Bachelor ofEngineering inBiotechnologyA 3½ year bachelor programmein close collaboration with biotechcompanies in and around thecity of Kalundborg, known asDenmark’s Biotech City.phabsalon.dk/engineering

An education for the futureThe Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology will teach youhow to apply your learning to solve technological problems.Youwill gain knowledge in chemistry, biotechnology, mathematicsand technological processes. This can be applied, for example,in the production of medicines, food, enzymes and materials. An example of a relevant process is fermentation using yeastto produce insulin.Other biotechnological processes that youwill learn about include the purification of wastewater andtransformation of waste into sustainable products or energy.Projects that take us from theory to practiceFrom the very first semester parts of the degree programmewill be project-based, teaching you how to work with and thinkin terms of projects. Learning to work in projects is completelyessential for almost all engineering jobs. Through projectsyou will learn to think in terms of concrete technological andpractical solutions based on the syllabus’s theory. The project-based teaching will ensure that after eachproject you have stronger interdisciplinary competenciesthat fall outside the traditional engineering competencies inmathematics, technology and science:n Collaborationn C ommunication, e.g. in the form of project reports orpresentationsn Project organisation and managementn P lanning and resource management(budget, etc.)Why study biotechnology inKalundborg, Denmark’s Biotech City?Several of the world’s leading biotech companies are located inand around Kalundborg. This obviously attracts talented and competent employeesfrom all over the world. It also makes sense to study forbiotechnology at a university college located very close to theindustry you will seek employment in after you graduate. This very close collaboration between education and industrymakes the biotechnology programme at University CollegeAbsalon completely unique.Several of your lecturers have personally worked in majorDanish and international biotech companies and you will alsoparticipate in guest lectures given by engineers who currentlywork in the business. This means that as a student you will haveaccess to the latest theory and practical knowledge. In addition, you will have excellent opportunities to find astudent job and internship in some of the world’s leadingbiotech companies during your studies in Kalundborg,Denmark’s Biotech City.Start working or continue your studies? After 3½ years, having gained your bachelor degree, you willbe ready to work immediately in the world’s leading biotechcompanies. But you can also choose to continue with yourstudies or return to your studies after several yearsGain employmentin the industry by studying a graduateanywhere in the worldprogramme in Denmark or abroad.Gain employmentlocallyn Q uality assurance, quality controland risk analysisn Literature searching2ApplyBecome abiotech engineerFurther education at universitiesin Denmark or abroadNowThe next 3½ yearsThe future3

Are you ready to study a Bachelorof Engineering in Biotechnology?Everyone involved in the biotechnology programme atUniversity College Absalon takes it for granted that you thinkchemistry and biotechnology are exciting and fun subjects. But studying for the degree takes more than that. Do thefollowing descriptions also apply to you?n Y ou think mathematics is exciting. Mathematics is a big part ofthe degree and this means that you will need to use all of themathematics that you learn in several courses and throughout thedegree.n Y ou want to learn to program. We use various software programsalready during the first semester. We do not expect you to be ableto program in the beginning but you must be prepared to learn anew ‘language’ both vocationally and technically.n Y ou are ready to become part of an international study environmentAt Campus Kalundborg, you will become part of an internationalstudy environment, with fellow students from more than 20different countries, where the majority speak and write English asa second language. This provides you with excellent opportunitiesto develop a strong international network. But it also requiresthat you ensure you are engaged in your studies, both socially andacademically.n Y ou are ready to spend many hours on your studies and in yourprojects groups. Studying biotechnology is a fulltime occupation. AtUniversity College Absalon you are therefore expected to spend atleast 41 hours a week studying. Your time will be occupied by studyactivities, preparation, project work, laboratory work and companyvisits.n Y ou value a high level of subject knowledge and practical problemsolving. We expect that you are thorough, quality-conscious,immerse yourself in the details and work hard to achieve your goals.n Y ou want to be tomorrow’s problem solver. You want to study aprogramme where you will work actively in engineering projectsthat are closely linked with the biotechnological production industry, supplying solutions for industries that include pharmaceuticals, foodand sustainable energy.6YaseminOzbolukProcess Engineerat Novozymes“We manufacture around the clockand if the wrong temperatureor unwanted pH value occurs, which can ruin the product, I haveto decide quickly what we cando to get things back on track. The product is first tested inthe laboratory but out in actualproduction, things may turn outdifferently and we have to changecourse but we don’t let it get thebetter of us. It’s a responsibility thatobligates us.”Yasemin Ozboluk is a bachelor of engineering and aftercompleting her studies joined the enzyme companyNovozymes as a process engineer. Among other things, shehas been jointly responsible for finding a natural solutionthat helps breeders to rear poultry that is healthier, absorbsnutrients better and grows more efficiently. This is just oneof many Novozyme initiatives and Yasemin is proud to bea part of a company that helps to feed the world in anefficient and sustainable way.Yasemin wants to use her acquired competencies in amanagement career and has been offered a position asteam leader at Novozymes’ Enzyme Analytical Laboratory, with responsibility for a team that works with the making ofsolvents for analyses using robots.7

A Biotech City on your doorstepOne of the world’sbest biotech citiesBelow are some examples of the companies that youwill meet during your studies:Kalundborg is the location for the world’s largest insulinfactory, the world’s largest enzyme production facilityand Denmark’s largest refinery. At the same time, publicand private companies together have developed theworld’s first industrial symbiosis with a circular approachto production. The main principle is quite simple – that awaste stream from one company becomes a resource inanother company, for the benefit of the environment andthe economy.EnergiVandMaterialerTissøKalundborg ForsyningArgoØrstedGyprocNovo Nordisk & NovozymesGrundejerforeningEquinorNovo NordiskKalundborg sMiljøteknikMaterialerMaterialsKalundborg ForsyningngNovo Nordisk & NovozymesGrundejerforeningNovo Nordisk & NovozymesGrundejerforeningNovoNordiskNovo Nordisk& NovozymesGrundejerforeningKalundborg Forsyningsk12VarmepumpeKalundborg ForsyningVarmepumpe13
