MISSION, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVESCSUB MISSION STATEMENTCalifornia State University, Bakersfield is a comprehensive public universitycommitted to offering excellent undergraduate and graduate programs thatadvance the intellectual and personal development of its students. The University collaborateswith partners in the community to increase the region's overall educational level,enhance its quality of life, and support its economic development(http://www.csub.edu/about csub/mission/index.html).Department of Social Work MissionThe mission of the California State University, Bakersfield, Department of SocialWork, is to prepare students for social work practice and leadership at theadvanced generalist level. Graduates possess the knowledge, values, and skillsrequired to competently and ethically work with individuals, families, groups,organizations, and communities using best practices. The Department iscommitted to improving social conditions in the Central Valley by promotingculturally responsive practice, social justice, and life-long learning.Department of Social Work GoalsThe Department of Social Work is committed to the following goals, which arederived from the mission statement. These goals are consistent with the Councilon Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Educational Policy, Section 1.1.The program goals are to:1.2.3.4.To prepare advanced generalist social workers who identify with thesocial work profession and model the values and ethics of theprofession.To prepare graduates to continue their professional growth anddevelopment throughout their careers.To prepare students for leadership roles in an interprofessionalenvironment within the community.To prepare advanced generalist social workers who are competentto engage in autonomous practice within the context of multiplesystems and diverse environments, using a multidimensionalperspective applicable across the lifespan.10

5.6.To prepare advanced generalist social workers who use researchknowledge and skills to evaluate their social work practice.To prepare advanced generalist social workers to advocate forhuman rights and social and economic justice in the broader socialenvironment.The Department is committed to preparing social workers for competent andethical advanced generalist practice. Recognizing the region’s need forprofessional social workers, the Department has developed flexible schedules toallow full-time, part-time, and advanced standing study options. Our commitmentto promoting practice excellence in a variety of settings is achieved through anadvanced generalist concentration.The Department derived program objectives from the program goals andCSWE’s Educational Policy, Section 3.
