Advanced Cosmetology, New Jersey State Laws, Clinical(9th)(9th)(10th or th)S1 B4S2 B4S1 B1S2 B1S1/2 B2S1/2 B1/2S2 B1/2S1/2 B 1/2S2/ B1/2S1/2 B3/4S1/2 B3/4All courses are semester length courses and the skills will continue to develop throughout the four year program.II.COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe Cosmetology program offered at Burlington County Institute of Technology is geared to fulfilling the licensing requirements of theState of New Jersey. The student, upon completion of the course and graduation from high school, will be qualified to take the StateBoard Examination and become a licensed cosmetologist/hairstylist. Throughout the program emphasis is placed on safety for thepatron and student as well as personal development and workplace readiness skills.In the first and second years, the student is taught the basics of draping, shampooing, manicuring and pedicuring, hair cutting and styling,scalp treatments, permanent waving, facials, makeup, and hair removal.In the third and fourth years, the emphasis of instruction is geared to all phases of hair coloring, chemical hair straightening, and advancednail techniques and barbering.Instruction is presented by lectures, demonstrations, and audiovisual aids of all types, including computer related materials and studyguides, handouts, guest artists and videos produced by and for professionals for cosmetology. Instruction is primarily geared to thehands-on approach. Field trips are also provided to help the student obtain a better understanding of the occupation.

III.Program Outcome:During the senior year the cosmetology students will take the written and practical portion of the NJ State Board of Cosmetology andHairstyling Exam. Upon graduation the student will be a licensed Cosmetology/Hairstylist which includes hairstyling, skin care, andnail care.IV.Course Descriptions:A.Introduction to Cosmetology (9th)This course is designed to introduce the profession and the historical foundations of the field of cosmetology. This course willintroduce the practical and theory application of shampooing, conditioning, scalp and hair care. Various career opportunities that arein the field of cosmetology will be discussed as well as legal and ethical considerations that cosmetology professionals may be facedwith.B.Infection Control (9th)This course is designed to meet the current regulations for health and safety based on state and federal agencies. Thestudents will learn the standard precautions, which are guidelines published by the Centers for Disease Control to deal withbloodborne pathogens. There will be an introduction of personal protective equipment utilized in various areas of cosmetology.C.Hair and Scalp Care (10th)

This is an introduction to properties of the hair and scalp and principles of hair design. Students will be exposed to varioushair removal techniques, haircutting, braiding ,extensions, wigs and hair enhancements.D.Manicuring and Pedicuring (10th)This course will introduce nail structure ,nail disorders and diseases, to properly treat and identify any diseases and disorders.The basic manicuring and pedicuring procedures will be introduced as well as advanced nail techniques.E.Practical Applications I (10th)This course is designed to teach how to use haircutting implements, elevations and lines to create a desired haircut. Thiscourse also teaches students how different elevations affect the outcome of the finished haircut. On a continuous basis, build on theskills that have been previously taught.F.Chemical Texture Services (11th)This course covers the theoretical knowledge and the physical/ chemical actions used for chemical relaxing and permanentwaving. Upon completion students should be able to make a professional choice on products used, processing time, and follow allsafety precautions.G.Hair Coloring and Hair Lightening (11th)This course covers the theoretical knowledge and the physical/ chemical actions used for hair coloring and hair lightening.Upon completion students should be able to make a professional choice on products used, processing time, and follow all safetyprecautions.H.Skin, Facials, and Facial Makeup (11th)This course is designed to teach the structure of the skin, its diseases and disorders, and the application of products used forcleansing, massaging and cosmetic products. Student demonstration of the full facial procedure and an application of cosmetics.

I.Barbering, Shaving, Mustache and Beard Trimming (11th)This course satisfies the required 25 hour course on shaving, beard and mustache trimming according to the New JerseyState Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling required curriculum. It will include the preparation, procedures and safety precautionsfor the shaving curriculum.J.Practical Applications II (11th)This course is designed to introduce basic skills of client interaction and the performance of requested client services.Students will be introduced to various portions of the state board practical exam.K.Advanced Cosmetology, New Jersey State Laws, Clinical (12th)This course is designed to familiarize the student with the body structure, chemistry used in cosmetology and the practicalapplication of electricity. This course prepares the student for seeking employment and working in a salon.
