He has no stand outsuperstars, but all his players are dedicated tothe TEAM. This statement humbles me as Irealize how great a group of CRNAs we haveon your GANA Board. We are in the beginningof the GANA year and have already hit theground running. My first task as President of GANA was toaddress the NBCRNA proposed ContinuedProfessional Certification Program (CPC). TheBoard of Directors met with a representativefrom the NBCRNA during the 2011 AnnualFall Meeting in Atlanta. We learned that weshare many of the same concerns that otherstate associations are expressing. Surprisingly, however, there has not been a large numberof Georgia CRNAs who have expressed theirconcerns to us regarding the CPC. Truthfully, most of us are apathetic, until our way ofdoing things is threatened. The leadership ofGANA felt that certain aspects of the proposedCPC would negatively affect the way CRNAspractice in Georgia. Therefore, we sent aletter to the NBCRNA expressing concernson behalf of Georgia CRNAs. A copy of thatcorrespondence is included in this issue of Toand Fro on page 3.In October several GANA representativesattended the Composite Medical Board Meetingin Macon where draft guidelines for officebased surgery were discussed. The meetingwas attended by Christy Dunkelberger, GANAExecutive Director and Legal Counsel; BarryCranfill, Steve Smith and Rose Synsmir, GANAPast Presidents; and myself. Barry Cranfill alsorepresented of the Georgia Board of Nursing atthis meeting. GANA was well represented andwas able to make comments and suggestions toensure that CRNAs’ practice was not affected bythe guidelines.Rose Synsmir and I attended the GeorgiaAssociation of Nursing Students (GANS)convention in October. We were accompanied atour booth with a great representation of CRNAschools, Mercer and the Georgia Health SciencesUniversity. We had many nursing studentsquestion us about applying to CRNASchool andthe advantages of being a CRNA. Both Mercerand GHSU programs are graduating great peoplewho represent the CRNA community well. The GANA has continued to provide the AANAwith great leaders from Georgia who help toshape the nurse anesthesia profession. We areproud to continue that tradition. GANA hasnominated Leslie Jeter for Region 2 Director, and Steve Smith for the AANA NominatingCommittee for the AANA 2012 ballot. Both are(continued on page 11)

Dunkelberger, Esq.Happy New Year to all Georgia CRNAs!Pain ManagementThe area of pain management has been receiving a lot of press lately. Just recently, the local news has carried multiple stories of ‘pill mills’ being shut down by legalauthorities. DEA and GBI narcotics personnel have initiated a full court press toshut down these so-called ‘pill mills’ that are issuing prescription pain medicationsillegally. Additionally the Georgia Legislature and the Georgia Composite MedicalBoard (GCMB) are taking steps to fight this battle. The GCMB has publishedproposed Rules that authorize the GCMB to take action against licensees forunprofessional conduct related to pain management. The Rules set minimumstandards for prescribing controlled substances for treatment of pain and chronicpain. Interventional pain management is excluded from these proposed Rules. Onthe legislative side, one of the top priorities of certain legislators for the upcominglegislative session is to adopt legislation that establishes controls on prescribingand dispensing certain controlled substances. HB 184 has been pre-filed byRepresentative Weldon of the 3rd legislative district. HB 184 deals with monitoringthe prescribing and dispensing of Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substances. If you are involved in pain management services, I urge you to review the proposedunprofessional conduct/pain management Rules and HB 184.2012 GANA Capitol DayPlan to attend the 2012 GANA Capitol Day at the Georgia State Capitol on January25, 2012. CRNAs need to get to know their legislators on a ‘recognition’ basis; andGANA Capitol Day provides you an opportunity to meet and mingle with yourrepresentatives and discuss the issues that are important to CRNAs. One of theGANA goals for 2012 is to be more recognizable in the public eye as well as to thelegislators. Come out and join us for Capitol Day and make “CRNA” and GANAeasily recognized by the Georgia legislators.Guidelines Adopted for Office Based Anesthesia and Surgeryby the GCMBThe GCMB recently adopted Guidelines for Office Based Anesthesia and Surgery. These Guidelines place restrictions on physicians who offer surgery and anesthesiaservices in the office setting. Restrictions apply to the anesthesia services when neitheran anesthesiologist nor CRNA administers anesthesia. The adopted Rules arecurrently posted at the GCMB’s website.(continued on page 4)Need Malpractice Insurance?Contact AANA Insurance Servicesat 1-800-343-1368or obtain insurance informationfrom the AANA website.Mark Schmitz137 Southbend Dr.Carrollton, GA 30116Work Phone: 770-836-9806Home Phone: 770-854-7532Cell Phone: 770-301-8104Email: meschmitz@att.netTo & Fro2www.gana.org

