Frog Eat FrogDesigned by David MitchellFrog Eat Frog is a cut-andfold design which I createdin 2005. It depends on theprevious design work ofRobert Neale, who createdthe opening and closingmouth, and of PaulJackson, who added theeyes. My contribution wasto realise that one frog can be placed inside the mouth of the other. There is no need to stop at just two frogs. As the picture on page 7shows, Frog Eat Frog Eat Frog is also a possibility. I leave you to reverseengineer the method for yourself. Frog Eat Frog Eat Frog Eat Frog isprobably also possible, although I have not attempted it.The diagrams show you how to make Frog Eat Frog from a single sheetof homogeneous A4 paper, although US letter size paper will workequally well.121. Fold in half from bottom to top, thenunfold.2.Fold the top and bottom edges inwardsto lie along the horizontal centre crease, then unfold.David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog1

343. Fold in half from right to left, thenunfold.4. Fold the right and left edges inwards tolie along the vertical centre crease, thenunfold.565. Fold in half from right to left using thecrease made in step 3.6. Fold The top and bottom right handcorners inwards using the horizontalcreases as a guide.787. Open out the folds made in step 6.8. Push both corners inside out betweenthe other layers using the creases madein step 6.2David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog

9109. This is the result. Crease the edgesfirmly. Follow the instructions in theenlargements to create the first frog.10. Make a cut ( through the front layersonly ) in the way shown here. The cutstarts half way along the sloping edge andheads for the hidden corner ( shown bydotted lines ) . Stop cutting when you arehalfway between the sloping edge andthis hidden corner. You may be able tosee where this corner is if you hold thepaper in front of a bright light source ( asunny window or a lamp ) , otherwise rubover the area with your finger until animpression of the underlying layersappears.111211. Make the two small folds shown here. The creases should be parallel to theedges of the hidden flaps.12. Open out the folds made in step 11.David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog3

131413. Push both flaps inside out betweenthe other layers using the creases madein step 11. Crease firmly.14. Make a cut through the back layers tomatch the cut you made in the front layersin step 10. This cut is easier to makesince you can use the front layers as aguide.151615. Turn over sideways.16. Repeat steps 11 through 13 on thispair of flaps. Don't forget to crease firmlyagain.1717. Swing the back layers of the designinto view without turning the paper over.Be careful not to flatten any of the folds.4David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog

181918. Fold the top and bottom edgesinwards using the existing creases.19. The first frog is finished.202120. Begin making the second frog byfolding the paper in half from right to left.Make sure the folds of the frog's mouthand eyes swing out into their fully openposition again as you do this.21. The dotted line shows the hiddenedges of the inside layers of paper. Beforeyou make this cut check that all the edgesdo in fact lie in the position shown. ( Seestep 10 for how to find the edges of thehidden layers ) . This cut goes roughlyhalfway to the apex of the hidden layers.Once you have made the cut follow theinstructions in the enlargements to createthe second frog.2222. Fold the corners released by the cutinwards so that they end up in thepositions marked by the dotted lines, crease firmly, then unfold.David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog5

232423. Push both flaps inside out betweenthe layers using the creases made in step22. Crease firmly.24. This is the result. Make another tinycut ( through the front layers only ) in theway shown here. This move is a repeat ofstep 10. Continue to form the second frogby repeating steps 11 through 16 as well.252625. The result should look like this.Crease all the edges firmly.26. Using the existing crease, fold theright hand edge of the front layers acrossto the left.272827. Using the existing crease, fold theremaining right hand edge across to theleft behind the other layers of the paper.28. Crease all the edges, including theedges of the internal layers, firmly oncemore, then swing the front and back flapsout at right angles.6David Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog

2929. Grasp a flap in either hand and pullgently apart.3030. The eyes and mouths ofboth frogs can be made toclose and reopen by gentlypushing the two sides of thedesign together then pullingthem apart again. Becareful! It's a Frog Eat Frogworld out there. As the picture below shows, it is also possible to place a third frog insidethe mouth of the second, smaller, to create Frog Eat Frog Eat Frog.Copyright David Mitchell 2016www.origamiheaven.comDavid Mitchell / Frog Eat Frog7
