I.BACKGROUND:The state of Connecticut funds and operates the Connecticut Technical High SchoolSystem (CTHSS), a statewide system of 17 degree-granting technical high schools andone technical education center, serving approximately 10,200 full-time high schoolstudents with comprehensive education and training in 34 occupational areas. CTHSSalso serves approximately 5,500 part-time adult students in apprenticeship and otherprograms. Two full-time adult programs are offered in aviation maintenance.High school students receive a college preparatory curriculum and earn a Connecticuthigh school diploma as well as a certificate in a specific trade technology. Approximately45 percent of graduates go on to college and approximately 50 percent go on toemployment, apprenticeships or the military following graduation.Adult students are provided full-time post-high school programs, apprentice training andpart-time programs for retraining and upgrading skills. Many customized educationalprograms and services for youth and adults also are provided. These include English forlanguage learners (ELL) programs, tech prep relationships, handicapped andpsychological services, and a full complement of remedial programs. Program relevanceis ensured through an extensive network of technology advisory committees, authenticassessment and an aggressive response to the implementation of emerging technologiesof the workplace.The Panther PDA is a barcode scanner with wireless capability that allows the librarymedia specialist to conduct timely inventory procedures by scanning barcode informationwithout physically removing each book from the shelf.Currently, each book needs to be verified from the shelf list and physically removed fromthe shelf. An average library collection of 6,000 volumes involves countless hours toconduct this time-intensive activity. This technology supports the library media specialistin spending less time on administrative functions and more time working with studentsand teachers.The Panther PDA is loaded with Follett Remote software. In this way, the library mediaspecialists can circulate books or conduct essential inventory and circulation functionsand upload transactions via a batch process from the Panther into Circ Cat, the district’ssolution for catalog circulation. The reports that are generated from using the datauploaded from the remote inventory process facilitate collection analysis anddevelopment procedures.Currently, the CTHSS operates Follett’s Dolphin Scanners throughout the district.
