Education Corner:Certification MaintenanceIn an interview for the August 15, 2001 editionof PBS' NewsHour, Charlene Nunley, thenPresident of Montgomery Community College inRockville, Maryland, had this to say aboutcontinuing education in our emerging society:"Perhaps we should put a time limit on yourPh.D degree, so it will only last for five years, and then you have to go back and show that youhave continued your education and grown anddeveloped. But there is something to be said forthat, because all of us are going to have to keepup with the way the world is changing."After you've been certified for four years, youwill receive a friendly email from APICS HQ and DC Metro. This messagewill remind you that your Certification Maintenance Points Log submissiondeadline is approaching. The Certification Maintenance process wasdeveloped to help you keep your professional edge and stay competitivein today's employment market. This program is definitely NOT: A way for APICS to soak us for more money A punishment for not paying our dues on time A recertification policy Forcing us to re-take one single Exam Difficult to achieveAll certification maintenance requires a CPIM or CSCP to do is show 75points of Continuous Learning over the course of five years. To read the rest of the article, click here.To see our list of trainings and more professional education resources, visit our Learning Center.Upcoming Events.Membership Appreciation EventApril 21, 2011Wine Tasting at the WillowPlease Join APICS DC Metro and Sommelier, Kevin Pruett, for a free WineTasting and Pairing Event!Members are invited to bring a guest interested inlearning more about APICS or supply chain.Time: 6:00-8:00pmCost: Bring a guest interested in APICS! Pearl of WisdomAftermarket Serviceas a Profit CenterIt still surprises me that there arecompanies who have not made thetransition to service as a profit center. I findthis even more surprising given the factthat there are so many 3rd Party Service providers, in just about everyindustry, who operate service as a profit center and compete with OEMcost center operations. Ultimately, I believe the transition to a profitcenter depends on a company's philosophy and perspective towardservice. Some companies maintain a philosophy that service should operate ascost center. This philosophy is often driven from the Board down andinstitutionalized through-out the organization. A "service is free"philosophy typically exists with companies who sell highly reliable anddurable products that have a long life-cycle. It is not unusual to see alife-time warranty or 20-30 year warranty in this instance.Click here to read more.Rewritten by permission from Blumberg Advisory Group."Somewhere along the line of development we discover whatwe really are, and then we make our real decision for which weare responsible.