November 10, 2011NBCRNA Board of DirectorsAttn: Mary Anne Krogh, CRNA, PhD, President222 S. Prospect AvenuePark Ridge, IL 60068-4001RE:Proposed Continued Professional Certification ProgramDear President Krogh and Members of the Board:On behalf of the Georgia Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and its 1039 CRNA members, I would like to provide you withseveral comments and concerns related to the proposed Continued Professional Certification Program (“CPC Program”).One of the concerns expressed by Georgia members is the requirement of thirty-five (35) continuing education creditsper year. Some feel this amount is excessive and will cause undue hardship and expense for those CRNAs who do notlive in close proximity to a metropolitan area. Those individuals, who for the most part reside in rural areas, will face theadded burden of needing to plan for out-of-town overnight travel, on multiple occasions, to locations where continuingeducation courses are offered. They just simply do not have ready access to testing facilities and/or continuing educationopportunities. They will also face the need to secure CRNA coverage during their times away and the loss of income frombeing away. CRNAs living in rural areas will have an added disadvantage over those who live in urban settings.Another expressed concern originates with some CRNAs who have been in the workforce for multiple years. Their issuecenters on the requirement to re-test for certification every eight (8) years. Older CRNAs feel at a disadvantage overtheir younger counterparts. They feel that this requirement of the CPC Program is an effort that will force them into earlyretirement.Along the same lines as the above-stated concern and stemming from the same group of CRNAs is the concern regardingthe failure to include a provision for grandfathering in the proposed CPC Program. Again the take away implication is thatthe older CRNAs are being penalized and being given no credit for their past experience. Finally, the Georgia Board of Directors is concerned that some CRNAs may withdraw their membership from AANA as aresult of the CPC Program. If there is a loss of members, the state budgets will be directly impacted. Georgia does notwant to incur any financial losses. Please give our comments your serious and careful consideration as you continue planning the CPC Program. We hopethere will be revisions to the current proposal. Thank you for allowing us this opportunity to comment.Very truly yours,Brent L. DuBois, CRNA, MSNPresident, Georgia Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Inc.cc: Debra P. Report from the Region 2 DirectorAround the AANAby Sharon Pearce, CRNA“You will never plow a field by turning it over in your mind.”– Irish ProverbIhave just returned from the AANA Fall Leadership Academy inNewport Beach, California. It was good to see so many committedCRNAs together in such a picturesque setting! For those of you whocould not join us, it was an uplifting and energizing meeting. We allworked together to tackle some of our profession’s pressing issues, brainstorm ways of improving our state and national associations, and operationalize the “Fifty State Strategy.” This initiative isfocused on better meeting the needs of our members through thestate associations. The ground swell of information came from thestate leaders in attendance. The AANA leaders will now use thisinformation to enhance our national association. It became clear thatwe all are striving to create a user-friendly organization that is not onlyresponsive to our members, but aims to advance safe anesthesia carefor our patients.Just a few examples of the actions taken by your Board of Directors inresponse to your feedback: Your Program Committee is creating the plan to hold the 2013AANA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas at the Mirage. Remember –what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! The Program Committee has heard you loud and clear: Augustis a difficult month to plan “time off.” The Board approvedtheir recommendation to move the Annual meeting in 2014 toSeptember. Neither the location nor the date has been confirmedyet. We realize, however, that many of you need to know so thatyour state meetings can be planned accordingly. Amid the storm of ideas generated by the Program Committee, the meeting schedule will be revised to make it easier for membersto maximize their CE time while decreasing the meeting length byone day. Be on the lookout for some creative changes that will takeour Annual Meeting far into the future! The new and improved AANA website will be going “live” onDecember 5, 2011. The search engine will be greatly improvedand layout will be more user-friendly. The current site willShadow a CRNAContact the GANA officeby email atganaoffice@bellsouth.netcontinue to work during this migration period, but no newinformation will be uploaded until the new site is active. The Board of Directors also met for 4 hours with theNBCRNA board. The NBCRNA will be reviewing allcomments received about the proposed CPC program throughtheir website, the AANA website, and letters and phone callsmade. An analysis will commence using a Delphi method.Three clinicians from the AANA Board of Directors willparticipate in the process. The NBCRNA Board of Directorsis scheduled to meet again in mid- January to review the resultsof the analysis. They will present their findings to the AANABoard of Directors at the Board Meeting scheduled during theAssembly of School Faculty in February 2012. Both Boardshave voiced a commitment to work together so that a solidprocess for validating continued competence is constructed andreflects member input. The AANA BOD also met with the COA. The COA Boardmembers are diligently working to increase efficiencies duringthis period of global economic uncertainties. They haveassured us they are operating at full power and are becoming“lean and mean” (in a good way!). In the spirit of continuousimprovement, the AANA Board also shared all feedbackwe have received from our members about our educationalprograms. The COA appreciated hearing our members input.A major revision of the COA Accreditation Standards for ourPrograms is in progress. The first call for written commentsis planned to go out in March of 2012, following a hearingon the first draft of the Standards at the Assembly of SchoolFaculty meeting in February of 2012. Please feel free to contactthe COA at 847-655-1160 to let them know of your interest inproviding feedback, or email Pauline McKenna of the COAat pmckenna@coa.us.com.Our annual effort to achieve 100% membership renewalcontinues. What would it say to our healthcare colleagues andthe general public if we could boast that 100% of the CRNAsin the U.S hold membership in the AANA? We have neverbeen a complacent group that seeks to divide and conquer. Our history reflects a profession that is engaged, committed, and overcomes challenges by working together. With that said, the Board voted to waive late fees for renewals through January6, 2012. In our desire to ensure that all of our state associationsand our national association is both strong and robust, we are(continued on page 7)www.gana.org5To & Fro

Report from the Public Relations CommitteeMercer School of Medicine andMedical Center of Central GeorgiaSchool of Nurse AnesthesiaNew Year New Opportunities!Class of 2011Graduationby Maegan Brass, CRNA, MSNAnew year almost always represents a great starting point for making changes! This year with the Public Relation’s Committee, it is no different. We are goingto be working very closely with the Government Relations Committee in fosteringour relationships with each of our local legislators. With 2012 being an electionyear, there will be many opportunities for us as CRNAs to do our own PR for ourprofession. Many legislators will be available at fundraisers and local offices to meetand speak with us which presents us a great opportunity to have some face timewith them outside of Capitol Day. Follow your local politics, find out when they arehaving meetings and fundraisers and make sure you attend; legislators love speakingwith constituents. This year the PR Committee will be looking into some new venuesfor getting our profession into the mainstream! I’m looking forward to seeing whatwe can do in 2012!By: Davida M.
