U.S.News and World Report ranks the FSU College of SocialWork as among the top in the country. MSW PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe MSW program, nationally accredited by the Council onSocial Work Education (CSWE), offers a broad professionaleducation based on a systems perspective, which stresseshow individuals live in their environment and how theenvironment affects them.The goal of the MSW Program at Florida State University isto provide quality preparation for advanced practitionerswho will work with diverse client systems and problems. Weemphasize empirically-based practice which focuses onpreventing problems as well as treating them. Our curriculumis flexible so students can shape their own program to meetindividual interests.PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe Master of Social Work degree program is flexible anddesigned to enable students to develop advanced professionalcompetence by providing a curriculum that includes fivesequence areas: social work practice; social policy; humanbehavior and the social environment; social work research;and field education. The curriculum has been developed toemphasize the common elements in all social work practiceareas so that persons receiving the professional degree willbe able to practice in a variety of community agencies andsettings.At the master’s level, students choose one of two advancedconcentrations: Clinical Social Work, which focuses on4 2020-2021theories, research and practice with individuals, families,groups, and communities; or Social Leadership, whichfocuses on the theory, research and practice of social work inorganizations, administrations, policy-making and programevaluation. While the curriculum is structured in this twoconcentration format, students are welcome to take coursesin either concentration or customize their program of studyby applying for our joint pathway and certificate programs.The Tallahassee main campus offers students an opportunityto pursue either the Clinical Concentration, Social LeadershipConcentration or a joint degree program, while the onlineprogram solely offers the Clinical Concentration.Note: Students must complete the MSW within seven years ofbeginning the program.TRADITIONAL MSWCURRICULUMThe College offers full-time and part-time Master of SocialWork programs comprised of sixty-one (61) credit hours ofrequired social work courses and electives. Students bringto their graduate studies a liberal arts perspective and buildon this background during the first year of the programwhich consists of a foundation curriculum that covers theprofessional body of knowledge required by the social workprofession. Courses are divided by sequence areas thatinclude: practice, policy, research, human behavior anda 10 credit hour field internship (approximately 432 field
hours). A variety of elective courses are available and maystrengthen preparation in substantive areas of practice.The second year of the curriculum focuses on advancedcourses in either the Clinical Social Work concentration orSocial Leadership concentration. The curriculum culminateswith a final 12 credit hour internship (approximately 512field hours) along with a 3 credit hour Advanced Seminarcourse that serves to integrate the curriculum with thefield experiences. These internship locations are availablein Tallahassee, around the state of Florida, throughoutthe United States, and in specified international locationswhere field faculty are employed and the AdvancedSeminar is available (either face-to-face or online).Students are highly encouraged to track their program ofstudy by consulting with our MSW Graduate Advisors whocan assist in assuring that students will graduate in theplanned time frame. Faculty mentors are also available todiscuss career and academic decisions. Students shouldfollow the approved curriculum plan outlined in this bulletinfor the concentration selected in order to complete theMSW degree in a timely manner. A listing and description ofgraduate courses is found at the end of this bulletin.ADVANCED STANDINGMSW PROGRAMThe College also offers an Advanced Standing Master ofSocial Work program for applicants who have completed aBSW degree from a program accredited by the Council onSocial Work Education (CSWE). Students in the AdvancedStanding program complete 39 credit hours of requiredsocial work courses and electives, choosing either theClinical Social Work concentration or the Social Leadershipconcentration. At the completion of all course work, thecurriculum concludes with a final internship of 12 credit hours(approximately 512 field hours) and an Advanced IntegrativeSeminar (3 credits).ONLINE MSWCURRICULUMOur program offers a flexible way for working students whoreside outside the following counties: Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla,and Jefferson are eligible to complete a graduate degreethrough part-time, online study. These programs are designedfor those who cannot set aside full-time jobs and familyresponsibilities for full-time graduate study, but who are willingto make the commitment to a part-time program. Applicants tothese programs must meet the same standards for admissionas students in the full-time, main campus program and followa structured schedule of coursework, enrolling in two coursesper semester.Standing MSW program in the fall of 2002. In Spring 2015, theCollege began offering the Traditional MSW Online programas well. For both programs, most of the coursework isasynchronous and uses a web-based format. The TraditionalMSW Online program requires that students participate intwo face-to-face weekend sessions during their studies.PANAMA CITY ADVANCEDSTANDING MSW PROGRAMOur Panama City campus offers a face-to-face AdvancedStanding MSW program for individuals who reside in thefollowing counties: Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson,Calhoun, and Gulf.Please Note: Traditional students in the above listed countieswould need to apply to the online program. Studentseligible for the Advanced Standing MSW in these countiesare required to apply to the Panama City program.Florida State University’s College of Social Work became thefirst program to offer an online, CSWE accredited AdvancedMSW BULLETIN 5
