IntroductionThis course description guide is presented to help you develop an individualized plan of studybased on your interests, abilities and goals. Brief course descriptions will help you familiarize yourself withboth required, elective and career and technical education courses offered during the 18-19 school year.Please make careful decisions about your course selections since your schedule will bedetermined based on the choices you make at this time. The counselors at Tonganoxie High School aremore than happy to help you throughout this decision making process.Please consider the following as you make selections for the courses you take next year:1. Review the graduation requirements. It is a student’s responsibility to be sure all graduationrequirements are met.2. Review the course descriptions, paying close attention to the prerequisites and grade levels.3. Take advantage of the many electives that are offered. Electives can help you make decisionsabout your future. The counselors recommend taking a variety of courses to help with this.4. Keep doors open. Recent research shows that students will hold many jobs in their lifetime. Getinvolved and obtain skills that you can apply to your life after high school.5. Take advantage of the dual enrollment courses or Tech Release while still in high school. This willsave you time and money after you leave THS!NOTE: The courses listed in this booklet are TENTATIVE offerings for the next academic year and arebased on the numbers during the spring enrollment and some are only offered every other year.An enrollment forms will be made available with this booklet. Grade Placement and Grading SystemsA student must earn a specified number of credits in order to advance to the next grade level.Below is a list of placement guidelines:Sophomore Standinga minimum of 6 credits by August 1Junior Standinga minimum of 13 credits by August 1Senior Standinga minimum of 20 credits by August 1Locker assignments, class assignments, yearbook placement, etc, are all determined by the student’sgrade placement at the beginning of the school year.No movement from one grade level to the next will be made during the academic school year.Grading SystemUn-Weighted WeightedGPAGPAA45B34C23D11F00Each student will receive a grade point average(GPA) based on a 4 point system for their courseswork at Tonganoxie High School. Their GPA isreported on their transcripts and is used todetermine class rank and valedictorian andsalutatorian.Students will also receive a second grade pointaverage that gives all Honors, AP (AdvancedPlacement) and Dual Credit courses a weightedgrade based on a 5 point scale. Both weighted andunweighted class rank will be indicated on thetranscript.Un-Weighted GPA will be used to determineValedictorian and Salutatorian. Please see SeniorHonors portion of Introduction for more information.Accelerated High School ProgramsHonors Courses –Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will have the opportunity to enroll in Honors English, Math and/orScience classes if they have made at least a B average in the previous year and have instructor approval.These classes will be fast paced, cover more rigorous content and focus on critical and analytical thinking.Often times, there is a summer assignment for these courses that need to be complete by the first day ofthe fall semester. Students are encouraged to touch base with the teacher prior to leaving for summerbreak to obtain the assignment and any materials needed to complete the summer assignment.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses THS offers a number of advanced placement courses. These courses are pre-college curriculum coursesand are extremely rigorous. The course covers more content, moves at a faster pace and challengesstudents to develop stronger critical and analytical thinking skills. There are AP Exams given towards theend of the course, typically April, and depending on the score on their exams, students can earn collegecredit. The exams cost about 90. Regardless of the student’s score on the exam, their transcript willindicate that they took the AP course.Dual Credit College Courses -Students have the opportunity to enroll in dual credit courses and earn credits for high school andcollege. THS and Kansas City Kansas Community College are in partnership to offer these courses tostudents who pass the Accuplacer Test with a certain score. Students are responsible for all fees andtextbook costs. Both are set by KCKCC. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit in classestaught by THS faculty and graduate with a significant number of college credit hours which are transferableto most Kansas Regents schools.Online Courses, KCKCC -THS Seniors or IEP students who are looking for educational opportunities beyond the available curriculumat THS may be able to enroll into an online course through Kansas City, Kansas CommunityCollege. Students may take this course entirely independent of their school day or they may elect toschedule an hour of their school day to work on their online course. The KCKCC course may be eligible fordual credit at KCKCC and THS with approval from the principal.Interested students need to qualify for enrollment by scoring at the appropriate level on the KCKCCplacement exam and receiving permission from the THS principal. THS students will need to complete allKCKCC enrollment procedures and pay for any necessary tuition, class books, materials or otherassociated costs with the course. Students should visit with a THS counselor before enrolling.REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: Please check with the KCKCC bookstore,http://www.kckccbookstore.com.,for the required texts for your particular class.

Credit RecoveryStudents who fail a core subject course or other course required for graduation, will be re-enrolled to ageneral education classroom. Should they fail a second time, students are then placed into creditrecovery class.The Tonganoxie Learning Center (TLC) courses, are self-paced and are done virtually. The TLC is underthe supervision of a classroom teacher who can monitor progress and assist when necessary. Studentsmay only enter the TLC at start of each semester (fall or spring) and will have until the end of thatsemester to complete their course.TLC Classes are for credit recovery ONLY and not for credit acceleration. If you are interested incompleting/graduating early, please see a counselor to discuss the process of graduating early andopportunities for credit acceleration, should you need that.Career PathwaysStudents will develop an Individual Plan of Study. This is done in conjunction with the student’s Triple Aadvisor, the school counselors, a program called Career Cruising and the student’s career and academicinterests.All jobs and careers available in the United States fall into one of sixteen groupings, known as CareerClusters. Career Cruising will recommend a Cluster for your student based on a simple questionnaire.Students are not required to follow the recommendation made by Career Cruising, but it does offer a goodstarting point for students who are struggling to find a direction.THS offers specific courses within a Career Pathway that would prepare students for a job in a givenCareer Cluster. Students are encouraged to take a variety of courses to explore opportunities and find agood match. Each pathway has introductory, technical and application level courses. A student isencouraged to complete a pathway as there are opportunities available for scholarships if they complete apathway. Please see the Career and Technical Education section for more information.

