MSW PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe MSW program, nationally accredited by the Council onSocial Work Education (CSWE), offers a broad professionaleducation based on a systems perspective, which stresseshow individuals live in their environment and how theenvironment affects them.The goal of the MSW Program at Florida State University isto provide quality preparation for advanced practitionerswho will work with diverse client systems and problems. Weemphasize empirically-based practice which focuses onpreventing problems as well as treating them. Our curriculumis flexible so students can shape their own program to meetindividual interests.PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe Master of Social Work degree program is flexible anddesigned to enable students to develop advanced professionalcompetence by providing a curriculum that includes fivesequence areas: social work practice; social policy; humanbehavior and the social environment; social work research;and field education. The curriculum has been developed toemphasize the common elements in all social work practiceareas so that persons receiving the professional degree willbe able to practice in a variety of community agencies andsettings.At the master’s level, students choose one of two advancedconcentrations: Clinical Social Work, which focuses on4 2019-2020theories, research and practice with individuals, families,groups, and communities; or Social Leadership, whichfocuses on the theory, research and practice of social work inorganizations, administrations, policy-making and programevaluation. While the curriculum is structured in this twoconcentration format, students are welcome to take coursesin either concentration or customize their program of studyby applying for our joint pathway and certificate programs.The Tallahassee main campus offers students an opportunityto pursue either the Clinical Concentration, Social LeadershipConcentration or a joint degree program, while the onlineprogram solely offers the Clinical Concentration.Note: Students must complete the MSW within seven years ofbeginning the program.TRADITIONAL MSWCURRICULUMThe College offers full-time and part-time Master of SocialWork programs comprised of sixty-one (61) credit hours ofrequired social work courses and electives. Students bringto their graduate studies a liberal arts perspective and buildon this background during the first year of the programwhich consists of a foundation curriculum that covers theprofessional body of knowledge required by the social workprofession. Courses are divided by sequence areas thatinclude: practice, policy, research, human behavior anda 10 credit hour field internship (approximately 432 field
hours). A variety of elective courses are available and maystrengthen preparation in substantive areas of practice.The second year of the curriculum focuses on advancedcourses in either the Clinical Social Work concentration orSocial Leadership concentration. The curriculum culminateswith a final 12 credit hour internship (approximately 512field hours) along with a 3 credit hour Advanced Seminarcourse that serves to integrate the curriculum with thefield experiences. These internship locations are availablein Tallahassee, around the state of Florida, throughoutthe United States, and in specified international locationswhere field faculty are employed and the AdvancedSeminar is available (either face-to-face or online).Students are highly encouraged to track their program ofstudy by consulting with our MSW Graduate Advisors whocan assist in assuring that students will graduate in theplanned time frame. Faculty mentors are also available todiscuss career and academic decisions. Students shouldfollow the approved curriculum plan outlined in this bulletinfor the concentration selected in order to complete theMSW degree in a timely manner. A listing and description ofgraduate courses is found at the end of this bulletin.ADVANCED STANDINGMSW PROGRAMThe College also offers an Advanced Standing Master ofSocial Work program for applicants who have completed aBSW degree from a program accredited by the Council onSocial Work Education (CSWE). Students in the AdvancedStanding program complete 39 credit hours of requiredsocial work courses and electives, choosing either theClinical Social Work concentration or the Social Leadershipconcentration. At the completion of all course work, thecurriculum concludes with a final internship of 12 credit hours(approximately 512 field hours) and an Advanced IntegrativeSeminar (3 credits).ONLINE/DISTANCELEARNING MSWCURRICULUMOur program offers a flexible way for working students whoreside outside the following counties: Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla,and