attempt toachieve a score of 50 or above. Students whoalready achieved the required minimum scoreof 50 can repeat the exam in an attempt toachieve a higher score. This exam can beattempted a maximum of two times percalendar year (January 1 - December 31). Thelast attempted test score will be used. Theexam will be given in January, May, August,September, October, November, andDecember. Please contact Betty Xedis in theAcademic Support Center at 518.828.4181extension 3233 for exam dates and times, andto register to take the exam.Students with a score of 50 or above on the"Kaplan Nursing Admission Exam" maysubmit Nursing Program Entrance Form.Forms can be mailed, e-mailed or dropped inthe lockbox in the Nursing Division byFebruary 1st.Students with a score of 50-59 on the “KaplanNursing Admission Exam” will receive 30points.Students with a score of 60 or above on the"Kaplan Nursing Admission Exam" willreceive points for the grade they received. Courses graded as "pass" will be counted asa grade of C.High School Students:Studentswhomeetalladmissionrequirements, are accepted to the college,score 50 or higher on the "Kaplan NursingAdmission Exam," and submit a NursingProgram Entrance Form by February 1st oftheir senior year of high school will beconsidered based on high school grades.Acceptance will be contingent on final highschool grades upon graduation. High schoolstudents who are offered a seat in the nursingprogram can choose to take a year of requirednon-nursing courses before beginningNursing 101. They are guaranteed a seat inNursing 101 the following year, if their GPAis 2.5 or higher and they submit another“Nursing Program Entrance Form.”High school students who do NOT submit a“Nursing Program Entrance Form” byFebruary 1st but meet all requirements(including the Kaplan Exam) by the end ofAugust, will be allowed to take non-nursingcourses at C-GCC for a year. They areguaranteed a seat in Nursing 101 thefollowing year, if their GPA is 2.5 or higherand they submit a “Nursing Program EntranceForm” by February 1st.

Columbia-Greene Community College 2020-2021 CatalogApplication Procedure:Students who meet all requirements for thenursing program and have a score of 50 orabove on the "Kaplan Nursing AdmissionExam," may apply for entrance into thenursing program. The Nursing ProgramEntrance form must be received by February1st (or the next business day, if the college isclosed on February 1st). Seats will be given tostudents achieving the highest number ofpoints. Students submitting the NursingProgram Entrance Form after February 1stwill be considered if seats are available.Students are only admitted into the nursingprogram once a year (in March). Students whodo not meet all requirements for the nursingprogram, or would like to take non nursingcourses, can be admitted to the college. If theymeet all requirements and are accepted intothe nursing program in March, theircurriculum will be changed to nursing.Program ContentA. Nursing courses are comprised ofconcepts and experiences that assist incomprehending the health-illness theoriesthat promote the highest level of wellnessin clients. Courses in the behavioral andbiological sciences, as well as liberal arts,areintegraltothelearner’scomprehension of nursing. Nursesfacilitate activities for clients to attain,maintain, or regain health, as well asproceed to a peaceful death. Theinteractive components of the healthillnesscontinuumareintegratedthroughout all nursing courses.B. Nursing courses and campus laboratorysessions are conducted at ColumbiaGreene Community College. A variety ofhealth-care agencies in Columbia andGreene, as well as neighboring counties,are used to provide students with theopportunity to participate in the delivery163of client care. Students are responsible fortransportation to all clinical agencies.C. During the first three weeks of thesemester in NU 201 and NU 202, clinicallaboratory will be conducted in thecampus laboratory setting.Program RequirementsA. The nursing curriculum may be completedin two years. The nursing courses must betaken in sequential order. The non-nursingcourses which are part of the programrequirements must be taken andsuccessfully completed before orconcurrently with the nursing courses asstated in nursing course descriptions.Nursing students must receive a grade ofC or better in NU 101, NU 102, NU 201,and NU 202, BI 130, BI 131, BI 210, EN101 and PY 101 to continue taking nursingcourses. A grade of less than C in anycourse will not transfer into the nursingprogram.B. Candidates must be in good health tosafely participate in the nursing program.An annual health assessment is required ofall nursing students and must be submittedto the College Nurse. Nursing studentsmust not only submit immunizationrecords required of all students, but arealso required to have a yearly flu shot andTB test, Hepatitis B vaccinations (or asigned declination), and to documentvaricella immunity. The due date for thecompleted health assessment form,including immunizations, will be given tothe students during their registrationappointment. Any student not submittingthecompletedform,includingimmunizations, by the due date will bederegistered from the nursing course.C. Students must have an American HeartAssociation CPR (Basic Life Support forHealthcare Providers) card effectivethrough May of the current academic year.

