This is an offence and if the person responsible is seen, a fine can be imposed. Apartfrom being a public right of way, school children walk along that pavement to go to school and I am surethe teachers would not want their classrooms smelling of dog faeces. More importantly it is a serioushealth risk to children. Would the owner please pick up the mess and not leave it for people to walk in.ALLOTMENTSAn allotment has become available so if any parishioner would like to grow vegetables or fruit, pleasecontact the Parish Clerk – Mrs. Elaine Scott on 731148. The rent for the year is 20. Plus a one off 30.00 refundable deposit. The allotment in question is completely weed free and was manured in theautumn.Page 1

Harvest is a time to celebrate all that we get from the land and so we have a communitymeal to share that celebration. This year it is on Saturday 27th September, 2014 in the Village Hall.Put the date in your diaries and watch out for posters and information nearer the time.We all benefit from a good harvest so let's enjoy the fruits of our labours together.Page 3

Suddenly his world gets very real. LOCAL NEWSJune 2014THE RIDGEWAY LADIESOn Wednesday May 7th, by popular demand, Marie-Noelle Witty returned to Broad Hinton Village Hall togive a talk to the Ridgeway Ladies group entitled ‘How the French Eat – Part 2’.She gave an enthusiastic and knowledgeable account of the markets, picnics and feast days in France andleft us all with a feel for the way the French differ from us in their relationship with food and its place ineveryday life. Some of the French dishes that Marie-Noelle had mentioned were served after the talk withcoffee. Everyone enjoyed and learnt something from the evening. The next meeting of the Ridgeway Ladies will be on Wednesday 3rd September when our guest speaker,Bridget Duff, will be giving a talk entitled ‘Eat Well, Feel Well’. Come and join us.A DATE FOR YOUR DIARIESSaturday 6th September 2014BROAD HINTON & UFFCOTTVILLAGE FȆTE & FUN DAYFurther details to followAnyone for tennis? Now that the weather is better, would you like a game of tennis? There is an informal “tennis club” inBroad Hinton, which raises hundreds of pounds every year for the Village Hall. The court atMarlborough Lodge, on the High Street, is available for use, and there is a 10 annual fee for“membership” of the Club, and after that all you pay is 2 a head each time you use the court. We arenow operating a 25 annual fee for families, covering up to 4 people. All money taken goes to the Hall.If you want to use the court at a specific time, it is best to ring in advance to book the court (731050),and bookings will always have preference over people who just turn up. On the other hand, the courtsits idle most of the time. The annual Broad Hinton Tennis tournament will take place in August, date yet to be decided, and itmight be wise to get some practice in! If you want lessons, there are two local coaches who regularlyteach on the court (we don’t change the coaches, just the pupils!).Sally Cartwright and John HutchingsPage 5

LOCAL NEWSJune 2014RICH DIVERSITY OF ARTThere's a buzz in the countryside this year as 15 new and highly respected artists join the MarlboroughOpen Studios scheme this summer.More than 50 artists are opening their studio doors in June and July, offering an enthralling and richdiversity of art to be discovered in the beautiful setting of east Wiltshire. MOS offers the chance to visit theartists in their working environment, find out what inspires them and perhaps buy some wonderful art at adiscount from gallery prices. The four weekends that cover the Marlborough Open Studios scheme are 28/29 June, 5/6, 12/13 and 19/20July.The website www.marlboroughopenstudios.co.uk is packed with information on all the artists and theirlocations – from Devizes to Hungerford - together with suggested trails to follow that include great places toeat and interesting sights to see on the way. Many shops in Marlborough High Street will also feature artworks from most of the artists and a guide forthis will be in the brochure, which will be distributed far and wide in the scheme’s area from the middle ofMay.There is a fantastic showcase exhibition at the Mount House Gallery in Marlborough from 30 May to 5 Junewhere a sample of work from all the artists taking part can be seen in advance of the Open Studioweekends.MOS is an exciting concept that supports local artists and provides days to treasure.A very big THANK YOU to all the Prospect Hospice box holders in our area.We have collected the grand total of 319.95 this spring which will be much appreciated by theHospice. The money donated through the collection box scheme enables the nursing team at Prospect Hospice todeliver more care for people at the Hospice in Wroughton, in people’s homes, in care homes, and at theGreat Western Hospital, where they have a dedicated nursing team. Last year Prospect’s collection boxesraised more than 90,000 towards the cost of running the Hospice. If you are interested in having a box or have any questions please call me on 731106.Thanks againBridget CooperPage 6

LOCAL NEWSJune 2014View FromI have been thinking a great deal about a particularly sad situation faced by a young Catholic friend of mineabout to profess his final vows as a Monk. He confessed recently that his experience as a Novice hadn’texactly been filled with sunshine. There seemed to be something missing from the place and the people hewould spend the rest of his life with in an enclosed order. The absence of the joy that had been there when hebegan his journey was marked and I wondered if this was a crises of faith – something experienced in oneway or another just before one makes a serious spiritual commitment. The wobbles before Marriage, doubtsbefore Confirmation, the shakes before Ordination. As I listened to him speak, several words jumped out ‘ heaviness’ ‘ irritation’ ‘isolation’ ‘ grumpiness’‘listless ritual’ ‘empty prayer’ ‘ joyless community’. To these were added ‘ apathy’ ( only he didn’t use thisterm but CBA – work it out!) as he described what living in a place ‘like that’ was doing to him and ‘his’vocation and that he really didn’t ‘feel like’ carrying on. Taking a deep breath I said to the Holy Spirit ‘help!’Then I asked him when it was that he had last seen Jesus. The silence was deafening. He clearly thought I’dlost the plot. I told him that of course it wouldn’t be a ghostly apparition complete with a set of nail imprintsand pristine white robes – that Jesus would wear a disguise when he visited. He said ‘and will be inside eachof us too?’ The silence continued. Then he said ‘and maybe I have been expecting others to provide the lightand joy of a life with Jesus and didn’t show it myself’ and there was more silence. He concluded ‘I havemissed seeing him in the ordinary petty details of community life, haven’t I?’ I said nothing. And we prayedtogether as usual.I am glad to say that my friend returned to his daily life with the handful of Monks and Brothers and will beprofessed shortly. I heard from his sister that there is a bounce in his step and a light in his eye and that he isreporting in letters home that some of the others are cracking jokes and smiling more during Recreation time. She wondered if they ALL had begun to see Jesus again in each other.Last year over the Solstice Arts Festival we welcomed over 1000 through the doors of the church and inmany, of all faiths, we saw the Divine spark of Almighty God in everyone who came, and can definitely sayJesus visited us and was with us throughout in the most amazing ways. And we are looking forward to doingit all over again 19th -22nd June. And we pray that all of us volunteering, exhibiting and attending will be onthe look-out for God in disguise- whatever our understanding of God is.Maria ShepherdsonUpper Kennet ChurchesSunday Afternoon Tea ServicesCome and Join us for the Tea Services in May and JuneEverybody welcome to these informal services.Cake and Tea will be provided!18th May at St Nicholas Berwick Bassett, 4pmBlowing Bubbles, Telling Tales, following the Jesus Trail15th June at St James Avebury, 4pmFather’s Day Picnic Tea Service and Treasure HuntPage 17