Jefferson are eligible to complete a graduate degreethrough part-time, online study. These programs are designedfor those who cannot set aside full-time jobs and familyresponsibilities for full-time graduate study, but who are willingto make the commitment to a part-time program. Applicants tothese programs must meet the same standards for admissionas students in the full-time, main campus program and followa structured schedule of coursework, enrolling in two coursesper semester.Florida State University’s College of Social Work became thefirst program to offer an online, CSWE accredited AdvancedStanding MSW program in the fall of 2002. In Spring 2015, theCollege began offering the Traditional MSW Online programas well. For both programs, most of the coursework isasynchronous and uses a web-based format. The TraditionalMSW Online program requires that students participate intwo face-to-face weekend sessions during their studies.PANAMA CITY ADVANCEDSTANDING MSW PROGRAMOur Panama City campus offers a face-to-face AdvancedStanding MSW program for individuals who reside in thefollowing counties: Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson,Calhoun, and Gulf.Please Note: Traditional students in the above listed countieswould need to apply to the online program. Studentseligible for the Advanced Standing MSW in these countiesare required to apply to the Panama City program.MSW BULLETIN 5
MSW PROGRAM CONCENTRATIONSCLINICAL SOCIAL WORKCONCENTRATIONThis concentration prepares students for evidence-basedclinical social work practice with a variety of clients innumerous community settings. Overall, this curriculumemphasizes professional services to clients experiencingstressful situations which impair, or threaten to impair,psychological and social functioning. Clinical social workstudents develop knowledge and skills to enable themto assess, diagnose, and treat persons with emotional,intellectual, and/or behavioral disorders. The curriculumincludes courses and seminars focusing on theory, research,policy, practice knowledge and skills deemed essentialfor clinical work with diverse populations of individuals,families, groups, and communities. Course work focuseson populations at risk such as various religious and culturalgroups, people with disabilities; gays and lesbians; ethnicminorities; those with mental illness; older adults; and thosewho are socially or economically at risk. Field educationprovides hands-on opportunities for the application andintegration of knowledge and skills.The Clinical concentration curriculum enablesstudents to meet the following objectives:1. Assess and/or diagnose and intervene withclient psychosocial problems through individual,couple, family, and/or group modalities. Analyzehow policies impact clinical practice.2. Conduct autonomous empirical evaluations oftheir own practice interventions, incorporatingvalid and reliable measures.3. Critically evaluate, synthesize, and articulate empiricaland conceptual literature related to an applied clinicalcontext.6 2019-2020SOCIAL LEADERSHIPCONCENTRATIONThe goal of the Social Leadership concentration is to preparestudents for advanced, evidence-based social work practicein organizational and community settings to:1.2.3.4.5.Provide leadership in organizations and communitieswithin the public and private sectors.Synthesize and apply theories and methods of policyanalysis to advance social and economic justice.Synthesize and apply theories of change andmethods of program evaluation to assessthe effectiveness of social programs.Develop, provide, and assess effectiveadministrative policies and practices.Critically evaluate, synthesize, and articulate empiricaland conceptual literature related to practice in socialpolicy, program, and administrative contexts.This concentration equips students to work in policy and/or administrative positions in governmental and nongovernmental social agencies serving diverse individuals,groups, and communities. In the first year, our TraditionalMSW Social Leadership students complete foundationcourses and an internship (which requires direct clientcontact). They then begin advanced practice courseslearning about organizational and community systems,advanced policy analysis, program evaluation, and personneladministration. Advanced electives allow students to focustheir studies on a substantive area of interest. In the finalsemester, a policy/administration-advanced internship iscompleted along with an Integrative Seminar. AdvancedStanding MSW Social Leadership students enter theprogram with their BSW and begin with advanced courseslearning about organizational and community systems,advanced policy analysis, program evaluation, and personneladministration.