Anystudent not submitting a copy of the CPRcard by the due date will be deregisteredfrom the nursing program.D. There is a mandatory one-day NursingOrientation program in August for allstudents entering NU 101. Students willbe notified of this date during theirregistration appointment. Any student notattending the orientation program will bederegistered from NU 101.E. Students will need to spend additionaltime in classroom laboratory sessions todevelop required skills. Students must alsogo to some clinical agencies prior toscheduled clinical to research patients.F. Liability insurance is required and isavailable through the college at the time ofregistration.York State law, Federal Law, or the law ofanother jurisdiction will be subject to areview by an investigator for the Office ofProfessional Discipline, New York StateEducation Department, prior to a licensingdecision. Upon acceptance to the program,students must immediately notify thedivision chairperson of any convictions. Agraduate of the program may apply for,and take, the National Council LicensingExam for Registered Nurse. However, thelicense will be held by the State EducationDepartmentuntilanynecessaryinvestigation or hearing is completed anda decision is made by the Commissionerof Education.K. In order to be successful in the nursingprogram students must be able to: G. Special fees for nursing students’uniforms and equipment amounts toapproximately 800 in the first semester.H. Students will not be allowed to enter (orcontinue in) the nursing program if any ofthe following occur: The student is not allowed to practicein the affiliated clinical agencies.The student is unable to pass a drugscreening test required by a clinicalagency.The student is unable to pass abackground check required by aclinical agency.The student engages in ty of patient information. I. Students will have selected eveningclinical assignments during the secondyear nursing courses. J. Any applicant who has been convicted ofa misdemeanor or a felony under New 164Perform motor skills safely such as:lifting, bathing, positioning, andtransportingpatients;movingefficiently enough to meet the needs ofseveral patients in a timely fashion;lifting, positioning or moving anunconscious patient in order toperform life-saving procedures.Perform activities requiring manualdexterity: giving injections, operatingequipment and devices such asthermometers, blood pressure cuffsand IV pumps; efficiently operatingequipment and devices in emergencysituations;insertingand/ormaintaining any patient catheters orother tubes.Perform activities requiring accurateand efficient interpretation andcommunication of information inEnglish, both written and spoken. Forexample: responding to physician’sorders, reading and recordinginformation, and directing staff.Respond to signals, alarms, and otherdisplays indicating urgent patientneed, and take immediate action.Perform effectively under stress.

Students must maintain the minimumgrade of C in all nursing courses, a GPAof 2.0 or above, and maintain acceptedstandards of care in all nursing clinicalexperiences in order to continue in thenursing program. Each nursing courseconsists of three components: classroom,campus laboratory, and clinical. In NU101 and NU 102, students must average78% or better in both classroom andcampuslaboratory,aswellas“satisfactory” in campus lab on skills andin clinical. In NU 201 and NU 202,students must average 78% or better inclassroom and a “satisfactory” in bothcampus laboratory and clinical. A “U” ineither campus lab or clinical will result infailure of the course regardless of theclassroom grade. If performance inclinical is graded U, the student will benotified in writing and given theopportunity to demonstrate satisfactoryperformance. A student exhibiting unsafebehavior in clinical may not be given thisopportunity and may be dismissed fromthe course at that time, as stated in each

