SA-516/SA-516M2013 SECTION II, PART ASPECIFICATION FOR PRESSURE VESSEL PLATES,CARBON STEEL, FOR MODERATE- AND LOWERTEMPERATURE SERVICESA-516/SA-516M(Identical with ASTM Specification A 516/A 516M-06)1.Scope1.1 This specification covers carbon steel platesintended primarily for service in welded pressure vesselswhere improved notch toughness is important.values from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the specification.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:A 20/A 20M Specification for General Requirements forSteel Plates for Pressure VesselsA 435/A 435M Specification for Straight-Beam UltrasonicExamination of Steel PlatesA 577/A 577M Specification for Ultrasonic Angle-BeamExamination of Steel PlatesA 578/A 578M Specification for Straight-Beam UltrasonicExamination of Plain and Clad Steel Plates for SpecialApplications1.2 Plates under this specification are available in fourgrades having different strength levels as follows:Grade U.S. [SI]55606570[380][415][450][485]Tensile Strength, ksi 550][450–585][485–620]1.3 The maximum thickness of plates is limited onlyby the capacity of the composition to meet the specifiedmechanical property requirements; however, current practice normally limits the maximum thickness of plates furnished under this specification as follows:Grade U.S. [SI]55606570[380][415][450][485]3.General Requirements and OrderingInformation3.1 Plates supplied to this product specification shallconform to Specification A 20/A 20M, which outlines thetesting and retesting methods and procedures, permissiblevariations in dimensions and mass, quality and repair ofdefects, marking, loading, and so forth.Maximum Thickness,in. [mm]12888[305][205][205][205]3.2 Specification A 20/A 20M also establishes the rulesfor ordering information that should be complied with whenpurchasing plates to this specification.1.4 For plates produced from coil and furnished withoutheat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additionalrequirements, including additional testing requirementsand the reporting of additional test results of SpecificationA 20/A 20M apply.3.3 In addition to the basic requirements of this specification, certain supplementary requirements are availablewhere additional control, testing, or examination isrequired to meet end use requirements.1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SIunits are to be regarded separately as standard. Within thetext, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values statedin each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem must be used independently of the other. Combining3.4 The purchaser is referred to the listed supplementary requirements in this specification and to the detailedrequirements in Specification A 20/A 20M.960

2013 SECTION II, PART A3.5 Coils are excluded from qualification to this specification until they are processed into finished plates. Platesproduced from coil means plates that have been cut toindividual lengths from coil. The processor directly controls, or is responsible for, the operations involved in theprocessing of coils into finished plates. Such operationsinclude decoiling, leveling, cutting to length, testing, inspection, conditioning, heat treatment (if applicable),packaging, marking, loading for shipment, and certification.SA-516/SA-516M5.2 Plates over 1.50 in. [40 mm] in thickness shall benormalized.5.3 When notch-toughness tests are required on plates11 2 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness, the plates shall benormalized unless otherwise specified by the purchaser.5.4 If approved by the purchaser, cooling rates fasterthan those obtained by cooling in air are permissible forimprovement of the toughness, provided the plates aresubsequently tempered in the temperature range 1100 to1300 F [595 to 705 C].NOTE 1: For plates produced from coil and furnished without heattreatment or with stress relieving only, three test results are reported foreach qualifying coil. Additional requirements regarding plate producedfrom coil are described in Specification A 20/A 20M.6.Chemical Composition6.1 The steel shall conform to the chemical requirements given in Table 1 unless otherwise modified in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S17, VacuumCarbon-Deoxidized Steel, in Specification A 20/A 20M.3.6 If the requirements of this specification are in conflict with the requirements of Specification A 20/A 20M,the requirements of this specification shall prevail.4.Materials and Manufacture4.1 Steelmaking Practice—The steel shall be killed andshall conform to the fine austenitic grain size requirementof Specification A 20/A 20M.7.Mechanical Properties7.1 Tension Test—The plates, as represented by thetension test specimens, shall conform to the requirementsgiven in Table 2.5.Heat Treatment5.1 Plates 1.50 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness arenormally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The platesmay be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both.8.Keywords8.1 carbon steel; carbon steel plate; pressure containingparts; pressure vessel steels; steel plates for pressure vessels961
