Healing the Earth, one yard at a time!November/December, 2013Members Support Wild Ones Missionwith Generous Gifts and ContributionsThank you, everyone! Thanks to you, Wild Ones has weathered the Great Recessionand even managed to accomplish a lot during the 34th year of ourexistence. We are delighted to tell you that we have increased ourmembership to nearly 3600 members as of this writing and arelooking forward to hitting the 3800 goal or even more in 2014.This growth and everything else we’ve accomplished this yearcould only have been accomplished because of you and yourgenerous support toward our mission. Thank you, everyone. Yourcontributions towards the Wild Ones efforts in 2013 and throughyour membership for these many years, have moved us anotherstep toward successfully spreading the word about the importanceof native plants to biodiversity and to the well-being of ourEarth. We are committed to being a good steward of all financialresources entrusted to Wild Ones. Many wonderful things have happened this past year. First, theMonarch Committee developed the various elements of theWild for Monarch Program which has been a huge success. Then Monarch Watch helped us increase the value of our Seedsfor Education Grant Program by kicking in additional fundingfor grant recipients registering their Waystations. This summer, using grant monies, we finished the pollinator garden councilring at the WILD Center that has been dedicated to the goodwork of Citizen’s NaturalResources Association ofWisconsin and to LorrieOtto. The circle waschristened at the AnnualMembership Meeting heldagain at the WILD Center. We’re looking forwardto having people gatherhere in comraderie, tomeditate or to converseor for a special event, butto be as one with nature. Our new website is upand getting better everyweek and several of ourchapters have successfullydeveloped their newwebsites as part of thewhole website.Photo by Brendan Walsh, “Wild Columbine”We’ve kicked off the Native Plants Butterfly Garden RecognitionProgram, which is part of the Wild for Monarchs program andwe’ve completed a very successful survey of our members. Alongthe way we welcomed three new chapters, two of which are instates that we have not been in before: Blue Ridge in Virginia,Front Range in Colorado and West Cook in Illinois. We alsoawarded 14 Seeds for Education Grants. Finally, we have beenhonored to receive a bequest from one of our members whorecently passed away. The bequest will allow us to “Spread theWord” about the importance of native plants to biodiversity andthe very existence of this planet Earth. (There will be more onplans for this campaign in the coming year.)So, as of this writing we have 3,572 members in 45 states andWashington DC and in two provinces of Canada. The WILD Center continues to become better known not only asthe national headquarters for Wild Ones: Native Plants, NaturalLandscapes, but also as a public garden, having increased ourvisitors registration by 15% (and we know many visitors do notregister because we see them walking through the gardens daily!).We’ve had visitors from as far away as California on one coastand Massachusetts and Connecticut on the other, and many of theMidwestern states in between. We hosted authors Doug Tallamyand Charlotte Adelman at the Center for this year’s Fox CitiesBook Festival, which was a big help in spreading the word aboutthe demonstration gardens at the WILD Center. And we gratefullyaccepted 659 volunteer hours that included Wild Ones members, local school groups and master gardeners.Every effort has been made to ensure that the donor lists areaccurate and reflect gifts made from October 21, 2012 throughOctober 9, 2013. However, should there be an error or omission, please contact the national office at 877-394-9453 (877-FYIWILD) or via e-mail at execdirector@wildones.org.With your continued support, it is our goal to expand themovement during the upcoming 35th year so more people willunderstand the important role all of us need to play in revitalizingour own yards and our communities’ green spaces with nativeplants and natural landscapes to preserve our nation’s biodiversity.THANK YOU TO ALL WHOSE GIFTS ARE PLANTING THESEEDS FOR NATIVE LANDSCAPING.Continued on next page.

