The Book ofSirach suggests a practical reason for acting with humility:humble people are more likeable than the arrogant. Even God“finds favor” with those who humble themselves. In Luke’sGospel, Jesus provides real-world suggestions for growing inhumility and teaches us never to assume we are better thanothers. His words change our outward behavior and expand ourhearts and minds to care about people we might have dismissedbefore. This practical, almost “folksy” wisdom about humilityhelps us behave better in daily life and makes our lofty goal ofeternal life more accessible. Our reading from Hebrews affirmsthat heaven is indeed approachable. The personal love andsacrifice of Jesus have opened “the city of the living God” to us.Humility prepares us for paradise. J. S. Her father, a well-respected localbusinessman, died when she was eight years old, leaving her mother, a devoutlyreligious woman, to open an embroidery and cloth business to support the family.After spending her adolescence deeply involved in parish activities, Agnes left homein September 1928, for the Loreto Convent in Rathfarnam (Dublin), Ireland, whereshe was admitted as a postulant on October 12 and received the name of Teresa,after her patroness, St. Therese of Lisieux. From the late 1980s through the 1990s,despite increasing health problems, Mother Teresa traveled across the world for theprofession of novices, opening of new houses, and service to the poor and disaster-stricken. Newcommunities were foundedin South Africa, Albania, Cuba, and war-torn Iraq. By 1997, the Sisters numbered nearly 4,000 members, and were established inalmost 600 foundations in 123 countries of the world.Agnes was sent by the Loreto order to India and arrived in Calcutta on 6 January 1929. Upon her arrival, she joined the Loretonovitiate in Darjeeling. She made her final profession as a Loreto nun on 24 May 1937, and hereafter was called Mother Teresa.While living in Calcutta during the 1930s and '40s, she taught in St. Mary's Bengali Medium School.On 10 September 1946, on a train journey from Calcutta to Darjeeling, Mother Teresa received what she termed the "call within acall," which was to give rise to the Missionaries of Charity family of Sisters, Brothers, Fathers, and Co-Workers. The content of thisinspiration is revealed in the aim and mission she would give to her new institute: "to quench the infinite thirst of Jesus on the crossfor love and souls" by "labouring at the salvation and sanctification of the poorest of the poor." On October 7, 1950, the newcongregation of the Missionaries of Charity was officially erected as a religious institute for the Archdiocese of Calcutta. After asummer of traveling to Rome, New York, and Washington, in a weak state of health, Mother Teresa returned to Calcutta in July1997. At 9:30 PM, on 5 September, Mother Teresa died at the Motherhouse. Her body was transferred to St Thomas's Church, nextto the Loreto convent where she had first arrived nearly 69 years earlier. Hundreds of thousands of people from all classes and allreligions, from India and abroad, paid their respects. She received a state funeral on 13 September, her body being taken inprocession - on a gun carriage that had also borne the bodies of Mohandas K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru - through the streets ofCalcutta. Presidents, prime ministers, queens, and special envoys were present on behalf of countries from all over the world.6

The mountain of Sinai carries amessage of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery.September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepareto return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds thesetwo places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in theaccounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room inbalance with the Mount of Olives.Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The formerliturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the footof the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I willgo to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response,“The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners canrecall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things inliturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altartable evokes memories of the high places once reserved forencounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table wherehospitality draws us to share food and drink. —James Field, J. Al principio del mes de septiembredos naciones toman la fiesta de su nacimiento para recordarlabajo el titulo de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en Cuba y deNuestra Señora de Coromoto en Venezuela.La Virgen del Cobre fue descubierta en el siglo XVI por dosindígenas y un niño africano llamados los tres Juanes, cuandoestos fueron al mar en busca de sal. Después de una fuerte tempestad ellos encontraron flotando sobre las olas una pequeñaimagen de María con el Niño Dios en brazos. La imagen flotabasobre una tabla que decía yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad. Milagrosamente la imagen estaba seca.También en el siglo XVI la Virgen se le apareció al caciquede los indígenas Coromoto en Venezuela. Estos resistían laevangelización y ella se apareció sobre las aguas invitándolos albautizo cristiano.
