The firstmonth of the calendar year has been full of activities – portions of both Eastern (on 29th Dec)and Western DFC (on 17th Jan) have been inaugurated, IRCTC’s revamped ticketing websitehas been launched, Freight Business Development portal has been started, Kevadiya Rlystation inaugurated, 5 Kevadiya-bound trains flagged off from different directions andinauguration of another renovated station in Gujarat ( Gandhinagar) is in the pipeline.Kevadiya – a small quaint township in the Narmada basin of Gujarat State is suddenlygrabbing public attention. How many of us would have even heard the name 10 years back?Barely a few. The small human settlement made brief appearances in Newspaper Headlinesduring Saradr Sarovar Dam project movement and then once again quickly receded back intooblivion. Today it is drawing throngs of national and international tourists. Apart from themain attraction of the Sardar Vallabbhai Patel’s gigantic statue, today Kevadiya boasts of atent city, a cactus garden, a Children’s Nutrition Park, River-rafting and Jungle safari andbears tell-tale evidence of what can be achieved when vision is backed up by steely resolve.The new Railway Station at Kevadiya and trains flagged off during its inauguration will helptourist have a quicker access to this newly developed tourist spot of Gujarat. CENTRAL NEWSHistory Created in Gujarat as World’s Tallest Statuenew Kevadiya Railway StationHistory was created in Gujarat on Sunday, 17thJanuary, 2021 as the world’s tallest statue –The Statue of Unity of Iron Man Sardar VallabhbhaiPatel came up on Indian Railways map at Kevadiya,Gujarat. On this occasion, Hon’ble Prime Ministerof India also inaugurated the Dhaboi-ChandodGauge converted BG line, Chandod-Kevadiya newBG line, Pratap Nagar-Kevadiya newly electrifiedsection and new station buildings at DhaboiJn., Chandod and Kevadiya. Hon’ble PrimeMinister of India also flagged off 8 newKevadiya – bound trains from variousdesti nations through video conferencing.With this marvelous milestone, aseamless connectivity by rail has beenprovided to pilgrims, passengers andtourists alike from different parts of thecountry visiting the various holy placesnestled on the banks of holy riverNarmada as well as other places ofinterest in the vicinity of the Statue ofUnity.The path to this achievement wasnot at all easy in view of the challengesposed by COVID pandemic reducingwork force of engineers, extendedmonsoon resulting in loss of workingdays and various hurdles faced in theprocess of land acquisition. It is worthmentioning here that the foundationstone for the construction of Statue ofUnity was laid by Hon’ble Prime Ministeron 31st October, 2013 when he was theChief Minister of Gujarat on the occasionof the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.8 I Indian Railways I FEBRUARY 2021The gigantic statue of Unity standing tall at atowering high of 182 meters warmly opened itsdoors to the public on 31st October, 2018 on theoccasion of the 143rd birth anni v ersary of SardarPatel. This unique idea is a tribute to SardarVallabhbhai Patel – The Iron Man and the Architectof the today’s united India. The inspiring leaderstood tall and integrated the princely states intothe Indian Union laying the foundation of a strongand prosperous India. As an ode to this great figure,

Thewater management through rainwaterharvesting,sewagetreatment plants and LED lightsused in the Station will all play amajor role in running the stationwithout any detrimental effect onthe environment. The projects(the stations and the new lines)are also expected to give a fillipto the developmental activities inthe nearby tribal regions, boostconnectivitytoimportantreligions and ancient pilgrimplaces on the banks of riverNarmada, increase both domesticand international tourism andact as an overall catalyst for socioeconomic development of theregionwhilealsohelpinggenerate new employment andbusiness opportunities. It willnow be easy for tourists to plantheir tours of the region.SALIENT FEATURES OF THE PROJECTllllllllllllllllllllllThe project was sanctioned at a cost of 811 cr.Land acquisition for new line project was completed as late as July2020 and the project has been commissioned only in 5 months.It has total of 7 stations with 3 major (crossing) stations & 4 minor(halt) stations.Out of these 4 are new stations - Moriya, Tilakwada, Garudeshwar &Kevadiya, and 3 are existing stations, namely Dabhoi Jn., Vadaj &Chandod.There are 8 major bridges, 79 minor bridges, 9 Road Over Bridges &31 Road Under Bridges.The sectional speed between Pratapnagar -Dabhoi has been raisedfrom 75 kmph to 110 kmph in a short span of 75 days & Dabhoi –Kevadiya section has been built with 110 kmph. The speed of theentire section from Pratapnagar – Kevadiya will be further enhancedto 130 kmph.The station buildings at Dabhoi Jn., Chandod & Kevadiya have beendesigned aesthetically incorporating local features and modern pass enger amenities. Also, Kevadiya station is India’s first railway stationwith a Green Building Certification since inception of construction.Modern engineering techniques & equipment such as Mobile FlashButt Welding machines, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC), Heavy EarthMoving equipment, Heavy duty Road Cranes & Track Machines weredeployed to quicken the pace of Civil Engineering work.A unique technical solution for design of Minor bridges has beenadopted by using locally available RCC Hume pipes. This has not onlyreduced execution time but has also garnered a savings of approx. 27 cr.Innovative technologies such as Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) &Sight Acceptance Test (SAT) for Electronic Interlocking Signallingsystem through Virtual Mode (during COVID-19 pandemic) have beenused to speed up the Signalling works & to reduce commissioning time.Tower Wagons, Over Head Equipment (OHE) wiring train wereutilized for expedition of Electrification works.FEBRUARY 2021 I Indian Railways I 9