Helping You Help Wild Ones After You’re GoneThe Wild Ones Legacy ProgramWe are pleased that so many of ourWild Ones members have embraced thisconcept. We have 54 Lifetime Members, seventeen Burr Oak Members, and to-date375 known members in our Oak SavannaCircle. Congratulations! And thank you, everyone. To fund its important programs, Wild Onesdepends heavily on private contributionsfrom caring individuals. Donors are discovering the benefits of supporting charitiesthrough their estate plans. Through theWild Ones Legacy Program we will workwith you and your estate-planning professionals to help you help Wild Ones afteryou are gone. These donations (often called planned gifts)can offer many advantages: Reduce estate taxes. Provide a life-income stream. Allow you to make a much larger giftthan you thought possible. Receive a current income-taxdeduction. Reduce or avoid capital gains tax. Support Wild Ones mission and work.If you have not yet included the Wild Onesin your estate plans, the following are someof the most popular methods to accomplishthat. If you have questions or would likemore information, please contact NationalCounsel, Bret Rappaport, at 312-845-5116or b.rappaport@comcast.net, or the WildOnes National Office at 877-394-9453 orexecdirector@for-wild.org.WillsOne of the simplest and most commonways to remember Wild Ones and help uscarry on our mission is to leave a bequestthrough your will. The following is suggestedlanguage to use in wills and a variety ofother estate planning tools – feel free toprint this and take it to your attorney whenyou are discussing your estate plans. When making a gift to the Wild OnesNatural Landscapers, Ltd., use thislanguage:“I give and bequeath the sum of (or percent of my estate) to the WildOnes Natural Landscapers Ltd., to be usedfor its general purposes.”You may also give a particular asset (“myshares of XYZ stock ”) or a portion of theresidue of your estate after other bequestshave been paid (“50 percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate ”).TrustsThere are many different types of trusts thatcan serve a variety of purposes. It would beimpossible to give even a brief explanationof the many types of trusts in this information. The advice of an attorney and qualifiedfinancial planner is necessary to assess yoursituation and decide which trust might bestserve your goals. Please know, however thatit is easy to include a gift to Wild Onesthrough your trust by using the languageset forth above. Also, there are trusts (called Charitable Remainder Trusts) that can provide you or yourloved ones with a life-income stream whilealso providing a gift to support the programsof the Wild Ones. Please check with yourfinancial advisor to determine what is bestfor your situation.Life insuranceLife insurance can be a valuable tool inestate planning. By naming beneficiaries onpolicies, the proceeds can be paid directly tothat person or organization without havingto go through probate. Life insurance alsooffers a wonderful way to make a charitablegift. It is possible to make gifts with “paidup” policies, policies with premiums still due,

policies where you can retain the right to a policy’s cash value, or by assigning the dividends in aparticipating policy. Check with your insuranceagent to see which option would be best for you.Pay on death or transfer on deathaccountsThis estate planning tool can be an effective wayto quickly transfer assets – such as bank accounts– to a beneficiary, because it avoids that assetgoing through the probate process. It also allowsyou to change the beneficiary at any time. When establishing the account, tell your bankingrepresentative that you wish it to be a “Pay onDeath” account. They will ask you for the nameof the person or charitable organization you wishto receive the property upon your death.Gifts of securitiesWhile a gift of securities is not strictly an estateplanning tool, there are significant advantages tothis type of donation that have allowed manydonors to make gifts that will live on after theyare gone.If you have owned stock for at least one yearthat has increased in value, you can donate thatstock to a charitable organization without havingto pay capital-gains tax on the increase. Additionally there is an income-tax charitable deduction equal to the full current market value of thesecurities (up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income). Using appreciated stockto fund a gift annuity offers added tax benefitsto that gift.Note: In order to receive the most favorable taxtreatment, you must donate the securities to theWild Ones – you cannot sell the stock and donatethe proceeds. If you would like more informationon how to make this transfer, please contact theWild Ones National Office.GET WILDSTAY WILDHo w Yo u Can Help Sup p o rt Our Missio nThere are many ways you can help Wild Ones promote environmentally soundlandscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration, and establishment of native plant communities – including financial support orvolunteering your time. You can choose to provide additional support in various ways.Which of these might work for you?Annual SupportAnnual gifts, in addition to membership fees, provide critical ongoing resources tosupport daily operations and enable Wild Ones to carry out its mission throughoutthe year. Acorn Circle members provide dependable income for Wild Ones programsby making their annual gifts through convenient monthly deductions via credit cardor direct debit from a designated financial account. Any amount is greatly appreciated.Burr Oak CircleDonors who make annual gifts of 1,000 or more are honored through this leadership circle program, and are provided with special benefits such as special viewing daysat the Wild Ones headquarters and a 10 percent discount on items at the Wild Store.Oak Savanna CircleMembers of this circle have loyally supported Wild Ones for at least 15 years or more.Employee Matching Gift ProgramMany companies and organizations match employee contributions, greatly increasingthe impact of a charitable gift to Wild Ones. Please contact your human resourcesoffice for further information.Special Gifts and HeritageContact the Wild Ones Executive Director for further information about the WildOnes Legacy Program which includes making gifts of appreciated stock, real property,in-kind gifts, IRA-rollover gifts (option through December 2007 per the Pension Protection Act of 2006), and multi-year commitments. The Legacy Program (see oppositepage) also can include bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts, and other plannedgiving vehicles which provide significant support to Wild Ones while also benefitingthe donors and their families.Retirement plan assetsVolunteerWith the increase in the variety of retirementplan assets that people own, an important aspectof your estate planning should be making surethat the money invested in these accounts goesto the people or organizations you wish to receive them.More than 4,500 people annually volunteer their time and energy for land conservation, community garden plantings, and other chapter and national Wild Ones activities. Please consider becoming a “plants-roots” partner with Wild Ones.Examples of these different retirementplans include IRAs, pension plans, Keogh, and401(K) accounts. If you are contemplating acharitable gift in your estate plans, using assetssuch as those in retirement plans can maximizeyour donation while allowing other propertythat is not subject to some taxes to be passedto your beneficiaries. Consult your financialadvisor to see what is best for your particularestate plan.Lifetime MembersLifetime members have shown a long-term commitment to the Wild Ones missionand its goals.Gift MembershipsOne of the easiest ways to advocate and help others who are not already Wild Onesmembers learn about the benefits of using native plants in their landscaping is to givethem a gift membership. For more information on supporting Wild Ones, contact Donna VanBuecken,Executive Director, Wild Ones, P.O.
