WHAT IS A RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE?The Residential College system at theUniversity of Miami began in 1984under then President Tad Foote.Based on the traditions of Oxford andCambridge universities, the ResidentialCollege combines the personalattention, and family-like atmosphereof a small college with the extensiveresources of a major research university.Our Residential Colleges supportand enhance student learning andengagement through interactionswith live-in faculty and studentaffairs staff, as well as a wide rangeof programming, seminars, lectures,field trips, and recreational activitiesthroughout the academic year. Inaddition to the hundreds of campusevents where residents are activelyengaging with faculty and staff, ourresidential areas host numerous facultyled speaking engagements each year.Residential LifeFoscused on student success, living in aresidential college offers residents theopportunity to engage in a wide varietyof programs and events with particularemphasis on student belongingand cultural exploration, intellectualengagement, community living,campus connections, and personaldevelopment.Gender-Inclusive HousingA gender-inclusive, on-campus housingoption is available for suites in EatonResidential College, Mahoney andPearson Residential Colleges and inUniversity Village apartments. Allresidents living in one of these spacesmust opt-in in order to be placed in thiscommunity.Healthy LivingOn designated floors in Hecht andStanford Residential Colleges, wepromote a healthy lifestyle free ofalcohol, tobacco, and other illegalsubstances. Residents who fail to abideby the lifestyle of the floor are offered anew assignment in order to uphold thespirit of the substance-free community.First Year Experience HousingThe First Year Experience at theUniversity of Miami focuses on makingsure that our residents have access tothe resources they need to be successfulat the University. Through variousprogramming, events, seminars, andfaculty/staff interactions, residentsin their first year will be intellectuallyengaged, have multiple connectionsacross campus, and will finish their firstacademic year with a clearer plan forthe rest of their college career.Continuing Student HousingMany students choose to return toon-campus housing after their first yearbecause of the positive experiencesthey had while living on campus. Wecontinue to foster connections inreturning residents’ years on campus.By providing them with in-area accessto the Toppel Career Center and otherresources, Resident Assistants focus onthe needs of continuing students, andstaff who can help with the variousneeds of sophomores, juniors, orseniors. Our goal is to prepare them notonly as students, but as professionalsentering the workforce.

LIVE-IN HOUSINGSTAFFArea Director &Assistant Area DirectorArea Directors are the primaryadministrators of each ResidentialCollege or area and strive to maintainan environment that promotesacademic, emotional, and socialsuccess. This is accomplished throughcoordinating educational programmingin each area, collaborating withlive-in faculty regarding academicinitiatives, responding to resident issuesor concerns, and serving as a crisismanager and a judicial officer.In collaboration with the University’scustodial and maintenance staff,Area Directors also provide excellentcustomer service and follow-up tomaintain a living environment that issafe, clean, and comfortable. You willfind that the Area Director staff at theUniversity of Miami are great campusresources who provide intentionalsupport and individual care.Resident AssistantsResident Assistants are your resourcefor campus, and for your transitioninto the next stage of your educationand adulthood. Want to pursue a newinterest? Having a facility problem? Oreven just a little home sick? “RAs” arethe ultimate, versatile students that canprovide you with the help you needwith day-to-day college life. RAs areyour go-to person for any problems youmight encounter and are there to makesure that you have a good experienceliving on campus.First Year FellowsFirst Year Fellows (FYFs) areupperclassmen student leaders livingin first year communities who buildrelationships with and support studentsas they transition into the collegeexperience. In this role, FYFs developand implement academic and personaldevelopment initiatives and programsfor their residents throughout theyear. FYFs, who report to the Officeof Academic Enhancement, also workclosely with the Resident Assistants(RAs) to build a community thatsupports living and learning.

SAFETY &SECURITYSafety and security is an area that wetake very seriously, so we employ amulti-tiered approach.The University of Miami PoliceDepartment is made up of fully-swornofficers that are responsible for thepatrol and enforcement on campus.ADDITIONALSTAFFResidential Faculty &Faculty FellowsResidential Faculty and Faculty Fellowsare present in the Residential Collegesin order to serve as advocates forstudents. The faculty hold office hoursin the buildings, host dinners in theirapartments, and work with the student staff to provide programming forresidents that focus on current events,social issues, and faculty researchinterests. Faculty are here to serve asa resource, provide student-centeredmentoring, and address any academicconcerns or questions.Office SupervisorsOffice Supervisors are full-time staffmembers that can be found at eachreception desk of your residential area.Ensuring that the front desk is operatingsmoothly, they will be your resource forany questions relating to fines, mail/packages, facility access issues, andfacility operations.Residential College AdvisingThe Senior Advisor for ResidentialCollege Advising assists residentialstudents in our first-year communitiesand handles academic concerns relatedto major and career exploration.They frequently advise students ondeveloping four year plans and connectstudents to campus resources to aid intheir success.Advisors also support at-risk studentsthrough outreach and programmingefforts in the Residential Colleges,working with the Residential Facultyand First Year Fellows. They oversee theFirst Year Fellow peer mentorship roleavailable in Eaton, Hecht, and StanfordResidential Colleges.Inside the residential areas, we utilizecard swipe access so that only residentsand properly credentialed staff haveaccess to the non-public areas of thebuildings.Our reception desks are staffed 24hours a day, 7 days a week with ourResident Assistants and Desk Assistantsfrom 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. everyday, andfrom 10 p.m. - 8 a.m. with our StudentSecurity Staff, who are responsible forsigning in every guest and maintaininga desk presence in the event of anemergency. In addition to regulardesk hours, RAs are on duty for crisisresponse should one occur.Residential LifeNight ManagersThe Residential Life Night Manager is aprofessional staff member who supportsthe RAs and Residential Life Safetyand Security student staff throughoutthe night, especially in crisis response.Together with Safety and Security staff,the Night Manager plans semesterprograms and outreach initiativesdesigned to educate residents about oncampus safety and security.

Mail comes toyour residential area where it is sortedand placed in your mailbox. If you areexpecting a package, look for an emailfrom us and collect your package fromthe reception desk between the hoursof 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., any day of theweek. Please be sure to properly addressany mail or packages to avoid any delayin delivery to your residential area.Any unclaimed package is returned tosender on the fourteenth day. Meal Plan service in the residentialdining halls begins operation the firstday of housing and continues throughthe last day of final examinations,during the fall and spring semester.Dining Dollars provide flexibility andvariety to daily dining. Dining Dollarsare accepted at many of the foodservice locations and can also be usedat resident dining halls if you havedepleted your meals for the week.
