Spiritual Care Updatewith Fran Mancl, Volunteer ColumnistPastoral CareYears ago, in the middle of the night, I was awakened by mymom. She frantically repeated, “Fran, something’s wrongwith dad, I can’t wake him up!” We went to his bedside. Hisunexpected death at 52 years of life caused heartbreak,emptiness, and hurt beyond belief for my entire family. Yes, days of tears. What is goingto happen to our family farm, our family, and to me? It was the first time in my life Iexperienced the need for what today is referred to as “pastoral care.”In the midst of living, so many of us experience tragedy—death of a loved one, loss of ahome, car accident, permanent disability, terminal illness, separation from loved ones,and so on. Our need for emotional and spiritual support comes to the surface. There is adesperate need in our life for each other, for God, for prayer and reflection, for worship,even the comfort of silence. It’s our need for pastoral care.Christian pastoral care involves extending the love of God and the love of Christ toone another. As someone living within Stonehill Communities, you need pastoral care.There is no shame in asking for it when you do. You canhelp restore hope, faith, and love in the hearts of God’sfollowers, just as Jesus did. “Cast all your anxiety on Himbecause He cares for you.” (1 Peter 4:7).I remain grateful for the pastoral care I received at the timeof my father’s death, and all the times that have followedsince.
