Two Truths Simply StatedBy Dan JenkinsThere may be some things in theBible which are difficult to understand, butthere are others which are so simply statedbut o en are easily overlooked. Two of thesetruths are that Jesus established the churchand that He never wanted it to be changed.on man, read the words of the apostle Paul. “I marvel that youare turning away so soon from Him who called you in the graceof Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but thereare some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel ofChrist” (Gal. 1:6‐7). The truth was so firmly bound on mankindthat to change it is described as a perversion.Read Ma hew 16:18 and no ceThen, read the next verse to see that the gospel couldhow easy it is to understand the promise Jesus made beforenot be changed. “But even if we, or an angel from heaven,He died about what was about to happen. “I willpreach any other gospel to you than what we havebuild My church.” Even a child can grasp these What would hap‐ preached to you, let him be accursed.” Do you seewords. Con nue to read the Bible, and you will see pen if all believ‐ how easily these words show that the Lord neverexactly what happened. Just days a er He ascendedgave any man, including the apostle Paul, or any an‐into heaven that church became a reality, and men ers returned to gel from heaven to change the truth that was re‐were added to it (Acts 2:38‐47). We must never over‐ the truths given vealed?look this truth so plainly stated.Yet, it is so easy to overlook these twoby Jesus?Read the words in Ma hew 16 which followHis promise to build the church. He said to Peter, “Whateveryou bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever youloose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Two chapters later,He expanded this right to reveal God’s message bound upon allmen to include others (Ma . 18:18). For the church to exist, there was a new testament which was about to be revealed, but when that truth was bound on this earth it was bound inheaven. We must not overlook this truth so simply stated. To see how firmly this new way of living was bindingtruths. God first gave that Old Testament to the Jewsand only God Himself could change it (Deut. 4:2; 12:32). WhenJesus gave us the New Testament, He gave this same mes‐sage—do not change it. How tragic it is that since Jesus le theearth men have changed the church and changed the truthbound on us in so many ways. What would happen if all those who believed in Jesusdecided to return to the simple truth given by Jesus and theapostles? What would the church look like if we establishedthat first‐century church in our day? Think about it!What Do I Need to Know About Baptism?Bap sm is one of those topics thatproperly bap zed, God (the Originator of bap sm) specifiedseems like it should be simple, but there arecertain steps that one must take. Before one can be bap zed,so many different ideas regarding it and sohe must be taught the gospel (Mark 16:15‐16), he must believemany different prac ces of it that one canthe gospel (Acts 8:12), he must be convicted of his sins andeasily get confused trying to figure out whatrepent of them (Acts 2:37‐38), he must confess his faith in Je‐he actually needs to know. Is there a way tosus (Acts 8:36‐38), he must arise of his own free will and beBy David Sproulesimplify this topic? Is there a way to stripprepared for the commitment that bap sm requires (Actsaway all of the confusion and get down to the basics of what a22:16; Rom. 6:3‐4). If one does not meet all of these prerequi‐person needs to know? There most certainly is! Andsites, then he cannot be Scripturally bap zed.it is as simple as just picking up the Bible and le ng Is there a way toBap sm is defined by God. The Bible s pu‐it do the teaching itself. What does it say?lates that bap sm is by (and only by) immersion. Thestrip away all ofBap sm is God’s idea, not man’s. It is im‐descrip on is always of one going down into andthe confusion then up out of the water (Ma . 3:16; Acts 8:38‐39).portant to know that man did not come up with theprac ce or the doctrine of bap sm. God did! This is and get down to Bap sm is referred to as being “buried” and thennot an “inven on” of man, therefore, man has no“raised” (Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:12). The word itself meansthe basics?right to regulate it (or confuse it). Everything that I“to immerse.” We need to let God define it.need to know about bap sm (and everything that has any au‐Bap sm is given purpose by God. If we strictly limitthority regarding the subject) is found in the New Testament.ourselves to what God says about bap sm (and not man), thenBap sm is a command of God. Jesus commanded“bap zing” as the means by which to “make disciples” (Ma .28:19), which is why the apostles “commanded” individuals “tobe bap zed in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:48). This is notop onal. It is required in order to be obedient to God, thus itmust not be minimized or altered by man.Bap sm involves prerequisites of God. Prior to being4we find that He clearly iden fies bap sm as essen al in orderto be “saved” (Mark 16:16; 1 Pet. 3:21), to obtain “the remis‐sion of sins” (Acts 2:38), to “wash away sins” (Acts 22:16), toget “into Christ” (Gal. 3:27) and to “enter the kingdom ofGod” (John 3:3‐5). Man has no right to repurpose bap sm!Bap sm is not a confusing topic. God has made itpre y simple to understand! The Bible gives it to us plain!

Have you heardsomeone on the TV or radio talk about the Bible and had thethought, “They’ve le their senses!”? The Bible says that isexactly what has happened!Paul warned his friend, Timothy, about thosewho “spread” a false message, “strayed con‐cerning the truth” and “resist the truth” (2 Tim.2:17, 18; 3:8). In this context, he calls uponservants of the Lord to humbly correct “thosewho are in opposi on that they may know thetruth, and that they may come to their sensesand escape the snare of the devil” (2:25‐26). God says thatthose who stray from and resist His truth (on any ma er) havele “their senses” and need to come back. Think about that! They no longer have “their senses.”Our responsibility is to unashamedly stand for truth and helpthose who are in error to see the senselessness of their rejec‐on of truth and to “come to their senses.” Hard? Yes! Butessen al! – DSKeeping score sets you up to fail! Two words that should never go together are “nobody ever.”Both words are superla ves, sta ng absolute extremes. Hasjust one person ever done this? “No! Nobody!” Maybe it happened just once? “No! Not ever!” Star ng a sentence with“Nobody ever” may intend to draw a strong conclusion, but itactually creates doubt and draws the conclusion into ques on.Some have been known to say, “Nobody evercalls to check on me.” Or, “Nobody ever sendsme a card.” Or, “Nobody ever speaks to me atchurch.” Or, “Nobody ever comes by to visitme.” Or, “Nobody ever shows any concern forme.” Each of these claims is suspicious, just bynature of star ng them with the absolute extreme of “Nobodyever.”But, may I suggest a solu on? Rather than “keeping score” onwhat others do (or don’t do) for you, what if you turned yourthinking around? Who can you call to check on? Who can yousend a card to? Who can you go by to visit? Truly, it is moreblessed to give than to receive! – DS5
