ADDENDUM AUG18Associate in Arts & Associate in ScienceDegree Graduation RequirementsIn addition to the General Education ReciprocityAgreement, Foothill College will exempt students who havealready earned an associate degree from another Californiacommunity college or who submit general educationcertification from another California community college(other than the nine colleges previously identified) fromhaving to complete any additional general education oradditional English/mathematics proficiency courseworkto earn the Foothill A.A./A.S. Local general educationrequirements may also be met by completion of the IGETCor CSU General Education Breadth Requirements. For moreinformation, schedule an appointment with a counselor.Requirements for the associate in arts (A.A.) and associatein science (A.S.) degrees include completion of all thefollowing: REV. A minimum of 90 units in a defined set of courses; A minimum of 18 units successfully completed atFoothill College;A grade of C or better in all core and support coursesused for the degree;A minimum GPA of 2.0 across all college coursesincluding Foothill courses; A major or area of emphasis of at least 27 units in acurriculum approved by the Foothill College CurriculumCommittee;The general education requirements are listed on pages71–72. If you plan to transfer to a four-year collegeor university, you should also review the specificrequirements of those institutions;English Proficiency: ENGL 1A or 1AH or 1S and 1T;Math Proficiency: MATH 17 or 105 or 108 or 180; and The student may apply only one English or ESLL coursebelow transferable freshman composition toward theassociate degree.Students seeking an official general education certificationfor use by a reciprocity institution are encouraged toreview their records with a counselor prior to submittingthe General Education Certification Request. Students whohave completed courses at other colleges and universitiesmust have official transcripts on file prior to submittingthe request. Requests for A.A./A.S. general educationcertification may be submitted to the Evaluations Office inRoom 8101.Petition for GraduationUpon completion of required coursework, you may requestto receive an associate degree (A.A./A.A.-T/A.S./A.S.-T)from Foothill College. You must complete a 30-minuteappointment with a Foothill counselor in order to verifyapplicable requirements and complete the graduationpetition. Please note that any applicable coursework fromother schools, in the form of official transcripts, must beon file at Foothill College at the time of completing thegraduation petition. The petition must be filed the quarterduring which the degree will be completed, by the applicabledeadline for that quarter. For deadline information, visitfoothill.edu/counseling/petition. Foothill confers degreesevery quarter, and the annual commencement ceremonyis presented in June. Becausethere are significant differences between the threepatterns, you are strongly advised to meet early and oftenwith a counselor to determine which pattern will best meetyour goals.General Education ReciprocityThe Foothill-De Anza Community College District hasentered into a mutual General Education (GE) ReciprocityAgreement with other community colleges to accept thegeneral education courses of these colleges “as completed.”In addition to Foothill, participating institutions includeChabot, De Anza, Evergreen Valley, Gavilan, Las Positas,Mission, Ohlone, San Jose City and West Valley colleges.Catalog Rights/Requirements for GraduationThe Course Catalog serves as an agreement betweenthe student and the college to identify courses that thestudent must complete in order to qualify for a degree orcertificate. The student has the right to select the courserequirements for a degree or certificate from any catalog aslong as continuous enrollment has been maintained.The reciprocity agreement allows students who obtaina certification of completion of associate degree GErequirements at one of the participating colleges to transferboth the GE coursework and graduation proficiencies to anyof the other participating colleges.Allied health programs reserve the right to change catalogrights by modifying program requirements based upon stateand federal accreditation standards.Additional GE coursework will not be required if the officialcertification is presented. Students will still be required tocomplete all courses or prerequisites needed for a major.The agreement also means that the other participatingcolleges will accept the Foothill GE pattern when presentedwith official certification.COURSE CATALOG 2018–201966Degree & Certificate Requirements

Continuous EnrollmentContinuous enrollment is important in deciding whichcatalog a student may select to determine degree orcertificate requirements. A continuously enrolled studentis defined as one who attended Foothill or De Anza collegesat least two quarters each academic year, excluding summersession. A single W-mark in a term qualifies as an attendedterm.noted on the student’s transcript. However, certificates ofcareer, competency, completion, proficiency, specialization,and skills are not reflected on the student’s transcript.Currency of Major/Certificate RequirementsIn certain Foothill College programs, currency of coursecontent is essential. The Foothill College CurriculumCommittee reserves the right to determine an acceptablelevel of currency of any course in any major or certificate.This means that a course may only be used toward fulfillinga certificate or degree for a prescribed number of years.Students should check certificate and major requirementsfor courses that are noted as having currency levels.Certification of General Education for TransferFoothill College will certify completion of up to 58 units ofthe 72-unit general education requirement for graduationfrom the CSU (page 74). IGETC Certification for CSU or UCrequires full certification of Areas 1 through 5 (page 73).You may request certification by completing the officialcertification form or transcript request form availablefrom the Admissions & Records Office in Room 8101 orEvaluations Office in Room 8301.Online DegreesThe Foothill Online Learning Program offers onlineeducational opportunities and services comparable to thoseavailable to on-site students. The program offers students avariety of online learning courses that meet the same highacademic standards as traditional classes.We encourage all students to consult with a counseloreach quarter for new course requirements, and for help inselecting courses.Course Numbering SystemMost Foothill courses are baccalaureate in level and can betransferred to four-year institutions. For complete coursenumbering guidelines, refer to page 132.Four-Year Institution RequirementsThe program also offers several associate degree programsentirely online, including accounting, anthropology, arthistory, economics, general studies/social science, graphicand interactive design, history, humanities, music general,music technology, psychology, sociology and women’sstudies, as well as general education requirements. Thesedegrees are fully transferable. A few courses, such ascommunication, English and math, may require occasionalmeetings or proctored exams.Articulation AgreementsArticulation is the process of negotiating and approvingFoothill courses with other institutions. Foothill has courseto-course and major-preparation articulation agreementswith every UC and most CSU campuses, as well as manyfour-year colleges and universities. This information isavailable to you through your counselor or via the internet.To review online information, visit these websites: Foothill College may be required to receive stateauthorization to enroll students who do not reside inCalifornia. Many states have either given the college thisauthorization or do not require authorization. However,some states require significant fees to receive stateauthorization. Due to the significant and/or recurring feesfor state authorization, Foothill College no longer permitsa student to enroll if he/she resides in any of the followingstates: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan,Minnesota or Wisconsin. The secret of our students’ success isthat they understand which courses are required for thefollowing three transfer elements:Course Identification Numbering SystemThe Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID) is astatewide numbering system independent from the coursenumbers assigned by local California community colleges.C-ID approval signals that participating California collegesand universities have determined that courses offeredby other California community colleges are comparablein content and scope to courses offered on their owncampuses, regardless of their unique titles or local coursenumber. Counselors are an excellent resource for transferinformation. Becausethere is a wide variation between requirements at differentuniversities, it is recommended that you decide on yourmajor and transfer institution as soon as possible. In additionto offering counselors to help you with this decision, FoothillCollege offers counseling (CNSL) and Career Life Planning(CRLP) courses to help you explore and evaluate options.Lower-Division Transfer AdmissionMany CSU campuses do not accept lower-division transfers.Be sure to check with the campus if you are consideringtransfer as a lower-division student. Students who havecompleted fewer than 60 transferable semester units(90 quarter units) are considered lower-division transferstudents. You are eligible for admissions consideration as alower-division transfer if you: Transfer to the California State University (CSU)For students interested in transfer to one of the 23campuses of the CSU, admission eligibility is based ontransferable units completed. You are considered a transferstudent if you complete college units after the summerfollowing graduation from high school. Admission officesat the 23 CSU campuses use a common set of factorsto make admission decisions for both classes of transferstudents. All campuses have higher standards for out-ofstate students and international students. Some campuseshave higher standards for particular majors. Finally, somecampuses have higher standards for all applicants. Upper-Division Transfer AdmissionStudents who have completed 60 or more transferablesemester units (90 quarter units) are considered upperdivision transfer students. You are eligible for admission ifyou:Associate Degrees for Transfer to the CSU SystemThe Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill1440, now codified in California Education Code sections66746-66749) guarantees admission to a California StateUniversity (CSU) campus for any community college studentwho completes an associate degree for transfer, whichis a newly established variation of the associate degreetraditionally awarded by the California Community Colleges.The associate in arts for transfer (A.A.–T.) and associatein science for transfer (A.S.–T.) degrees are intended forstudents who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in asimilar major at a CSU campus. Students completing theA.A.–T. or A.S.–T. degree program are guaranteed admissionto the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.In order to earn an A.A.–T. or A.S.–T. degree, studentsmust complete a minimum of 90 required quarter unitsof CSU-transferable coursework with a minimum GPA of2.0. Students transferring to a CSU campus in a major thataccepts the A.A.–T. or A.S.–T. degree will be required tocomplete no more than 60 semester/90 quarter units aftertransfer to earn the bachelor’s degree (unless the majoris a designated to be a high-unit major).