JOINT PATHWAY PROGRAMSJOINT MSW/JD PATHWAYThis program is for students interested in combining anMSW with a degree in law. Persons graduating with thispathway go into areas such as family law, child advocacy,domestic violence, public policy, and public defense.Students interested in this joint degree must be admittedsimultaneously and independently to both FSU’s College ofSocial Work and College of Law.JOINT MSW/MPA PATHWAYFSU’s Reuben O’D. Askew School of Public Administration& Policy and the College of Social Work offer a joint pathwayprogram leading to the degrees of Master of Social Workand Master of Public Administration. This is one of the fewjoint pathway programs in these fields offered in the U.S.that prepares MSW Social Leadership and MPA studentsfor positions in public, private and nonprofit human serviceorganizations by gaining knowledge in social work and publicadministration. Students must be admitted to both graduateprograms independently.JOINT MSW/MS INCRIMINOLOGY ANDCRIMINAL JUSTICEPATHWAYThe MSW/MS is a joint collaboration between the Collegeof Social Work and the School of Criminology & CriminalJustice. The joint pathway will be for graduate students inboth programs who wish to expand their understanding ofthe connection between these two fields of study and gainexpertise in work with forensic clients. Students must beadmitted to both graduate programs independently.JOINT MSW/MBAPATHWAYThe MSW/MBA is a joint collaboration between the College ofSocial Work and the College of Business. The joint graduatepathway is designed for students in both programs who wishto expand their understanding of the connection betweenthese two fields of study and gain expertise working in socialservices agencies.MSW BULLETIN 7

ADMISSIONS INFORMATIONThe Master’s Program in the College of Social Work seeksto enroll students who are intellectually and emotionallycapable of completing graduate education and practicing atthe advanced level in the profession of social work. Criteriafor admission are established in conformity with standardsderived from the National Association of Social Workers andthe Council on Social Work Education. Assessment of thispotential is made on the basis of academic achievement,social service experience, personal strengths, references, testscores, and indications of the applicant’s commitment to theprofession. Proper completion of admission requirementsensures consideration, but does not guarantee admission.Full application directions can be found on the College of SocialWork website: csw.fsu.edu.All applicants for graduate admission must submit thefollowing information to the FSU Graduate AdmissionsOffice:1.2.One official transcript of ALL undergraduateand graduate work courses. Applicants still in anongoing degree program must submit a secondset of official transcripts with degree posted.GRE scores must be sent directly from the EducationalTesting Service to the Florida State University Officeof Admissions. The FSU code is 5219 (ETS.org). Therequirement of a GRE score may be waived if theapplicant meets certain criteria. Please see MSWAdmissions web page for more information.In addition applicants must:1. Have a baccalaureate degree from a regionallyaccredited college or university.2. Be in good standing at the institution of higherlearning last attended (if applicable).3. Complete the College of Social Work application.4. Statement of Purpose.5. Provide the College of Social Work with three references:a combination of employment and academic references.6. Submit a current resume.7. Present evidence of a grade point average of at least3.0 for all hours earned past their first 60 semesterhours or 90 quarter hours for the baccalaureatedegree OR an earned graduate degree from aregionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparabledegree from an international institution.8. Have a liberal arts foundation, demonstrated by a liberalarts degree or 36 hours of course work in the followingcurriculum areas:Area I: Mathematics (6 hours)Area II: English (6 hours)Area III: History/ Social Sciences (6-12 hours)Area IV: Humanities/ Fine Arts (5-11 hours)Area V: Natural Science (7 hours)All offers of admission are conditional uponthe completion of these prerequisites.9. Evidence of paid social services work or volunteerexperience may strengthen one’s application.10 2019-2020Meeting these requirements only assures consideration of anapplication. There is no single factor, by itself, which will eitherassure or bar admission. Untruthful or misleading responseswill disqualify an application and if detected after enrollment,will automatically void an application and admission tothe program along with being grounds for dismissal.EXCEPTION POLICYApplicants with an upper division GPA below 3.0 must submita “Petition for Exceptional Consideration” for their applicationto be evaluated. The outline for this petition is attached tothe application. A very limited number of exceptions to theminimum GPA requirements can be made for applicants whodemonstrate exceptional qualities or experience. The totalapplication process must be completed before exceptionalconsideration decisions can be made. Those admitted underthe Exception Policy must meet the same performancestandards in the program as a student who meets regularadmission requirements.PROVISIONAL