The studentmay appeal the decision as outlined in theCollege Catalog.B. Students can only repeat one nursingcourse one time.Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) ChallengeOpportunitiesA. Eligibility requirements: LPN challengestudents must meet all admissions criteriafor acceptance (page 161) and programrequirements (page 163). The challengeapplicant must be a currently licensedLPN (and provide an official LPNtranscript and license). Providing officialLPN transcript and license will meet theprerequisite for Anatomy and PhysiologyI (BI 130).B. LPN’s are not eligible to take a challengeexam if they have already failed, orwithdrawn from, that nursing course. Theonly exception is if the LPN program wascompleted AFTER the withdrawal orfailure.C. Licensed Practical Nurses attendingC-GCC who meet all admissionrequirements for the nursing program mayrequest to challenge NU 101 & NU 102.There is a 135 non-refundable fee paidprior to each challenge exam. Only oneattempt will be allowed to pass eachchallenge exam. The exam must be takenno more than one year before the studententers a nursing course.D. To challenge nursing courses theprocedure must begin in the admissionsoffice where the student’s eligibilityrequirements are evaluated. The studentmust obtain the “LPN Nursing CourseChallenge Application” from the nursingdivision secretary and obtain the required166signatures before scheduling the examwith the nursing division secretary. Theapplication should be submitted at leastone week before the exam date to allowenough time to obtain the signatures. Theexam for NU 101 can be taken inSeptember or January. The exam for NU102 can be taken in November or April. Astudy guide is available and can beobtained from the nursing divisionsecretary. The challenge exam consists ofthree parts - math, lecture, and lab skills.Part 1 is the math test - passing is 95%.Part 2 covers the remainder of the coursecontent - passing is 78%. Part 3 is the labskills - this is scheduled if the studentobtains passing scores on Parts 1 and 2.Challenge exams are rated pass/fail.Pass/fail grades are not counted towardGPA. Successful challenge of NU 101,completion of all corequisites, and a GPAof 2.0 is required for the student to beadmitted into or challenge NU 102.Successful challenge of NU 102,completion of all corequisites, and a GPAof 2.0 is required for the student to beadmitted into NU 201. Exams for bothcourses (NU 101 & NU 102) cannot betaken at the same time. Obtaining apassing grade on the challenge exam doesnot guarantee a seat in the requestednursing course. Admission will beconsidered based on: grades in othercourses, the grade received on thechallenge exam, current GPA, andavailable seats. LPNs cannot register forthe nursing course until the end of thesemester (after students presently in theprogram have registered and the numberof available seats can be determined).Standardized examinationsStandardized examinations are allowed forstudents who feel they are proficient in thefollowing non-nursing courses required in thenursing curriculum. (EN 101, EN 102, PY

(Passing the BI 130 and BI131 challenge exams is equivalent to a gradeof C.) However, it is important to note that aminimum of 30 credits of C-GCC classroominstruction must be completed for a degree tobe granted.Faculty recommendation will be based onthe following:Returning Nursing StudentsStudent will be notified of divisiondecision via email.A. Students who fail, drop, or withdraw froma nursing course or do not enter the nextnursing course the following semester arenot automatically readmitted to thenursing program. They will be consideredfor readmission the next time the course isoffered (if they meet the criteria and ifthey apply). Students who do not enter thecourse the next time it is offered will needto start over in NU 101.B. Students requesting to reenter NU 101 willbe considered with all other studentsapplying for NU 101.C. In addition to applying to the college(Application for Readmission form),students must submit an application letteremailed to the nursing divisionchairperson, requesting readmission. Theletter should include the following: The reason the student was notsuccessful or withdrew from thenursing course. What he/she has done to remediate. Specificplansforsuccessfulcompletion.The readmission letter must be submittedby January 15 for students requesting toreenter the nursing program into NU 101or NU 201. The readmission letter must besubmitted by August 1 for studentsrequesting to reenter the nursing programinto NU 102 or NU 202.
