The Academic HuskyNews & Notes from the Academic OfficeCourse RegistrationFreshmen & Sophomore College & CareerAccess SessionsFor the second year in a row, we deemedMarch to be 9th and 10th grade College AccessMonth. This coincided with course registrationfor Fall 2017 which made our discussions aboutplanning for the next few years and beyond to beparticularly relevant.Students reviewed sample transcripts andcompared them to curriculum pathways. Theychecked in on their Naviance accounts andcreated College Board accounts so they can beginlists of schools they may want to attend or knowmore about.Students asked questions ranging from "whatshould I put on a resume since I'm only 15?" to"how many years of math do I need take?" to"what's this whole SCTC thing about?" andwere diligent about following up with counselorsregarding course registration questions, concernsabout future plans, and feedback about theNaviance Curriculum.During the month ofMarch, MCI students ingrades 9-11 registered forcourses for the 2017-2018academic year. Studentswere encouraged toconsider their post secondary optionswhen registering on Powerschool. Whileregistration has come to a close, it is nottoo late to sign up for, or change classesfor next year! Students must schedule ameeting with their academic counselorshould they want to make any changes totheir selections. Students shouldarrive to the MCI Dining Hall by 7:45am. The session will run from 7:45 8:30 am and is anecessary step for allstudents testing. Weask that studentsbring a #2 pencil.

International University AllianceOn Monday April 10th, MCI Internationalstudents will have another unique opportunity tomeet with a representative from the InternationalUniversity Alliance, a company that supportsinternational student transition into collegesthroughout the United States. We feel very happy tohave established this relationship with the IUA, asthey offer many great possibilities for our MCIstudents!“The International University Alliance is a U.S.network of premiere higher education institutionsworking together to build strong internationalrelationships based on shared commitment toexcellence, opportunity and student success”.Our international students will gather in theKinney Conference Room for this event, which willundoubtedly open doors to excellent post secondaryopportunities!Kings EducationWe also feel fortunate to work with KingsEducation, which opens doors for ourinternational students. Paul Joy, a Kingsrepresentative, recently led a Skypepresentation with our International students,offering them a glimpse into what KingsEducation can do to help their college andcareer goals. Their “On Campus Plus Programis a flexible path to graduation from a Top 100US University. It combines full immersion at aUS university with personal support on campusfrom Kings experts. This unique partnershipbetween Kings and universities helpsinternational students go on to success at someof the most elite schools in the US”.We are excited to showcase theseopportunities for our international students asthey consider their post secondary options!Senior AcceptancesThe MCI Class of 2017 has beenreceiving acceptance letters since thefall semester, but in the recent weeks, asteady stream of acceptance letters hasbeen rolling in! So far, 60 of our seniorshave been accepted to college! Seniorshave now been accepted to over 83different colleges, and the letterscontinue to roll in. We are sure thisnumber will only increase as we getcloser to graduation. Seniors have beenaccepted to schools in 23 differentstates, and in 3 different countriesincluding Canada and France! If youhave been accepted to a College orUniversity, bring your acceptance letterto the Academic Office to let yourAcademic Counselor know. Way to go,seniors! We can not wait to see whereelse you are accepted!

Beforegraduation, each senior will meet with theiracademic counselor to discuss their postsecondary plan. This is a great chance forstudents to check in about any last documentsthat may need to be sent to colleges oremployers, get a copy of their transcript,provide a non-MCI email address for futurecontact, and let us know their final decisions forlife after MCI! This will be a mandatory sessionfor all seniors during the month of May. Seniorsmay begin scheduling their exit interviews assoon as possible, as we know May is full of otherend-of-the-year activities!Though seniors will graduate in a couple ofmonths, we still understand that they will needa lot of support beyond commencement. Parent were educated onhow to compare the cost of each school byusing a form called “Comparing Costs andFinancial Aid Awards.” This sheet teachesfamilies how to find the direct costs ofattendance, subtract scholarships andgrants, subtract loans, and create anestimated cost. They also taught parentshow to bridge the gap between cost andaid by finding scholarships, creating apayment plan, or finding the loan that isthe best fit for a family.
