Engineer CareerDevelopment programAt WEC Energy Group, we train anddevelop our engineers to become keycontributors to our electric generationand distribution operations.

OverviewOur Engineer Career Development programprovides new college graduate engineers witha broad view of our business through a trainingprogram consisting of rotational orientationassignments in several skill-development areas. Our engineering managers create hands-onexperiences and provide meaningful feedback thathelp new engineers develop the skills necessary tobecome contributing professionals. Engineer Career DevelopmentSix- to 12-month assignments are madein several of the following areas:Area planning»» Short- and long-range planning of distributionsystem capital improvements»» Voltage regulation, load analysis and forecasting»» Problem resolution support for design, construction and operating personnelCivil engineering»» Design and analysis of steel, concrete andfoundation structures»» Develop site plans and storm water drainageplansMaterialsand standards»» Evaluate andapprove overheadand undergroundelectric distributionsystem materialsand equipment»» Develop maintenance recommendations»» Perform technical training, field problem resolutionand failure analysisPlanning development and operations support»» Engineering hardware, software and database analysisdevelopment, administration and user support»» On-site support to System Operations for outagecoordination, switching procedures and contingenciesSystem protection»» Specify protection systems and perform fault andcoordination studies to ensure public and employeesafety and minimize equipment damageReliability»» Analyze and report distribution system outage causes»» Develop reliability improvement programsSubstation engineering»» Design engineering»» Project permitting»» Project management processes and tools Engineer Career Development forexperienced engineersOur Engineer Career Development program also canbe customized for experienced engineers, based on theindividual’s background and interests. Engineers withseven or more years of engineering work experiencemay participate in development assignments within anyof the areas listed for new engineers, plus:»» Distribution automation»» Field applications engineering»» Startup engineeringEngineering promotion opportunitiesAssociate engineer to engineer:(Performance reviewed every six months)»» Complete two years as associate engineer»» Demonstrate skills of fully qualified associateengineer and provide direction to others»» Plan and conduct work requiring independentevaluation and substantial adaptation ormodification of standard techniques andproceduresEngineer to senior engineer:(Performance reviewed annually)»» Have five to seven years of engineering experience»» Demonstrate use of advanced techniques, theories, precepts and practices of the field»» Apply sound and diversifiedknowledge of engineering principlesand practices in broad areas ofassignments and related fields»» Carry out complex or novelassignments requiring thedevelopment of new or improvedtechniques and proceduresSenior engineer to principal engineer:(Performance reviewed annually)»» Have 10 to 15 years of engineering experience»» Acquire professional engineering registration»» Plan and develop engineering projects addressingunique or controversial problems»» Conduct research in problem areas of substantivescope and complexityEngineering manager:(Performance reviewed annually)»» Have 10 to 15 years of engineering experience»» Professional engineering registration required»» Plan, organize and supervise work of staff ofengineers and/or other staff»» Demonstrate responsibility for performancemanagement planning of staff
