12Women’s and Gender Studies MinorWomen’s & Gender StudiesWomen’s and Gender Studies is a thriving field of study at CSULA. Ourlocation in the diverse metropolis of Los Angeles grounds our understandingof genders and sexualities as it intersects with races/ethnicities, nations, andclasses in local, national, and global contexts.Housed in the Department of LiberalStudies, CSULA offers a Major inLiberal Studies with a Concentrationin Women’s and Gender Studies (48units plus the 20 unit core courses inLiberal Studies), an undergraduateMinor in Women’s and GenderStudies (32 units) and a graduate/post-Baccalaureate Certificate inthe Study of Women, Genders, andSexualities (24 units). The Women’sand Gender Studies AdvisoryCommittee oversees programdevelopment and curricular growth.The Liberal Studies Major witha Concentration in Women’sand Gender Studies enablesundergraduate students toundertake a focused course ofstudy emphasizing theories andresearch in the field of Women’s andGender Studies. The concentrationprepares students for careers inlaw, policy advocacy, teaching, andnon-profit work. Students may alsoconsider continuing their studiesin an M.A. and/or Ph.D. programin areas such as History, English,Women’s and Gender Studies, orAmerican Studies.A Minor in Women’s and GenderStudies supplements a Majorprogram in any field. Students maycombine the Minor with a Major inHistory, Communication Studies,Chicana/o Studies, Sociology,Liberal Studies, Psychology, andPolitical Science. A Minor providesresearch skills and training usefulfor careers in law, medicine, criminaljustice, social work, non-profitagencies, public relations, policyadvocacy, and teaching.Post-Baccalaureate students(those already holding a B.A.degree) will find that a Certificatein the Study of Women, Genders,and Sexualities can fulfill severalcareer and educational goals.
