MarkitNovember 11th 2014October ETP launch review23 actively managed ETFs launched in October, exceeding any month this yearThis report aggregates newly launched funds in October and highlights the performance of the funds launched inSeptember. 61 funds were launched in October, against 52 in September 40 funds were launched in the Americas, 20 in Europe and one in the APAC region First Trust launched 11 new funds, taking the lead for the month of OctoberOctober New ListingsSeptember FlowsETF launches ramped up with 61 new fundslaunched last month. Canada accounted for themajority of the newly launched funds. This was inlarge part due to nine Canadian focused fundslaunched by First Trust, who added 11 in total.Funds launched in September have struggled to reinin considerable assets. Out of the 52 funds launched,the ETFs only gained 767m in assets since theirinception.Other issuers such as Horizons, PurposeInvestments, Royal Bank of Canada and UBS AGall launched funds with an investment exposure toCanada.Dividend focused ETFs were a popular trend for themonth of October, with seven new funds added thatfocused on high dividend paying equities.While Indexed funds continued to dominate asexpected, 23 funds that are actively managed wereadded last month. This is a trend to watch as theSEC has recently approved a plan for nontransparent actively managed ETFs that could leadto many more actively managed ETF in the nearfuture.The Americas were dethroned as leader from theprevious monthly report. Across all asset classes,the US funds launched in September saw 324m ininflows. The largest winner is ETF Series SolutionsDeep Value ETF with 172.6m in inflows since itsinception.European ETFs launched in September gained themost money from investors compared to the otherregions. In total, the 25 ETFs gained 400m inassets. Lyxor ETF JPX NIKKEI 400 Part A, whichprovides exposure to Japan, saw 205m in inflowssince its launch, the largest out of all ETFs launchedin September.The three ETFs launched out of the APAC regiongained 43m in assets over the last few months.The largest being KODEX China H Leverage (H)with 30.4m of inflows.

Markit ETP monthly overview – October 2014October New Launch StrategiesThis month’s interesting listing is Ark Investmentwhich doubled their line-up with two thematicdriven products which aim to give investorsexposure to disruptive innovations with the ARKInnovation and ARK Genomic Revolution MultiSector ETF. Interestingly, ARK’s Innovationproduct draws on constituents of ARKs twopreviously launched funds as well the GenomicRevolution fund to give investors exposure todisruptive innovations in the Web, Industrial andWeb space.Looking beyond passive sector ETFs, last monthsaw eight strategy focused ETFs launch as theindustry continues to focus on these higher earningniche products. This slew of new launches was ledby the Royal Bank of Canada which launched sixfunds under the “RBC Quant” umbrella. Thesefunds which invest in high quality dividend sharesin the US, Europe and emerging markets haveduplicate listings in US and Canadian Dollars tolimit foreign exchange risks, another hot industrytrend.Not to be outdone, ROBO-STOX, which managedto attract over 100m in its Global Robotics andAutomation launched a European UCIT listing ofthe same product.This month’s new strategy ETFs stilloverwhelmingly tilts towards dividend funds, whichlargely mirrors the current set of strategy ETFproducts. The only non dividend strategy fundlisted this month is the Renaissance InternationalIPO ETF which invests in newly listed sharesglobally, mirroring the Renaissance IPO ETFwhich was launched last year and has so farmanaged to attract just over 30m of assets.