POLICYStudents admitted under provisional status are required toattain a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA with no grade below aB-. Students are required to enroll in a minimum of 6 credithours of social work courses during their first semester andmust meet with an advisor. Upon successful completion ofthe first semester, the student’s provisional status changes tograduate status. Students who do not meet the provision willnot be permitted to continue in the MSW program.ADVANCED STANDING MSWPROGRAM POLICYStudents who have earned a BSW degree from a Councilon Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program maybe eligible for the Advanced Standing MSW program. To beconsidered they must have met all the general requirementslisted above and have satisfactorily completed a minimum of400 hours of educationally based field education in generalistpractice with individuals, families, groups, and communitiesunder appropriate social work supervision. A complete copy ofthe student’s final field evaluation or a recommendation fromtheir BSW field instructor must be submitted.Note: Students who have completed a course at the BSW levelmay not repeat that course at the graduate level and have itbe counted for graduate credit.INTERNATIONAL STUDENT POLICYInternational students who wish to apply for admissionshould contact the International Admissions Officer, Office ofGraduate Admissions, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL32306-2400, for special information and application forms.Only degree-seeking international students are generallyrecommended for admission. Foreign nationals are requiredto receive a satisfactory score of ‘80’ or higher on the Internet
based TOEFL exam.RETURNING STUDENT POLICYStudents in good standing who leave the FSU College ofSocial Work before completing requirements for the MSWmay reapply and will be given consideration for readmission.Readmission can only be considered if the student will be ableto complete all requirements of the MSW degree within sevenyears from the date of the initial enrollment, as required byFlorida State University.NON-DEGREE SEEKINGSTUDENT POLICYThe University allows non-degree-seeking students to enrollin select courses IF they have not previously been deniedadmission into the MSW Program. The primary purpose ofthis status is for continuing education or for students whoare interested in obtaining a clearer understanding of a major.Up to twelve (12) elective credit hours (with a grade of B orbetter) may be accepted toward the degree if a student is lateraccepted into the graduate program.Students on the Tallahassee main campus must apply for nondegree-seeking status via admissions.fsu.edu/nondegreeapp,and notify main campus advisor Jennifer Farinella (jfarinella@fsu.edu). Online non-degree students should contact SydneySmith (scsmith2@fsu.edu).Non-degree seeking students can ONLY register for programapproved courses. Courses taken as a non-degree seekingstudent do not automatically carry graduate credit nor doesthis status constitute acceptance into the graduate program,even if a student excels in course work. Non-degree seekingstudents must still apply for the graduate program and meetthe standard admissions criteria. Performance in non-degreeseeking coursework will be a consideration in the evaluation ofapplications.Non-degree seeking students may be eligible for financial aid;however, College of Social Work policy requires a non-degreeseeking student to have an active MSW application on file withall supplemental documents submitted. Please consult theFSU Graduate Bulletin for further information regarding nondegree seeking student status.APPEALS PROCESSAny student who meets the minimum requirements and isdenied admission to the College of Social Work has the rightto appeal this decision by contacting the Graduate School.Decisions made after this appeal are final. Please refer to theappeals process in the FSU Graduate Bulletin (registrar.fsu.edu/bulletin/grad/).Therefore, students need to be fully aware of sacrificesthat may need to be made both personally and financiallybefore making such a commitment. It is the student’sresponsibility to remain flexible regarding class schedulesand internships. All students, even those attending part-time,must be prepared to make adjustments to their scheduleto successfully complete the degree requirements. MSWadvisors are available for consultation.APPLICATION PROCEDUREAll MSW applicants can apply to the College of Social Workand Graduate Admissions using the Florida State University’sGraduate Online Application admissions.fsu.edu/gradapp/.TRANSFER STUDENTSThe College of Social Work accepts transfer students intothe program. These applicants must meet all the admissionrequirements of the College described previously. A studentwho was enrolled as a degree-seeking student in anotherCouncil on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditedgraduate social work program may transfer up to twentynine (29) credits towards the Traditional MSW Program(61 credit hours) or up to seven (7) credits toward theAdvanced Standing MSW program (39 credit hours). Astudent must receive a grade of B or better in courses takenwithin the past seven years to petition for transfer creditconsideration. Courses will be reviewed on a course-bycourse basis.
