FROM THE PASTORDear Parish Family,This weekend we celebrate Our Lady of Czestochowa’s feast day. For one day, everyoneconcentrates not on the difficulty of spelling her name, but on the beautiful things our BlessedMother’s prayer achieved under this title.Our Lady of Czestochowa is the patroness of Poland, and her icon is believed to have beenpainted by St. Luke on a piece of the table from Mary’s home. Poland suffered greatly in the20th century under Nazism and communism. Thousands of people prayed at the icon to seekher help, and help she did! Our Lady’s intercession resulted in the election of a Polish Pope(John Paul II, the second-longest serving Pope in history next to St. Peter) and the fall of theBerlin Wall in 1989. And her blessing was surely on the Solidarity movement, which strove forhuman dignity and full citizenship, rights, and freedoms for all Polish people.Our Lady’s right hand points toward the Christ Child in her icon, gently deflecting adorationaway from herself and onto Jesus. Her skin is darkened, the sooty remains of the countlesscandles lit in prayer for her intercession. Her face carries two slash marks made by angrysoldiers intent on destroying her image. Our Lady of Czestochowa perseveres to this day,aiding all who turn to her in their hour of need.Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for us!God bless you always, and please pray for me.Love,nFr.
