The latest blow to InselAir’s businesswas the advice by the IATA(International Air Travel Association)agencies to no longer conduct businesswith InselAir, because of nonpayment. On a positive note there was an announcement that InselAir and SynergyAerospace plan to reach an agreementwithin two weeks, leading to a final accord about a far-reaching partnershipwithin four to six weeks. Synergy Aerospace is Latin America’s leading com-mercial aviation corporation. It’s alsothe main shareholder of Avianca Holdings of Colombia. This is the first goodnews for InselAir in a long time. According to Curacao’s Minister of Economic Development, Eugene Ruggenaath, an agreement with Avianca isimportant for InselAir’s long term survival. InselAir is flying a very limitedflight schedule, making use of two Fokker 50 propeller aircraft. It is back tobasics which means flying only amongthe ABC Islands and maybe St. Maarten.According to the company’s new interimCEO, Gilles Filiatreault, said this is theircore business. The second might be tofly to and from Suriname and Miami.Venezuela, which used to be the “pot ofgold” for InselAir, is not part of the plansFor 2016 InselAir had a 12 millionloss. About 250 employees were laid offas a result of the downsizing. Accordingto the management, they are trying tokeep the layoffs to a minimum by allowing sharing of work hours which willallow more people to stay at the company. Filiatreault is convinced that byMay or June the company will be able tostart paying its creditors again. The TCB’s Maurice Adriaens andAngelo Domacasse, as appreciation fortheir work, gave all the Bonaire of InselAir employees a box with somethingto eat and drink, so that they can getmore energy to continue with their jobs.It was the tourist board’s recognition ofthe employees’ perseverance during thetough times that Insel Air is goingthrough and their commitment to assistthe passengers.
