Coach Kyle’s Cats own a 3-0 record, marking the first time since2012 the team has won its first three contests. The offense’s fast start (143points) is no surprise, as the team scored 160 points in its first three gameslast year. The defense’s performance is a positive change, however. The 2007season marks the last time the Cats allowed just 7 points in its opening threegames.BIG BRUISERS: The hidden reason for the Wildcats’ success thus far is thestrong play of the offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line has pavedthe way for a bruising rushing attack, which is responsible for 812 yards thisseason. The Wildcats’ backs are averaging an impressive 6.8 yards per carry. On the other side of the line, the front seven has attacked opposing offenses. The two teams have combined for just 282 total yards, as the Cats have 24tackles for loss and 6 sacks. The offensive line is likely among the biggest inOhio, as the average Wildcat offensive lineman is 6’3”, 287 pounds.DEPTH IN NUMBERS: The Saint Ignatius defense has showcased its depthso far this season, with 40 different Wildcats recording a tackle. Eight different Cats have had a hand in a sack, too. Saint Ignatius will look to utilize thatdepth by subbing in defensive linemen and linebackers to counteract a fierceShamrock’s rushing attack.RUN AT WILL: After adapting a pass-heavy attack in 2015, the Wildcatshave morphed into a run-first squad in 2016. The Cats have run the ball earlyand often this season, showing off the trait against Valley Forge, rushing theball 43 times for 306 yards. Mark Bobinski ‘18 and Jimmy Andrews ‘17 havesplit the carries this season, with quarterback Patrick Ryan ‘17 proving to bea dangerous threat to scramble and Dean Stowers ‘17 becoming a speedy andevasive third option at running back.NO YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST: Perhaps the biggest strongsuit ofthe defense is its rushing defense. The Wildcats’ front seven has stunted opposing offenses’ rushing attacks this season, limiting Normandy, Mentor, andValley Forge to just 112 yards. The “Linebacker Legion” of Adam Shibley ‘17,James Leyden ‘17, and John Velotta ‘17 moves quickly to the ball, often penetrating the backfield. The Legion will need to have a strong game on Friday,as the Wildcats face a Shamrocks team that averages 321.3 rushing yards pergame on 47 attempts per game.UPDATE ON THE WILD KITTENS: The freshman and JV teams playDetroit Catholic Central on Saturday at Wasmer Field at 12 and 1:30 p.m.,respectively. The Freshman Gold Cats are undefeated at 3-0 and the JV Catshave a 2-1 mark on the year.UP NEXT: The Wildcats will travel to Cuyahoga Falls to play Walsh Jesuit onFriday, September 23 at Conway Memorial Stadium.

Learning about the Shamrocks .Detroit Catholic Central ScheduleLIVING LEGENDS COLLIDE: Detroit Catholic Central and Saint Ignatiushave similar football histories., but have never played before. The Shamrockshave 11 football state championships, even with the Wildcats’ 11 titles in theOHSAA. DCC also has a legendary head coach at the helm, Tom Mach. The41-year veteran has an incredible record of 360-96 (.789). When the Wildcatsand Shamrocks do battle on Tom Mach Field at Fr. Elmer Stadium, two coaching legends with a combined 684 wins and highly respected programs will befacing off.DateSMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL: The Shamrocks are not a team built on finesse.Rather, Detroit Central Catholic is a team reliant on pounding the ball down itsopponent’s throat. The Shamrocks have run the ball 143 times this season, onlypassing 7 times. Mach’s men are efficient at it, too, averaging an impressive 6.74yards per carry for 943 net rushing yards on the season. The approach will likelynot vary from the norm against the Wildcats. Unlike Normandy (triple option)or Valley Forge (Wing-T), the Shamrocks do not rely on a unique offensiveformation. Instead, DCC uses a variety of schemes, from an Ace set to the Iformation to a T-formation.RUNNING BACK COMMITTE: The Shamrocks do not have one runningback far above the rest in carries or yards. Three Shamrocks have over 100 yardsrushing, and seven different Shamrocks have reached the end zone on runningplays. Captain Nicholas Capatina heads the attack with 42 carries for 328 yardsand 4 touchdowns. Fullback Cameron Ryan comes in at a close second with 225yards and 4 touchdowns. Junioe Labar Morgan rounds out the rushing trio with126 yards and 1 touchdown.THE SCRAMBLER: One of the heaviest running teams in the state, the Shamrocks have only passed the ball 7 times this season. But the stats don’t reflectthe skillset of quarterback Austin Brown. The 6’0”, 180 pound sophomore canscramble for crucial yards on a passing down. Brown has fooled defenses manytimes this season, rushing 19 times for 81 yards and 1 touchdown. Brown alsohas enjoyed success through the air, completing 6-of-7 passes for 171 yardsand 4 touchdowns. Brown has received offers from Toledo, Akron, and Miami(OH). The Wildcats will need to keep a keen eye on Brown.DARK KNIGHT: The Shamrocks’ defense has its share of playmakers, particularly at the linebacker spot. Foremost among those is junior linebacker / fullbackIsaac Darkangelo. The 6’1”, 230 pound two-way player has a team-high 27tackles this season.SACK ATTACK: Opposing offenses have not thrived passing the ball this year, thanks in part to senior defensive end Jackson Ross. The 6’3”, 240 pound endhas a team-best 2 sacks, along with 15 tackles.UP NEXT: The Shamrocks will take a quick trip west to play Brother Rice atHurley Field in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan on Saturday, September 24.OpponentTime/Score8/26 vs. Sterling Heights Stevenson W, 42-0Fr. The nose tackle has 4.5tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1.5sacks, and a forced fumble thisseason. The 6’1”, 260 poundlineman will play a particularly important role, as Gibbonswill be expected to attractdouble teams and free upsecond-level tacklers to attackthe Shamrocks’ run-heavy offensive attack.

