UPS Is No. 1, But for How Long?Mexican Carriers Added to ListUBy Daniel P. BearthSenior Features WriterPS Inc. lost its position as the No. 1 thirdparty logistics company in April. Will it bepassed by FedEx Corp. as the largest for-hirecarrier in North America? Not this year, but it’s a distinct possibilitymoving forward based on data compiled by TransportTopics for the 2017 Top 100 For-Hire Carriers list.FedEx’s purchase of TNT Express and its global packageexpress business in May 2016 has narrowed the gap inrevenue separating the No. 1 and No. 2 carriers to a tinysliver. The difference in revenue is so slight that we could seeUPS and FedEx change places in subsequent years basedon what each company does in terms of acquisitions andinternal growth in response to the shift to e-commerce bybusinesses and consumers. The lineup of top fleets after the two major parcelcarriers remains pretty much the same as a year ago, although a pending merger of Knight Transportation andSwift Transportation — and perhaps other deals in theworks this year — likely will juggle the rankings at the topin 2018.The TT100 list this year, however, is different in anotherimportant way.For the first time, we are using revenue estimates forcompanies that do not disclose that information. As aresult, the TT100 list includes a number of companiesthat previously appeared on our sectors lists based onestimates provided by S.J. Consulting Group and otherindustry sources. Those new companies include: less-than-truckload andtruckload carrier R L Carriers at No. 24, tank truck carrierQuality Distribution Inc. at No. 43, LTL carrier CentralTransport International at No. 44, regional parcel andexpress carrier OnTrac Inc. at No. 56, flatbed carrier TMCTransportation at No. 73, refrigerated carrier TransAmTrucking Inc. at No. 88 and bulk carrier United VisionLogistics at No. 93.The rationale for not listing firms on the TT100 unless wehad verifiable data on the company was to ensure that listwas as accurate as possible. But now, on balance, we thinkit was a disservice to exclude those companies and we arelisting them now, in part, because estimates are availablefrom sources, such as S.J. Consulting Group, that we trustand have proven to be very accurate over time. The decision to use revenue estimates also opened thedoor for another important change in the composition ofthe TT100 and the sectors lists. We are adding for-hirecarriers that operate in Mexico based on revenue estimatesprovided by Armstrong & Associates Inc., a top logisticsresearch firm that has developed in-depth knowledge ofthe market south of the border. The two largest Mexican carriers just missed the cutfor the TT100 list this year, but a total of 45 carriers arerepresented in various sectors, providing a fuller picture oftrucking across all three major markets in North America.A few companies are making their first appearance onthe TT100 list, or are back on the list after an absence. They are: Cardinal Logistics Holdings (No. 36) is a companybased in Concord, N.C., that provides dedicated contractcarriage and flatbed and heavy specialized freight hauling. The Dependable Cos. (No. 86) is an LTL carrier andocean freight forwarder based in Los Angeles. Hirschbach Motor Lines (No. 92) is a fast-growing,Dubuque, Iowa- based refrigerated truckload carrier. Salmon Cos. (No. 94) is a mail hauler based inShreveport, La.Data for most of the companies on the TT100 and thesectors lists come directly from company management orthrough financial reports filed with government agenciesin the United States and Canada.Acknowledgments and SourcesThe 2017 Transport Topics Top 100 is an annual project of Transport Topics with assistance from SJ ConsultingGroup and Armstrong & Associates Inc.Senior Features Writer Daniel P.
