President’s LetterWelcome to a new year with Women Painters of WashingtonThe last couple of years have been a unique experience for us, as we scrambled individually and as a group, to make it through the pandemic times. We learned new tricksand continued to make art, connect with each other, and exhibit our work. It wasn’ta pain free easy process and we’re still trying to figure out how to maintain and makeconnections. WPW first organized almost a hundred years ago, it was a handful ofwomen in the Seattle area making art together and exhibiting their work annually.Initially they met in a member’s home, and later secured a meeting place in the SeattleArt Museum. A couple of generations later WPW was gifted with permanent galleryspace in the COLUMBIA TOWER. At that time the member artists were primarily located in the Seattle area, as were the exhibits. What started out as a handful of professional women artists in Seattle has grown into a large professional organization withhistorical roots and a respected member of the community. The COLUMBIA TOWER gallery space became a great way for members to participatein WPW, and support each other. Now we have a website where all the business ofmembership can be completed. Past information about the group, exhibits, rosters, and current newsletters can be found. We’ve added a 3D virtual gallery tour of eachexhibit. Now the entire world can view our work.In 2020 COVID enabled us to stay in touch via Zoom and allowed state-wide memberartists to participate. In the forceable future our monthly meetings will continue to beonline, with a number of in-person events through out the year.“Now, membership includes theneed to be multi-faceted andskilled.”Membership in WPW is still based on your professional art abilities, that’s beenconsistent from the start. Now, membership includes the need to be multi-facetedand skilled—to be digitally capable and fluent in social media. You’ll need to applytraining from all your experience, whether it’s accounting or marketing, psychology orresearch to keep WPW growing.Membership is an investment, and the return on this investment has the potential tobe deep and long-lasting. Remembering our founders in 1930, their primary need wasto be seen and to connect with other women artists which can be a source of strength, creative exploration, and hopefulness. We still have much self-discovery and stretching to do. We’re figuring out this “new normal,” and learning that the relationships andstructures we took for granted need constant renewal. There are many exhibition opportunities in different parts of the state allowing artistsmore ways to meet each other and join in the fun.One opportunity for such conversations and friendship will be the upcoming “Intersections” exhibit in Yakima, opening September 10, 2022. The program planners havesecured this beautiful location and planned a series of welcoming events. Check outthe details in the newsletter or on the WPW website. Thanks for bringing your curiosity, your commitment, and creativity to WPW this year. We’re making history right now!Susie WindSeptember 2022HOMEWomen Painters of Washington 2

Exhibition News (continued) Sammamish City Hall Neighborhood ShowHow appropriate with the heat we have had for an exhibition featuring paintings ofLakes!Barbara Jirsa of Sammamish Arts Commission invited Judith Marshall to chair aspecial exhibition focused on Sammamish area lakes. Two years of covid delay didnot deter Judith from putting together a lovely exhibition featuring WPW paintersLisa DeBaets, Yiota Georgas, Magali Lenarczak, Janci Mannington, Judith Marshall,Kristin Morris, Priyanka Parmanand, Carol Ross, and Susan Walker using techniquesfrom watercolor to threads. My favorite paintings of the show were from Kristin Morris, Testing the Water, whichwas inspired by the refreshing feeling of putting your feet in the water during ahike and Judith Marshal’s View of The Lake #2, a painting that shows ‘high bank’shoreline—that is well represented along the Western side of Lake Sammamish—the intricate mark making and palette intrigued me. ERA ExhibitionAljoya, on Mercer Island, will exhibit juried paintings from WPW members fromOctober 10 through February 12, 2023.
