Proxima Nova THE ST RY OF - Mark Simonson

Proxima NovaTHE ST RY OFroxima nova is a typeface idea I’ve been working on invarious forms since 1981. I originally called it Zanzibar, justbecause I liked the word. It was nothing more than roughProxima Nova Thinsketches back then, but the conceptProxima Nova Thin Italicfor the lowercase was quite similar toProxima Nova Lighthow it eventually turned out. The capscame later. In 1991, I was art directorProxima Nova Light Italicof Business Ethics magazine, where IProxima Nova Regularwas using Gill Sans. I liked it, but wishedProxima Nova Regular Italic“zanzibar” sketch, c. 1981.for something a bit plainer and moreProxima Nova Mediummodern that still had a geometric feel. Such a face did not seemProxima Nova Medium Italicto exist. Starting from my old Zanzibar idea, I began working on aProxima Nova Semiboldnew typeface to fill this void. I came up with the name Visigothic,Proxima Nova Semibold Italicsince it was modeled somewhat on American “gothic” faces. Proxima Nova BoldSome existing faces influenced the look of Visigothic. I wanted thegeneral proportions and stroke contrast of Helvetica or AkzidenzProxima Nova Bold ItalicGrotesk, but with construction and details borrowed variouslyProxima Nova Extraboldfrom Futura, Kabel, the ATF gothics (Copperplate Gothic, NewsProxima Nova Extrabold ItalicGothic, Franklin Gothic, etc.) and the U.S. Federal Highway sigProxima Nova Blacknage typeface. The result was a hybrid; a face combining modern,Proxima Nova Black Italiceven-width proportions with a somewhat geometric appearance. I released it through FontHaus in 1994 as Proxima Sans, a famProxima Nova Condensed Thinily of six fonts—Regular, Medium, and Black with matching italics.I dropped the name Visigothic, first because of its similarity to theProxima Nova Condensed Thin Italicname of another recently released font, Visigoth, and, second, itProxima Nova Condensed Lightwas kind of a bad pun. I chose the name Proxima Sans becauseProxima Nova Condensed Light Italicit was near to other sans serifs inProxima Nova Condensed Regulardesign but also because those letProxima Nova Condensed Regular Italic proxima sans, 1994.ters happened to display some ofProxima Nova Condensed Mediumthe distinctive characteristics of the design. I had plans to doProxima Nova Condensed Medium Italic more weights, small caps, a condensed version, and other ideas.Proxima Nova Condensed SemiboldBut between lackluster sales, becoming a new parent, and takProxima Nova Condensed Semibold Italic ing on a new full-time job, I found I didn’t have the time or energy to continue working on it for a while. By the early 2000s,Proxima Nova Condensed BoldProxima Nova Condensed Bold Italic I started to get requests to expand the Proxima Sans family andProxima Nova Condensed Extrabold Rolling Stone magazine chose it as part of its redesign in 2003.Encouraged by all this, I went back to work on a new Proxima SansProxima Nova Condensed Extrabold Italicfamily even more ambitious than what I had originally planned. Proxima Nova Condensed BlackIn 2005, I re-released it as Proxima Nova, a family of 42 fonts—Proxima Nova Condensed Black Italic seven weights and three widths with matching italics. Built fromthe start with the OpenType format in mind, it featured advancedtypographic features like small caps, different figure styles, fracProxima Nova Extra Condensed Thintions, and alternate characters, enough to take on the most deProxima Nova Extra Condensed Thin Italicmanding typographic applications. Proxima Nova containedProxima Nova Extra Condensed Lightother improvements over the original. I reviewed and refined evProxima Nova Extra Condensed Light Italicery character. I rebuilt the italics from scratch. I redid the hintingProxima Nova Extra Condensed Regularfor better on-screen display. The character set grew from 245 upProxima Nova Extra Condensed Regular Italicto 699 characters (1435 with the latest version). I kept the specialProxima Nova Extra Condensed Mediumcharacters from the original, like the arrows and other dingbats,Proxima Nova Extra Condensed Medium Italic but gave them proper Unicode values, and created proper mathsymbols in the positions they’d previously occupied. I scrappedProxima Nova Extra Condensed SemiboldProxima Nova Extra Condensed Semibold Italic and rebuilt the spacing and kerning. As in Proxima Sans, the italicshave been optically adjusted to eliminate the distortion caused byProxima Nova Extra Condensed Boldsimply slanting the letters—true italics, not simple obliques. It’sProxima Nova Extra Condensed Bold Italicnow been over ten years since I first released Proxima Nova. SinceProxima Nova Extra Condensed Extrabold then, I’ve continued to make improvements and enhancements,Proxima Nova Extra Condensed Extrabold Italic such as additional language support, including Vietnamese, CyrilProxima Nova Extra Condensed Blacklic and Greek, and have added a new weight—Medium—bringingProxima Nova Extra Condensed Black Italic the total number of fonts in the family to 48. —Mark SimonsonProxima Nova Family MARK SIMONSON 20173.014ONMFeaturescas e -s e n s it ive ch ar ac t e r s(x-ray) (X-RAY)T r u e S mal l C a p sTrue Small CapsL in in g & O l d St y l e F i g ur e s1234567890 1234567890 P r o p o r t io n a lan d tabu l ar Fig ur e s12345 1234512345 12345Fr act io n s u p p or t2/3, 1/8, 53/72. 2/3 1/8, 53/72.O r d in al s u p p o r t1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th.A lt e r n at e C h ar ac t e r sGladly Gladly01 01L ig at u r e sff fi ffi fl ffl fb fh fj ffj fkD in g bat s E x t e n d e d l an g uag e s up p o r σд.E x t e n d e d cu r r e n cy s up p o r t ƒ W W W.
