WelcomeWelcome to the 2022 International Symposium on Jesuit Studies, the sixth annual gathering of scholars organized by the Institute forAdvanced Jesuit Studies. Our theme this year is “The Jesuits and theChurch in History.”The Roman Catholic Church is the principal milieu within which theSociety of Jesus has operated over the course of its history. In orderto effectively manage their interactions with the rest of the world, theJesuits first had to establish, clarify, and cultivate their relations withthis wider Catholic environment. The history of the Society includesmoments of success and positive collaboration with the Church; italso contains moments of difficulty, crisis, and even termination, asin the order’s suppression in 1773.At this symposium, more than sixty scholars from around the worldwill explore the many aspects of the Society’s relations to the Church, all within the global contexts in which the Jesuit mission grew andoperated. A full program of the event’s individual panels and plenarysessions follows.
