In 1979, I began my career as an audio engineer and was trained torecord and edit spoken word recordings such as training tapes and audio books.I remained a dialog editor using razor blade editing as the only form of audioediting available back then. I used my audio perception (not visual perception, which is how audio editing is executed today) to match voice tone and levels, aswell as create smooth content and flow for these products. While employed at Ambience Recordings, I conducted my first audioforensic examination for the FBI in Detroit (case information available on theaudioforensicexpert.com blog). In 1987, I left Ambience to pursue my career as aforensic expert.I attended the University of Detroit from 1979 to 1985 with my major incommunication studies and a minor in criminal justice (transcript available uponrequest). While at the University, I was a probation officer for the 53 rd Districtcourt in Troy, Michigan under Judge Drury.Since then, I have completed hundreds of successful audio and videoforensic investigations, testified in Local, State and Federal courts across theUnited States and worked on various International cases.I am a member of AES, ACFEI, and IAI. I am a Certified CriminalInvestigator (CCI) and a Certified Forensic Consultant (CFC), as well as amember of the American Board of Recorded Evidence with the AmericanCollege of Forensic Examiners International.I help courts and law enforcement agencies understand the science andtechnology of audio and video forensics. Voice identification is one of my mostsought after services at Primeau Forensics followed by audio and videoauthentication, clarification/enhancement.2

With regard to voice identification, it is scientifically known that we all havedistinctive characteristics to our voice and words as well as how we pronouncethose words. Each of us has a unique nasal cavity, larynx, teeth, tongue, andmouth. These distinct characteristics all come together and create a uniquesounding voice that can be examined and analyzed to determine if the voices inquestion are from the same person. My forensic philosophy is that authentication and clarification ofaudio/video media combines art as well as science. The methods that I userequire attention to detail and scientific principles, complemented by anappreciation for clarity and aesthetics. My techniques are derived from both aformal education and the application of skills gained by working in manyforensics situations.I also look at forensics as an experimental science because there are notwo cases that are the same. As a forensic expert I conduct experiments thatinclude variables and that measure how each outcome pertains to the scientificaspect of the case at hand. My forensic processes that I use to arrive at myopinions are accepted in the scientific community and are structured andmethodological. I always take scrupulous (work product) notes that are a part ofeach case.I have provided audio restoration of informant wire recordings that servedas key evidence in convictions involving two Detroit area judges. In the course ofmy career, I have completed dozens of forensics-focused assignments forattorneys throughout the United States. I have testified in Federal, State andLocal courts, as well as the Judicial Tenure Commission and the Michigan PublicService Commission.3

Last Tuesday, long-suffering fans of the reclusive writer Thomas Pynchonreceived a double gift. Pynchon’s latest book, “Inherent Vice,” a stoned-outdetective story set in early-‘70s L.A., was released by Penguin Press (read theJournal’s review). And to promote it, the publisher put out a cool video trailerfeaturing a narrator whose slow, lazy cadence sounds suspiciously like that ofPynchon’s, as evidenced by a guest appearance on “The Simpsons” and this clipfrom what appears to be a German TV spot. Inquiries by GalleyCat and others asto whether Pynchon is the guy channeling the novel’s main character, beach bumprivate eye Doc Sportello, have been met with “no comment” from Penguin Pressand the video’s producers, Meerkat Media. And, of course, the man himself ismum (Would Pynchon fans expect anything else?).In an effort to solve the mystery, Speakeasy did a little sleuthing andcalled Ed Primeau, a Michigan-based sound engineer and voice identificationexpert. Like handwriting analysis, voice identification is an inexact science, oftenused by law enforcement to rule out a suspect rather than to provide a 100%clear-cut ID. Still, people have unique vocal timbres and deliveries, especiallyPynchon, who sounds like actor John Astin (i.e. Gomez Addams from the old TVshow), mixed with a Midwest corn farmer, with a dollop of aging stoner. So is it possible to rule out the man in the “Inherent Vice” trailer as beingthe same guy in the Simpsons episode and German TV clip? Not at all, according to Primeau. In fact, he says, based on a preliminary analysis thespeech pattern and inflection is “virtually identical” in all three clips. “It’s a veryunique style of delivery,” Primeau says. “It’s very up-and-down. He’ll hit theseaccented spots every few words. You know the TV show “Dragnet,” how JoeFriday talked? It’s the opposite of that.”We should point out Primeau is an unbiased witness, having never readPynchon (“I don’t know this guy but it looks like he has some history as anauthor,” he said). Nevertheless, if he hasn’t been taken by the man’s work,30

Primeau is intrigued by his voice, which he describes as “a tobacco-driven softrasp.”Primeau’s conclusion: “Beyond a reasonable degree of professionalcertainty, I believe these voices were delivered by the same person.” Confrontedwith Primeau’s findings, Tracy Locke, a publicist at Penguin, came clean andadmitted, “It is, in fact, Thomas Pynchon doing the narration.”Copyright 2008 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights ReservedLetter from author of article:Hi Ed,Thanks again for your help with the story. Your critical ear was right; itwas Pynchon. When I confronted the publisher with your findings theyadmitted it, so it was a great scoop for the Journal. The police are aided by the fact Britain, perhaps more than any othercountry in Europe, is saturated with hundreds of thousands of the cameras thatmonitor building lobbies, stores and streets for security, watch for traffic jams andbill motorists who drive into London’s city centre in an attempt to reduce trafficcongestion.Every day, the average Briton is filmed many times — on trains andbuses, in schools, hospitals and department stores, sports fields, streets andshops. The looters and arsonists who have ravaged a half-dozen cities andboroughs are on the same cameras.“It’s incredible, they have cameras everywhere in London,” said EdwardPrimeau, an audio-video forensic expert from Detroit.“It’s a huge advantage to law enforcement.