CENTRAL NEWSPM Dedicates Rewari - Madar Section of Western Dedicated FreightCorridor to the Nation India Joins Select Nations in the World with the flag off of Double Stack Container TrainPrime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated tothe nation the 306 km long Rewari-Madarsection of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor(WDFC) 7th January, 2021 through video conference.He also flagged off the Double Stack Long HaulContainer Train on this route. Governors Rajasthanand Haryana, Chief Ministers of Rajasthanand Haryana and Union Ministers Shri PiyushGoyal, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, ShriArjun Ram Meghwal, Shri Kailash Choudhary, ShriRao Inderjit Singh, Shri Ratan Lal Kataria, ShriKrishan Pal Gurjar were present on the occasion.Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation ofIndia (DFCCIL) is constructing the Western DFC(1506 Route km) and Eastern DFC (1875 route kmincluding Sonnagar-Dankuni PPP Section). TheEDFC starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana(Punjab) will pass through the states of Punjab,Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand toterminate at Dankuni in West Bengal. The WesternCorridor connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh toJawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai willtraverse through the states of UP, Haryana,Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.DFCCIL will run freight train at the maximumspeed of 100 km/per hour as against the currentmaximum speed of 75 kmph on Indian Railwaytracks whereas the average speed of freight trainswill also be increased from existing speed of26 kmph on Indian Railways lines to 70 kmph onDedicated Freight Corridors (DFC). The opening ofthis stretch will benefit various industries in14 I Indian Railways I FEBRUARY 2021Rewari-Manesar, Narnaul, Phulera & Kishangarhareas of Rajasthan & Haryana. In addition to this,the container depot of CONCOR at Kathuwaswill also come on the DFC map and get advantagein terms of faster throughput. The ports of Gujaratlike Kandla, Pipavav, Mundhra, Dahej etc willhave an uninterrupted connectivity to the Northernparts of India. With the dedication to the nationof the 351-km Bhaupur- Khurja section, andthe interchange point between the WDFC &EDFC at Dadri, seamless connectivity can beensured.

Shri Yogi Adityanath, Hon’ble ChiefMinister, Uttar Pradesh along with Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’bleMinister of Railways, Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Foodand Public Distribution also graced the occasion.This important section is situated in India’s most populous stateof Uttar Pradesh and is built at a cost of 5,750 crores. This sectionis funded by the World Bank. The New stations in this section areBhaupur, Kanchausi, Achalda, Ekdil, Bhadan, Makhanpur, Tundla,Hathras, Daudkan & Khurja. Some of the important Industrial Areasthat straddle this section are Aligarh, Khurja, Firozabad and Agra.This section will open new vistas of opportunity for the districtspassing through the Khurja-Bhaupur section. The DFC alignmentcovers the districts of Kanpur Dehat, Aurayia, Etawah, Firozabad,Hathras, Aligarh and Bulandshahr.Kanpur Dehat district'sPukhrayan region is known for aluminium utensils production. Theyare sold in local markets as well as in other districts like Jhansi,Hamirpur, Banda, Kanpur, Auraiya, Etawah etc. DFC will provide awider reach for the aluminium industry. Auraiya district is renownedfor milk processing and the production of desi ghee which is anoffshoot of animal husbandry. The district is a major producer of puredesi ghee.The state-of-the-art Operation Control Centre (OCC) at Prayagraj(Allahabad) will act as the command centre for the entire route lengthof 1856 Kms. of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC),controlling and monitoring the system including Train operation andpower supply system.Building ArchitectureThe OCC has a total built-up area of 13,030 square metres andhas been developed on a land parcel of 4.20 acres. It is one of the mostmodern and resilient control buildings of its kind globally for TrainOperations. The building is environment-friendly with a GreenBuilding rating of GRIHA4 equipped with solar power and rain waterharvesting.
