EXALTED RULERMESSAGEJune is already upon us andthe weather in St. George isbeautiful. We have managedto make it through the YouthAwards Night, Cinco DeMayo, Mother’s Day and the IronManevent and are well on our way.We awarded over 35,000 in scholarshipsand student of the year benefits to ouryouth last month. This is only madepossible by your generosity and the factthat this entire organization is based uponvolunteerism. Volunteers are the lifebloodof this and every other Elks Lodge in thisnation. The Benevolent and ProtectiveOrder of Elks is based upon volunteerismand their generosity, giving over 40million a year in Elks National Foundation(ENF) grants, grants that go towardbettering our local communities. The St. George Elks Lodge was recentlyapproved for the Gratitude Grant, the basisof the Grant is for 2,000 but because wewere able to reach the Grand ExaltedRulers level of giving to the ENF we wereawarded yet another 500. Then weexceeded that 4.80 by enough to beawarded yet another 500. Then our ENFChairperson, Lil Barnes, did enough extraactivities to exceed the Chairman’sChallenge and earn us yet another 500.So the Gratitude Grant went from 2,000to 3,500 due to your generosity and alittle extra work on the part of our officers. That 3,500 will be given to the UtahFood Bank later this month where theywill be able to purchase over 24,000worth of food to assist over 4,000 families.St. George Elks you Rock!I look forward to seeing you at our FlagDay Ceremony and Father’s Day.Bob Matteson, E.R. (435) 272-6158Motto: Working together to make adifference!VETERANS CORNERWe are in need of volunteers for the IvinsVA Home who are willing to go through theirnew Volunteer Protocol. The process includes atwo-hour orientation class, a TB test which theywill administer at no cost, all Covid shots andboosters, and by the fall, a flu shot. They will alsodo a background check for which you will need toprovide some information. It sounds tedious butwe need to keep in mind the purpose is to protectthe residents of the VA Home who are susceptibleto contagious diseases and illness. To date, threeof us have attended and are awaiting clearance. Please note that only cleared volunteers will beallowed to participate in visits, birthday cakeparties, gardening and cornhole, as well as theAdopt-a-Vet program. We would appreciate yourstepping up to assist in the program.Contact Dick Wilson for the date of the nextOrientation. We expect that there will be one amonth. When you come into the Lodge, please take amoment to look at our Veteran’s Memorial. It hasbeen restored beautifully by Cliff Gallagher andhis son. We send them our deep appreciation fortheir work. Sammy Irvin provided the restorationfunds and we extend our thanks to him for hiscontribution. The Tobler Park project in Santa Clara ismoving through the City Council. They really likethe idea of a Veteran’s Garden for our localveterans and those of the VA Home who will beshuttled over from time to time for planting orviewing. We are looking for ELKS to join us inthe labor that will be needed to make this projecthappen. The land, which must be developed, willbe used for a large vegetable garden. The harvestwill go to the Utah Food Bank. We have alreadydelivered a large quantity of radishes, and othervegetables are close to harvest. Contact me if youcan give a 2-hour block of time to this work.May 14 the Veterans Committee hosted the firstSouthern Utah Gold Star Families Meet and Greetand Luncheon. The families participated in a craftproject, lots of conversation, games for thechildren, and lunch. We were very proud to showoff our Lodge and to be part of this group.Remember to reach out to our Veterans with careand honor.Dick Wilson, Veterans Chair435-773-6974

The Dixie Ladies of ElksMay was a month full of activities and charitable events at our Dixie lodge, beginning with the awards dinner. Our LOE presented 8,000 in scholarships to fourdeserving students. A check was also presented to Cherish Families from the Wineand Cheese Tasting event at the May 10 meeting. Our next event will be the Father’s Day Breakfast (held on Father’s Day of course)in conjunction with a program sponsored by our Lodge. Come on up and enjoy“Ray’s Famous Boiled Omelets”.Our Lodge was so fortunate to be presented with many prestigious awards at StateConvention in Provo. Virginia Hansen was presented with the Lifetime AchievementAward, Maxine Thurston with State Lady Elk of the Year, and Donna MacBean withState Lady Elk Officer of the Year. For those who may have missed meetings in April or May, President Jan haschanged our meeting formats to include a speaker or special project for the lastmeeting of each month. Pat Kwake brought her special talent to show the members inApril. Pat is a very talented knitter, providing knitted or crocheted items to children atChristmas. We all know the hats and scarves she donates to LOE to sell at ourChristmas Boutique. Pat would like to start a knitters or crocheters group at the lodge. She does not want to pursue this with the Lodge Board unless there is enoughinterest. If you would be interested in meeting as a group, please contact Pat at 916778-8249 or agourdgal@yahoo.com for more information.June 28 will be our jewelry/acccessory party. Please clean out your treasures andbring any jewelry or accessories you would like to donate to the sale. In the past wehave had jewelry, handbags, scarves, belts, and shoes. This is just a fun evening thatyou might find that one item you have been dying to own.On a sad note, we lost our long-time member, Mary Mace. There will be no servicesheld, so a donation was made in her name to the Eye Fair, for which she served formany years. Also, Barbara Jorgensen’s son was tragically killed in an accident in Spanish Fork. Our condolences to Barbara and her family.Until next month remember: “Kindness is free. Sprinkle it everywhere”.Lynne Pappas, LOE ReporterWelcome all. Mark your calendars, our annual LOEFood Festival is near. This year we will featureTastes from Coast to Coast.
