PRINCIPAL’SCORNERIt is time to welcome in winter. As much as Ihave enjoyed the warmth and sunshine, we allknow what is coming. In regards to attendance, remember that thefirst bell rings at 8:17am. We hope that allstudents are ready to enter the building atthat time. As the weather gets colder andthe parking lot gets messy with snow, pleaseleave early enough to make sure that yourstudent can be in class when school starts at8:22 am. When the late bell rings at 8:22 am,we expect all students to be in their class andat their desk. Be aware that there is districtpolicy addressing continual absences andtardiness, and that Wilkerson will followthose procedures. If for some reasonstudents are tardy, they must be signed intothe front office. Please safely park yourvehicle and escort your child into the building. As we prepare for the cold of winter, remember that we go outside for recess aslong as the temperature is over 15 degrees. Please make sure that your children weartheir boots, coats, gloves and hats.Parents have brought in “special, fast food”lunches for their children. While this isspecial for your child, it does create issues(delivery of food that is no longer warm, foodallergies jealousy from other students, etc.).Please try to save special “celebration meals”for outside of school. If you use handicapped parking, please make sure your permit isdisplayed. Those spaces arereserved for people with a handicap parkingplacard or license plate.REMEMBER GYM SHOES!!!Parents, please helpstudents to rememberto wear gym shoes ondays they have gym class. Also, besure to note that boots cannot beworn to gym class.HAVE A MINUTE?Actually, an hour or two wouldbe great, but of course wetake any time you can give. Many volunteers are still needed for variousactivities. Please do not hesitate to getinvolved. Not only can you volunteer in yourchild’s class, we have opportunities in themedia center, after school activities, PTOevents or simply helping children. Let yourchild’s teacher know you are available, or stopby the office and see Mr. Schulte. We willgladly find a place to showcase your talents. All volunteers must fill out a backgroundcheck form each school year. These formscan be found in the office.

STUDENTVERIFICATIONSHEETSAs another new year begins, it is time to makesure we have all the correct phone numbersand emergency contacts on your child’s card. Are the contact’s still available? Do you wantto add more contacts? Has your work placechanged? Would you like to add your emailaddress?Maybe you have a new cell phone number andthe school should have that number. To bestserve your child’s needs we must have thelatest information. A special thank you goesto those parents who let us know of arispublished in our newsletter soparents know what is going on inschool as well as days and halfdays off. I know that many doctors do nothave late afternoon or evening appointmentsand that it is necessary to make morning orearly afternoon appointments. We ask thatyou try to make them on half-days or daysoff. When a child is to leave class for suchan appointment not only do they miss thelesson at that time, but many of them arethinking about the time to leave and are notconcentrating on the lesson they are to beworking on. Working together to educateevery child to their fullest potential is ourmission at Wilkerson.WINTER WEATHER TIMEPlease remember that thestudents do go out for recessif the temperature (wind chill)is 15 or above, and should bedressed properly with warm coats, hats, snowpants, gloves, boots, scarves, etc. Pleasemark names in all items of clothing. Ifsomething is missing, check the lost & found.DECEMBER 19, 2017JANUARY 19, 2018December 20 – January 2* * * * *January 15, 2018Martin Luther King, Jr. DayThe Wilkerson Staffwould like to wisheveryone a Happy andSafe holiday season!!

BUS DELAYSHeavy rains, flooding, fog or snow may causeschool bus delays. All buses are scheduled tobe at appointed stops within several minutesof an established time. Road conditions andtraffic will sometimes cause delay. If thishappens, all students should follow thisprocedure:1. Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early. Ifthe bus driver does not see anyone standingthere they will not stop. Wait at the stop atleast 20 minutes, and then return home.Students should try to have someonetransport them to school. The school bus willtake the child home after school.2. During severe weather, listen to local radioor TV stations for information on busschedules or school closings before going tothe bus stop.Safety is the #1 concern in our school. It istradition that school personnel discuss andpractice with students what is expected ofthem during an emergency. Each year wepractice fire drills, tornado drills and lockdown drills. The procedure for such a drill will begin withan announcement made to the staff. Theteachers will close and lock their doors andclose their blinds. STUDENTS WILL NOTBEPERMITTEDTOLEAVETHECLASSROOM DURING THE DRILL.The custodian will lock and check all outsidedoors and lock the media center doors. Theoffice will clear the phone lines and keepthem open. Once the emergency is over, another announcement will be made and wewill return to our regular daily routine.WE’RE COUNTING ON YOU!! Please encourage responsibility by havingyour child prepare for school the nightbefore by placing homework, books, notes, lunch money, etc. in their backpacks. We ask that you do not interrupt classesin session to speak with a teacher or givesomething to your child. Student materials, lunches, etc., are to be dropped off in theoffice, NOT dropped off at the classroom.Materials will be delivered by our servicesquad or the student will be called down tothe office to pick them up. Parents droppingoff your children in the morning, please sayyour goodbye’s at the door. Homework requests for absent students –if it is only a one-day occurrence, the childcan receive the homework the next day fromthe teacher.SNOW AND ICE!!There is NO snowball throwing on the way toschool, at school, or on the way home fromschool. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TOTHROW SNOWBALLS!!! Serious injuries canoccur when snowballs, often turned to ice, arehurled. Because safety is our major concern, students caught with snowballs will bepromptly and appropriately disciplined. The snow piles that may surroundthe school can be huge and invitingto students.Unfortunately, students do not see the danger of slippinginto the parking lot or cutting themselves onthe icy chunks hidden in the snow because ofthe rough play that tends to happen.Since we will be informing students not tothrow snowballs and to stay off the piles ofsnow around the building, we hope you willdiscuss these rules with your child to helpinsure their safety.