B., Stadium as the 3-0 and 11-time State Champion Saint Ignatius Wildcats face the 3-0and 11-time State Champion Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks in an Ohioversus Michigan high school football headliner that Wildcats Hall of Fame CoachChuck Kyle ‘69 describes as “a playoff caliber game.”Cleveland, Ohio - The kickoff on Tom Mach Field, which is named after theShamrocks’ Hall of Fame Coach, will be 7 PM. Coach Mach has been guidingCatholic Central football for more than four decades, a stretch that has produceda record of 360-96.It is a rarity that two high school coaches with such brilliant resumes matchwits, but that will be the case on Friday night, as Saint Ignatius’ Coach Kylebrings a record of 324-83-1 to Novi, Michigan in what is his 34th season as thehead of his alma mater’s storied football program.Coach Kyle’s record of 11 big-school state championships, including an Ohiobest five in a row (1991-1995), are complemented by three National Championships (1989, 1993 and 1995), a National Runner-Up in 2008 and a staterunner-up in 1996.Saint Ignatius’ first two state titles came in 1988 and 1989, and the last four ofthe 11 were produced in 1999, 2001, 2008 and 2011.Of Catholic Central’s 11 state crowns, the first two arrived in 1938 and 1979,and the last four were achieved in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2009.“They’re undefeated and they have an excellent tradition, and there is something to be said for that,” said Coach Kyle of the Shamrocks. “You can tell thatthere is a certain pride in the way they prepare. In their offseason, they work. They’re strong kids.“They are a physical team,” Coach Kyle continued in reference to a team whoseschool’s mission is “Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge,” the mottoof the Roman Catholic Congregation of St. Basil. “They love to take the ball andrun the ball, control the clock and pound it right down the field,” Coach Kylesaid of the Shamrocks’ offensive philosophy. “And they play hard-nosed defense. Iam sure they would love our offense to stay on the sideline.”Who wouldn’t?Saint Ignatius’ offense, which has allowed the ‘Cats to outscore the oppositionthis season, 45-0, 49-7 and 49-0, features the field generalship and athleticism ofsenior quarterback Patrick Ryan, the 1-2 running punch of senior tailback JimmyAndrews and junior tailback Mark “Bo-Bo” Bobinski, an array of sure-handedand athletic receivers, and arguably the top offensive line in all of Northeast Ohio,if not the entire state.Anchoring that line are 6-foot-7, 320-pound junior left tackle Darian Kinnard, who has caught the eyes of major college recruiters, and senior center, captain andEast Carolina recruit John Spellacy. A three-year starter and a first-team Associated Press All-Ohio selection last fall, Spellacy checks in at 6-1 and 285 pounds. As for the Shamrocks’ T-formation offense, it produced 339 yards rushing inthe season opener - a 42-0 victory over the Titans from Sterling Heights Stevenson in the “Battle in the Big House” at the University of Michigan. This past weekend, Catholic Central overwhelmed St. Michael’s College HighSchool from Toronto, Canada, 49-7.In between those victories, the Shamrocks traveled to Toledo and handedWhitmer a 27-7 loss. Catholic Central had 316 yards of offense that night, an offense that was highlighted by a versatile performance from Shamrocks’ sophomorequarterback Austin Brown. Brown attempted only three passes, but completed allthree for a total of 100 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 47 yards on 11carries.As impressive as the offenses from Saint Ignatius and Catholic Central havebeen, their defensive efforts have been off the charts. The Shamrocks limited Stevenson to 68 yards of total offense, allowedWhitmer just 59 yardsof offense and sent St.Michael’s College HighSchool home with lessthan 20 yards of offense.Saint Ignatius, withits vaunted front sevenoverwhelming the opposition, has similarnumbers despite thefact that the ‘Cat’s toplinemen and linebackershave seen limited timebecause of the deficits onthe scoreboard. Seniordefensive lineman MikeChime and senior linebacker and captain Adam Shibley are among those‘Cats who have been living in the opponent’s backfield. While Saint Ignatius’ offensive line is big, deep and talent-rich, the frontseven defensively is a force, my friends. Just ask the Mentor Cardinals.“They have no problems being in the old T-Formation in some sort of athree-back idea,” Coach Kyle said of Coach Mach’s offense. “It’s like playingBill Gutbrod’s offense, Coach Kyle continued in reference to the late Hall ofFame Head Coach of the St. Joseph Vikings, who produced several powerful running games, including the one led by All-Ohio tailback, Universityof Michigan Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl MVP with the GreenBay Packers, the great Desmond Howard. I get goose bumps just thinkingof the honor I had doing a feature story on Desmond for The Plain Dealerduring his brilliant career at then St. Joseph High School.“They’re a team that is not going to throw it a lot,” said Coach Kyle, while continuing to discuss the Shamrocks’ offense. “But sometimes that’sdeceptive because he (Catholic Central’s Brown) scrambles a lot. If he’s ona roll-out and he has the run, I think he will run first. That’s what we’reseeing on film. He’s a nice runner and looks like he has good speed. He’llscramble, and if somebody breaks off the pattern, he’ll hit it. That requires alot of discipline in our coverage.”Coach Kyle is very impressed with Shamrocks running backs NicholasCapatina, a 5-9, 180-pound senior captain who doubles as a defensiveback, and 6-0, 220-pound junior fullback Cameron Ryan, who also seesdouble duty as a linebacker. Six of Catholic Central’s mainstay
