UK Brownies BadgesIntroductionThe Brownie program was started in 1914 for girls younger than Guides. Originally,unit members were called Rosebuds, but in 1915 the name was changed toBrownies.The Consolidated Catalogue and List of UK and British Empire Girl Guide Badges(Centennial Issue) by Thelma Newell identifies 7 different styles of Brownie badges.There are also a number of variations in threads, backing and colour hues within thesestyles. The dates of introduction/deletion are based on publications, however, it is likelythat old stocks of badges would continue to be used until exhausted before changingover to the new style.1915-1932Triangular; red, green, blue and yellow felt: symbols in yellow, brown, green, blue,white, black or red stitching. Could be hand embroidered.1932-1935Triangular; red, green, blue, yellow and brown; cotton: symbols and text "GIRLGUIDES" in yellow, brown, green, blue, white, black or red stitching. Unbound andbound versions.1935-1959Triangular; brown; felt: symbols and text “GIRL GUIDES” in yellow stitching, with blackand white details.1959-1968Triangle; brown; cotton: symbols and text “GIRL GUIDES” in yellow stitching, withblack and white details. Open overlock binding.1968-1992Triangle; brown; cotton: symbols and text “GIRL GUIDES” in yellow stitching, withblack, white, orange and green details. Smooth overlock binding.1992-2003Triangle; brown; cotton: symbols and text “BROWNIE GUIDES” in yellow stitching, withblack, white, green, red, pink and blue details. Smooth overlock binding.2003In 2003 there were major changes to the Brownie program. The badges changed tobrightly coloured squared diamonds. Cotton: images fully coloured, blue/white Trefoil,and text, name of badge, in blue. Smooth overlock binding in blue. Advanced badgeshave a blue background.2014Special Centenary Issue. Background and binding colours are reversed and ‘100’ isadded.1