MSW PROGRAM CONCENTRATIONSCLINICAL SOCIAL WORKCONCENTRATIONThis concentration prepares students for evidence-basedclinical social work practice with a variety of clients innumerous community settings. Overall, this curriculumemphasizes professional services to clients experiencingstressful situations which impair, or threaten to impair,psychological and social functioning. Clinical social workstudents develop knowledge and skills to enable themto assess, diagnose, and treat persons with emotional,intellectual, and/or behavioral disorders. The curriculumincludes courses and seminars focusing on theory, research,policy, practice knowledge and skills deemed essential forclinical work with diverse populations of individuals, families,groups, and communities. Course work focuses on at risk andvulnerable populations. Field education provides hands-onopportunities for the application and integration of knowledgeand skills.The Clinical concentration curriculum enablesstudents to meet the following objectives:1. Assess and/or diagnose and intervene withclient psychosocial problems through individual,couple, family, and/or group modalities. Analyzehow policies impact clinical practice.2. Conduct autonomous empirical evaluations oftheir own practice interventions, incorporatingvalid and reliable measures.3. Critically evaluate, synthesize, and articulate empiricaland conceptual literature related to an applied clinicalcontext.6 2020-2021SOCIAL LEADERSHIPCONCENTRATIONThe goal of the Social Leadership concentration is to preparestudents for advanced, evidence-based social work practicein organizational and community settings to:1.2.3.4.5.Provide leadership in organizations and communitieswithin the public and private sectors.Synthesize and apply theories and methods of policyanalysis to advance social and economic justice.Synthesize and apply theories of change andmethods of program evaluation to assessthe effectiveness of social programs.Develop, provide, and assess effectiveadministrative policies and practices.Critically evaluate, synthesize, and articulate empiricaland conceptual literature related to practice in socialpolicy, program, and administrative contexts.This concentration equips students to work in policy and/or administrative positions in governmental and nongovernmental social agencies serving diverse individuals,groups, and communities. In the first year, our TraditionalMSW Social Leadership students complete foundationcourses and an internship (which requires direct clientcontact). They then begin advanced practice courseslearning about organizational and community systems,advanced policy analysis, program evaluation, and personneladministration. Advanced electives allow students to focustheir studies on a substantive area of interest. In the finalsemester, a policy/administration-advanced internship iscompleted along with an Integrative Seminar. AdvancedStanding MSW Social Leadership students enter theprogram with their BSW and begin with advanced courseslearning about organizational and community systems,advanced policy analysis, program evaluation, and personneladministration.
JOINT PATHWAY PROGRAMSJOINT MSW/JD PATHWAYThis program is for students interested in combining anMSW with a degree in law. Persons graduating with thispathway go into areas such as family law, child advocacy,domestic violence, public policy, and public defense.Students interested in this joint degree must be admittedsimultaneously and independently to both FSU’s College ofSocial Work and College of Law.JOINT MSW/MPA PATHWAYFSU’s Reuben O’D. Askew School of Public Administration& Policy and the College of Social Work offer a joint pathwayprogram leading to the degrees of Master of Social Workand Master of Public Administration. This is one of the fewjoint pathway programs in these fields offered in the U.S.that prepares MSW Social Leadership and MPA studentsfor positions in public, private and nonprofit human serviceorganizations by gaining knowledge in social work and publicadministration. Students must be admitted to both graduateprograms independently.JOINT MSW/MS INCRIMINOLOGY ANDCRIMINAL JUSTICEPATHWAYThe MSW/MS is a joint collaboration between the Collegeof Social Work and the School of Criminology & CriminalJustice. The joint pathway will be for graduate students inboth programs who wish to expand their understanding ofthe connection between these two fields of study and gainexpertise in work with forensic clients. Students must beadmitted to both graduate programs independently.JOINT MSW/MBAPATHWAYThe MSW/MBA is a joint collaboration between the College ofSocial Work and the College of Business. The joint graduatepathway is designed for students in both programs who wishto expand their understanding of the connection betweenthese two fields of study and gain expertise working in socialservices agencies.MSW BULLETIN 7