Technical EducationTHS students are able to access unique opportunities once they reach their junior year. If students are ontrack to graduate, students are able to enroll in Washburn Tech (http://www.washburntech.edu/ ).Tech courses are designed to provide high school students with a head start towards skilled trainingleading to employment or additional education. Students maycontinue after high school with their program to complete certifications in certain areas.Guidelines for Students Interested:1. Transportation is provided by USD 464 and students are required to sign a transportation contract.2. Students are expected to maintain good attendance at THS and Washburn Tech as well aspassing grades at both THS and Washburn Tech in order to stay in the program.3. If classes are in session at the tech school, students are required to attend, even if school is not insession at THS.4. There is an application process for enrolling. Please see the links above for information onapplication and enrollment with either school.5. Students with poor discipline, attendance and tardy records may be denied entry into the techprograms.6. Students will be required to purchase consumables materials. (This may include but is not limitedto: scrubs or special uniforms required by program, textbooks or other course materials. While thisis an investment, students are able to keep these item and are not required to return them whenthey finish the program. Students will also be required to pay for their certification tests. (ie. CNAtest).7. Students who enroll in a program and later decide to drop it, will be required to pay enrollmentand/or other fees that USD 464 has paid.

Senior AgreementSeniors interested in senior agreement must get permission from parent/guardian, the counselor and anadministrator. Senior Agreement would allow for early dismissal from school to pursue an after-school job,post-secondary education or an internship. Seniors must be on track to graduate, be able to provide theirown transportation and have their senior portfolio completed. Students must apply for senioragreement. Please see either Mrs. George or Mrs. Martin for the application. Students involved inKSHSAA events, either athletic or non-athletic must maintain their eligibility by enrolling in at least 5courses.College TestingACTThe ACT is comprised of four multiple choicetests: English, Mathematics, Reading andScience. The ACT with writing include the fourmultiple choice tests and a writing test; a 40minute essay test that measures your writingskills. Students do have the option to take theACT multiple times. We recommend studentstake it their junior year and again their senioryear.Testing dates for the 18-19 school year arelisted in the table to the right.THS is not a testing site; however, the test isoffered at nearby schools. ACT informationincluding test prep and registration is availableat www.actstudent.orgSATThe SAT measures skills in Writing and Language, Reading, and Mathematics. The SAT is sometimes thetest of choice for select schools, but most places will take either ACT or SAT. Make sure to speak with yourcollege admissions counselor to discuss which test scores they accept.To access SAT information go to www.collegeboard.orgPSATThe PSAT measures the same skills as the SAT. For juniors, the PSAT is the qualifying test for theNational Merit Scholarship Program. Academically strong sophomores and juniors are usually the oneswho take this test. The PSAT is usually offered on a Wednesday morning in mid-October.

Senior Honors Valedictorian/Salutatorian RequirementsTonganoxie High School honors one student from the graduating class as valedictorian and one assalutatorian. These students shall have demonstrated high academic performance in the acquisition ofknowledge, intellectual skill, and respect for the ideas and values of our culture.The valedictorian shall be the student with the highest grade point average among those graduates whohave completed the required courses for the Kansas Board of Regents State Scholarship. They are asfollows:English4 yearsMathematics4 years to include Algebra I, Geometry,Algebra II and one higher level mathScience3 years to include Biology, Chemistry and PhysicsSocial Science3 yearsForeign Language2 yearsCandidates for valedictorian must also complete three of the following courses: Honors English IV, HonorsChemistry II, Honors Biology II, Calculus, or Spanish IV.In the event of a tie when computing the grade point average and all course requirements have been met,the valedictorian will be determined by the highest comprehensive score on the ACT test (AmericanCollege Testing Program). The student with the second highest ACT score will be salutatorian.

AthleticsKansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Eligibility GuidelinesIn order for students to participate in a KSHSAA activity, either athletic or non-athletic, they must meet thefollowing requirements:1. Pass at least five courses the previous semester.2. Be enrolled in a minimum of five new courses the semester(s) of participation.3. Athletes must present a completed KSHSAA Physical Form prior to starting practice.For additional information, go to www.KSHSAA.org.NAIA ClearinghouseIf you are interested in being a Division I or Division II Athlete in college, you are required to meet certainrequirements to be considered eligible the semester after you graduate high school. You are required totake 16 core courses in the following areas: English, Math, Physics, Social Science, Foreign Language,Non-Doctrinal Religion or Philosophy. You can visit the eligibility center for more information or contactyour school counselor for more information.Division I Requirements16 Courses: Ten core courses completed before thestart of seventh semester. Seven of theten must be in English Math or Science. Corresponding test score (ACT) andcore-course GPA of 2.3 Graduate from High SchoolDivision II Requirements16 core Courses: 3 years of English 2 years of Math 2 years of Science 3 years of additional English, Math andScience 2 years of Social Science 4 years of additional courses (from anyarea above or foreign language,religion/philosophy)You will need to register and the NAIA Eligibility Center will determine your eligibility based on youracademic record and additional information you provide.
