Message From The PresidentWelcome to Cerritos College!Founded in 1955, Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college serving an area of 52square miles of southeastern Los Angeles County. Cerritos College symbolizes many things to many people.This defining fact is reflected in the large number of courses, programs of study, and other opportunitiesavailable to students of all backgrounds and ages. We serve over 21,000 students each semester with a focuson transfer, career technical education, and workforce preparation. The college offers 113 associate degrees,30 associate for transfer degrees, 103 certificates of achievement. Enrollment shall be limited to students meeting properlyvalidated prerequisites and co-requisites. Exemptions for state orfederal statutes or regulations shall be established and the President/Superintendent shall establish procedures to establish exemptions forother practical considerations (Board Policy 5052).ACADEMIC FREEDOMCerritos College serves the common good by expanding the boundariesof knowledge and transmitting it imaginatively, preparing studentsfor occupations and preparing them to live successfully in a freesociety. The fulfillment of this function necessarily rests on thepreservation of academic freedom which protects the rights ofteachers to teach and students to learn.The exercise of academic freedom is necessary if society is to receivethe benefits of honest intellectual search and unbiased transmittal ofknowledge. Cerritos College scholars must be free from pressures ordemands which restrict their intellectual searches. The transmittalof knowledge at Cerritos College shall not be impeded by specialinterests, conflicting public opinion, or unpopularity. CerritosCollege shall avoid a climate of education in which either studentsor faculty dare not assert their ideas for fear of reprisal.
