Out of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may beFor my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstanceI have not winced nor cried aloud.Under the bludgeonings of chanceMy head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tearsLooms but the Horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the yearsFinds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate,I am the captain of my soul.—William Ernest Henley, “Invictus”Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. ForewordJust over ten years ago I was in a very tight spot. I had to takean all-day written exam in the neuroscience graduate programI was in. No one I knew had passed that exam, and those whohad failed were basically kicked off the program. It seemed clearto me there was a conspiracy to force me off the program, due toa series of previous events.Studying the vast amount of information was not going wellfor me—I was very frustrated and losing hope. I could not sleepwell. I was in this state of mind when, one night about 2:00 a.m., Iwas flipping through TV channels and came across Dr. Leaf beinginterviewed on a talk show. What caught my attention was the eloquence with which she was able to explain how the brain works inpractical terms. I was a neuroscience student and already a medicaldoctor, and what she said made sense to me. When I found outfrom her website she had developed a process that had helped manythousands of students around the world excel in their studies, hopestarted to fill my heart. I dared to ask—Could I possibly pass theimpassable? As I began to use the Switch On Your Brain 5-StepLearning Process and its tool, the Metacog, from what I could gleanfrom her website and her book (which I later ordered from SouthAfrica), I knew the answer to my question was a resounding yes!17Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. ForewordAfter passing the exam by using her methods, and leaving thatprogram with a master’s in neuroscience, I have collaborated withDr. Leaf ever since.Dr. Leaf has written some great books over the years; however,I must confess, this is my favorite for many reasons. First, it wasthe material in this book that saved my academic career. Second, Ihave taught students from high school to graduate school using theprinciples in this book and have seen their academic and emotionallives change. Third, the principles in this book have helped my ownfamily. And finally, this is my favorite Caroline Leaf book because ofhighly emotional reasons that go way back to 1976, when I was abouttwelve years old. That was the year of the Soweto school riots inSouth Africa, an event that shocked the world. I looked with horrorat pictures of children carrying their dead and injured friends fromthe line of fire. Years later Dr. Caroline Leaf worked for twenty-plusyears in the townships, including Soweto, and dramatically changedhundreds of schools and hundreds of thousands of students throughthe principles, processes, and techniques explained in this book.In this book, Dr. Leaf lays out a roadmap to success in ourschools and colleges, the workplace, and our personal lives. I suggest you read the book in the order she has laid out, because eachprinciple and process builds on the previous one. There is no quickfix or shortcut. I encourage you, dear reader, to stay the course—Ibelieve the journey will be well worth it, not just for you but forsubsequent generations as well. There are profound changes taking place in classrooms, workplaces, and businesses around the world. Information is increasingat an exponential rate; however, the management of informationhas not kept pace. Information overload is not just negatively affecting our effectiveness but out mental health as well. I believethis book offers a timely solution to the problem.Peter Amua-Quarshie, MD, MPH, MS,assistant professor of basic medical sciences18Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. PrologueEveryone seems to be talking about mindfulness and taking thetime to invest in yourself. But how do you really make yourmind work for you? How do you use your mind to shape your life? How do you “invest” in yourself, creating a lifestyle that promotesboth brain and body health? How do you go beyond awareness of,calming down, and acknowledging feelings, thoughts, and bodilysensations in the present moment to making sustainable, longlasting changes? You are the “captain of your soul,” after all!It is easy to say you want to take care of yourself, but how doyou take care of the mind, which takes care of everything else? The answer is not some pill, diet fad, magic number, Instagramaccount with over a million followers, or some quick-fix memoryprogram. We all have significant resources at our fingertips. Ourminds are incredibly powerful—we can use our thoughts to improve our overall intellect, cognitive performance, and mental andphysical well-being. Harnessing these natural resources will giveyou power over your present, depth and context to your past, andanticipation for the future. How you understand and use your mind is predictive of howsuccessful you will be. We all think, feel, and choose in unique ways;19Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. Used by permission.

Prologuewe all define our own meaningful success. This book is all abouthelping you get to that place where you succeed in all these keyareas and make that switch to a life that is well-lived and filled withmeaningful success. This book is about mental self-care. It takesyou beyond mindfulness into a lifestyle of cognitive transformationthat is both sustainable and organic—suited to your Perfect You.1Mental self-care is integrally interwoven into a life of meaning, which naturally evolves into success in school, work, and every otherarea of your life. It is the key to finding your vocation: what gets youout of bed in the morning, and every morning to come. You canonly be you, and who you are is brilliant, exciting, and inspiring.Indeed, many years of research and many thousands of peoplelater, I am still taken aback by the power of our minds to learn effectivelychange circumstancesincrease creativityimprove memory and its functionalityincrease emotional control, allowing emotions and stress towork for you and not against you experience intellectual satisfactionWhether you are at school and just want to learn how to learn, whether you are in corporate life and need to improve your memoryand performance, whether you are a stay-at-home or working parent juggling professional and personal responsibilities, whether youfeel your mind and memory are not functioning as they should—you need this book because you are a thinking, learning being. You are always thinking and learning, every moment of every day.The questions we need to ask, then, are: What should I think andlearn? How should I think and learn? Are you thinking and learning to succeed? In this book, I will provide you with three practical, scientificmental self-care tools to help you develop successful thinking and20Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. Prologuelearning habits and achieve sustainable, long-lasting change in yourlife. I have researched, developed, and presented these three toolsover thirty years to hundreds of thousands of people around theworld and have been amazed at the results: The Mindset Guide—a practical guide that will give you insight into the power of how mindsets can change your brainand develop cognitive resilience, which is essential to success. The Gift Profile—a tool to find your customized thinking—the unique way you process information to understand howyou think. Understanding how you think will activate thepower of mindsets, turning them from being “nice to knowabout” into real, driving forces of change in your life. Stoptalking and start doing. The Switch On Your Brain 5-Step Learning Process—a technique to build memory and learn successfully, based on howthe mind processes information through the brain. The brainis designed to grow constantly, and the power of mindsetscan really only energize sustainable, successful change whenwe think in our customized ways and build useful memory.Mindsets contain power; customized thinking activates thispower; the five-step process builds this power into long-term sustainable change. So, these powerful tools can help you improveyour memory, learning, cognitive and intellectual performance, work performance, physical performance, relationships, and emotional health. You will shift your life from survival mode to success mode!21Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018. AcknowledgmentsWhen I wrote the first draft of this book and gave it to myteam, waxing on excitedly about how “Microtubules andtubulin as neurobiological quantum computers explain how, in myGeodesic Information Processing Model (the theory and researchI developed thirty years ago), memory is essentially seen as partof the cognitive process, where the new descriptive systems arereconceptualized or redesigned,” they politely looked at each otherand then me, and said, “No one except you and your academiccolleagues are going to read that.” And this was six weeks beforethe manuscript due date. What happened next was an amazing experience and endedup producing my best work—this book, the seventeenth book Ihave written.Dominique, one of my team (and my second daughter, a Pepperdine graduate with experience working in Hollywood), sat medown and said very directly, “Mom, what are you trying to say? Ihave grown up with your scientific thinking and learning methodsand they work; they are revolutionary. You are a mind specialist, but what you have just explained is too complex.” And so began aday-long discussion with many notes being written as Dominique,23Dr. Caroline Leaf, Think, Learn, SucceedBaker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, 2018.
