Attitudes are all in our genesBY TANIS TAYLOR, LONDON, METROATTITUDES to weighty ethical issues such asabortion and the death penalty are partlydetermined by genes, say researchers. It used to be thought that beliefs were whollylearned from parents, friends, teachers and thecultural environment in which a person lives. But scientists changed their minds afterstudying 360 pairs of identical and nonidentical twins. They were asked for their views on 30 issues– and 26 of them appeared to be under someinherited influence.Genes appeared to have the most power inthree broad areas. One included views onabortion, voluntary euthanasia, the deathpenalty and organized religion.Another covered attitudes towards makingracial discrimination illegal, open-doorimmigration policies and ‘getting on well’ withothers. The third area covered beliefs on differentaspects of ‘athleticism’ such as organized sportand exercise.Intellectual pursuits such as reading, doingcrossword puzzles and playing chess involvedthe smallest influence, and four subjects –separate roles for men and women, playingbingo, easy access to birth control and beingassertive – appeared to have no link. The researchers, led by Dr. James Olson fromthe University of Western Ontario, wrote: ‘Aperson with inherited physical abilities, such asgood co-ordination and strength, might be moresuccessful at sports than less athleticallyinclined individuals, resulting in the moreathletic person developing favorable attitudestowards sports.’However, the scientists pointed out that themost powerful influences on twins came fromthe unique individual experiences.Copyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer14

“To every man (person) there comes in hislifetime that special moment when he isfiguratively tapped on the shoulder andoffered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to him and fitted to his talent; what atragedy if that moment finds him unpreparedor unqualified for the work which would behis finest hour.”Winston ChurchillCopyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer37

Leadership is an Attitude“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude,to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, thaneducation, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important thanappearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company achurch a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every dayregarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change theinevitable. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact thatpeople will act in a certain way. The only thing we can do is play on theone string we have and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it iswith you, we are in charge of our ATTITUDES.”Charles SwindollCopyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer38

Attitudes are MagicCopyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer39

Attitudes are MagicFIRST: It is your attitude at thebeginning of a difficult task that, morethan anything else, will bring about itssuccessful outcome.Copyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer40

Attitudes are MagicSECOND: Your attitude toward othersdetermines their attitude toward you. Simplecause and effect. We are all interdependent. So it is with life. We simply get back what weput out. The success we achieve in life willdepend largely on how we relate to others;thus, it could be said that it is our attitudetoward life that determines life’s attitudetoward us.Copyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer41

Attitudes are MagicTHIRD: Worth repeating – Before youcan achieve the kind of life you want, you must think, act, talk, and conductyourself in all your affairs as would theperson you will become. Keep a mentalpicture of that person before you asoften as you can during the day.Copyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer42

Attitudes are MagicFOURTH: Remember that the higheryou go in any organization of value, thebetter the attitudes you will find. Andthat a great attitude is not the result ofsuccess; rather success is the result ofa great attitude.Copyright 2013, Rodney Vandeveer43
